this book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4theuropeanparallelvirtualmachine and messagepassinginterface Users' Group Meeting, pvm/mpi '97, held in Cracow, Poland in November 1997.;parallelvirtualmachine and messagepassinginterface are the most popular tools for programming in accordance withthe messagepassing paradigm which, at present, is considered to be the best way to develop effective parallel programs.;the book presents 63 carefully selected papers covering the whole range of pvm/mpi issues. the papers are organized in sections on evaluation and performance, extensions and improvements, implementation, tools, algorithms, and applications in science and engineering.

this paper describes many of the new features available in the newly released version 3.4 of pvm (parallelvirtualmachine). Under development for over a year, pvm 3.4 provides a big leap forward in capabilities over pvm 3.3 by adding communication context, message handlers, message box, user defined tracing, and a WIN32 port to the virtualmachine model. this paper will describe how to take advantage of these new features to create sophisticated distributed computing applications. the reader is expected to already have an understanding of parallel and distributed computing and a knowledge of the basic features provided by the pvm software. Other programming topics covered in this paper include improving application performance, adding fault tolerance, building interactive applications, and debugging.

pvm and mpi are often compared. these comparisons usually start withthe unspoken assumption that pvm and mpi represent different solutions to the same problem. In this paper we show that, in fact, the two systems often are solving different problems. In cases where the problems do match but the solutions chosen by pvm and mpi are different, we explain the reasons for the differences. Usually such differences can be traced to explicit differences in the goals of the two systems, their origins, or the relationship between their specifications and their implementations.

Source level debuggers for parallelpvm or mpi programs currently offer good support for debugging multiple processes, however, they still lack adequate mechanisms for debugging messagepassing errors. In this paper, we present a new concept called message breakpoints, which allows to follow the information flow between processes. We also show how these breakpoints can be implemented very efficiently by using invisible message tags and will demonstrate other applications of this technique in the context of distributed event detection.
