the self-diffusion properties of several βSn symmetric tilt grain boundaries are examined using molecular dynamics simulations. the boundary types examined - (101), (201), (401), (310)-Σ5, and (410) - are chosen from those observed in experiment and from arbitrary Miller planes, giving a variety of tilt angles and interface properties. Planar structure factor and diffusivity profiles for each boundary are computed and a grain boundary width, S GB, is measured from these profiles. Larger diffusive widths (S GB) are exhibited by higher excess potential energy grain boundaries. Diffusivities (DGB) in the directions parallel to the interface plane are computed and activation energies are found with the Arrhenius relation. DGB (as SGBDGB normalized by S GB) is shown to agree well with experiment. We also investigate the anisotropic diffusive behavior of the (401) grain boundary and find that the low energy grain boundary exhibits very low activation energy diffusion, due to the development of diffusive channels.

Novel continuity-of-service metrics are applied to perform proof-of-concept simulation-based design of a complex, dynamically interdependent electro-thermal-fluid-spatial-control system subjected to hostile disruptions. the power system models are based on experimentally validated reduced-scale and reduced-complexity testbed models which are representative of U.S. Navy Next Generation Integrated Power Systems. In collaboration with an industry partner, representative thermal and spatial models were incorporated into the layered simulation. this time-domain simulation was used to quantify performance to a specific disruption in terms of a weighted aggregate continuity of service to vital loads. By extension, system vulnerability was quantified using a population of likely threats. Optimization-based early design space exploration was shown to dramatically decrease the notional ship integrated engineering plant vulnerability by improving the performance of a worst-case casualty by a factor of 6. these achievements establish the metrics, methods, and tools to perform quantitative optimization-based early design space exploration for complex, dynamically interdependent systems such as an electric warship.

A method for applying quantized discrete event simulation (DEVS) methods to naturally coupled system models is defined. Pairing the DEVS formalism with the Modified Nodal Analysis technique allows for asynchronous discretization of events, instead of the typical uniform time discretization while automatically enforcing natural conservation laws, unlike signal flow methods that propagate the output of one model to the next without adding physical constraint equations. the mathematical equations for naturally coupled DEVS (NCDEVS) are presented along with example formulations for inductor and capacitor circuit elements. Results from application of the technique to an RLC circuit and to an LC filtered Half-Wave rectifier driving a Permanent Magnet DC Motor (PMDC) are presented and shown to be close to the well known analytical solutions. A significant benefit of the NCDEVS formulation is that it allows bi-directional power flow, as shown in the case of the PMDC motor, therefore the solver doesn't need to be aware if the PMDC motor acts as a motor or as a generator. Moreover using NCDEVS, the motor is modeled by one set of equations, regardless of the operating mode, in contrast to the signal flow method, where the solver needs to have two separate models, one for each case.

the modeling, simulation and experimental validation of the primary bus components of a dc power system testbed are presented herein. this reduced scale and reduced complexity dc testbed is representative of medium voltage dc (MVDC) systems being considered for shipboard next generation integrated power systems (NGIPS). the primary system components include a 4-pole wound-rotor synchronous generator and a propulsion drive based on an induction machine driven by a fully controlled three-phase bridge inverter with an input filter. Four simulation models are presented: a detailed waveform model, a simplified waveform model, a detailed non-linear average value model, and a simplified non-linear average value model. these models have been implemented in the Advanced Continuous simulation Language (ACSL). the simplified waveform and average value model (AVM) versions of the ACSL truth models were converted to Simulink to aid dissemination to other researchers. System stability is addressed via time domain simulation and a generalized immittance based stability analysis. the time-domain models and frequency domain stability analysis provide consistent results validated by the experimental results provided herein.

the paper addresses issues relating to the integration of simulation tools with the objective of providing greater flexibility and efficiency of model development. A specific example of a current research activity aimed at incorporating the functionality of the ESL simulation tool within the Virtual Test Bed (VTB) is described. A brief introduction to ESL and VTB is presented in which the philosophies and strengths of the two packages are described, together with a summary of earlier work resulting in the ability to incorporate externally generated ESL models within VTB simulations. this leads to the specification of an initial set of goals aimed at achieving much greater integration of the two simulation packages - the ultimate objective being to replicate the functionality of ESL within the VTB. A description of underlying principles of the method being developed to achieve these goals is presented. Essentially this involves the inclusion of the set of basic ESL simulation elements with the VTB allowing the construction of ESL style block diagrams. Infrastructure is provided to map the ESL block diagrams into a form that can be executed by the VTB as any other VTB simulation. the current stage of the work is illustrated with a simple example and a set of further goals aimed at extending the ESL functionality available from the VTB is presented. the potential improvements in efficiency and effectiveness of simulation development through such integrated environments are discussed.

this work presents a fast visualization and thermal simulation tool developed as part of the Electric Ship Research and Development Consortium (ESRDC) funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) that is capable of providing quick responses during early stages of ship design. the tool allows for the visualization of thermal and electrical loads, and equipment locations and other variables of interest in the all-electric ship, proceeding to the computation of the resulting whole ship temperature and relative humidity distribution. For that, a previously developed simplified physical model [1-3] - which combines principles of classical thermodynamics and heat transfer, resulting in a system of three-dimensional differential equations which are discretized in space using a three-dimensional cell centered finite volume scheme - is enhanced to include fresh and sea water cooled systems throughout the ship. therefore, the combination of the proposed simplified physical model with the adopted finite volume scheme for the numerical discretization of the differential equations is called a volume element model (VEM). A 3D simulation is performed in order to determine the temperature distribution inside the ship for the baseline Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) architecture, and representative operating conditions are analyzed. VisIt visualization tool [4] is used to plot the results.

Cut-to-size plants are very complex systems, which are used to process several kinds of panels. the acquisition, planning, implementation and operation of these systems impose lots of challenges. To support the process from retail to operation of cut-to-size plants, a new simulation based decision support tool has been developed. this planning tool offers entirely new opportunities for system experts to model, animate, simulate and emulate cut-to-size processes. In this paper, we discuss centrally and hierarchically controlled real time systems and derive a conceptual design to explain the implemented reproduction of the virtual system. We introduce the system architecture for our simulation based decision support tool and examine our approach to model large-scale plant systems. Apart from this, we present our method to process the orders which are generated on the control system and to handle them as discrete event tasks in the virtual system. Finally, based on the findings of the realization and testing of the tool, this paper discusses the opportunities arising from this approach as well as its future potential. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a lethal muscle disorder characterized by mutations in the DMD gene. these mutations primarily disrupt the reading frame, leading to an absence of functional dystrophin protein. Exon-skipping through the use of antisense oligonucleotides has served as a promising therapeutic approach for DMD, and clinical trials in DMD patients are currently underway. Recently, stable and less-toxic antisense oligonucleotides have been developed with a higher efficacy in mouse and dog models of DMD. Despite these advancements, this therapeutic approach is limited by relatively poor systemic delivery of antisense oligonucleotides to muscle, as well as toxicity effects. this review highlights the challenges for antisense oligonucleotide-based therapeutics for DMD, in particular with methods using exon 51-skipping. © 2011 IEEE.
