this paper presents Fuzzy Cognitive Maps as an approach in modelingthe behavior and operation of complex systems;they combine aspects of fuzzy logic, neural networks, semantic networks, expert systems, and nonlinear dynamical systems. they are fuzzy weighted directed graphs with feedback that create models that emulate the behavior of complex decision processes using fuzzy causal relations. First, the description and the methodology that this theory suggests is examined, later some ideas for using this approach in the control process area are discussed. An inspired on particle swarm optimization learning method for this technique is proposed, and then, the implementation of a tool based on Fuzzy Cognitive Maps is described. the application of this theory might contribute to the progress of more intelligent and independent systems. Fuzzy Cognitive Maps have been fruitfully used in decision making and simulation of complex situation and analysis. At the end, a case study about Travel Behavior is analyzed and results are assessed.

Computer modeling of ringsail parachute clusters involves fluid structure interaction (FSI) between the parachute canopy and the air, geometric complexities created by the construction of the parachute from "rings" and "sails" with hundreds of gaps and slits, and the contact between the parachutes. the Team for Advanced Flow simulation and modeling (T star AFSM) has successfully addressed the computational challenges related to the FSI and geometric complexities, and recently started addressing the challenges related to the contact between the parachutes of a cluster. this is being accomplished withthe Stabilized Space-Time FSI technique, which was developed and improved over the years by the T star AFSM and serves as the core numerical technology, and the special techniques developed by the T star AFSM to deal withthe geometric complexities and the contact between parachutes. We present the results obtained withthe FSI computation of parachute clusters and the related dynamical analysis.

For business and resource planning, foresight of application's performance in production is essential. this can apparently be obtained by replicating production environment and scenarios, incurring heavy expenditures. Alternately, time and cost efficient performance modeling and simulation methodology can be used. However complicated real applications and environments deter implementation of this scientific approach. Here we present case study of effectively using model simulation for analyzing a microsite's performance in production. Some of the key challenges, learning's and benefits observed during this exercise are also cited.

With increasing demand for computing and memory, distributed computing systems have attracted a lot of attention. Resource allocation is one of the most important challenges in the distributed systems specially when the clients have Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and the total profit in the system depends on how the system can meet these SLAs. In this paper, an SLA-based resource allocation problem for multi-tier applications in the cloud computing is considered. An upper bound on the total profit is provided and an algorithm based on force-directed search is proposed to solve the problem. the processing, memory requirement, and communication resources are considered as three dimensions in which optimization is performed. simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed heuristic algorithm.
