A primitive gas recognition system which can discriminate limited species of industrial gas was designed and simulated. the 'electronic nose' consists of an array of 8 micro-hotplate based SnO2 thin film gas sensors with different selectivity patterns, signal collecting unit and a signalpatternrecognition and decision part in programmable logic device chip. BP (Back Propagation) neural networks with Multilayer Perceptron structure was designed and implemented on FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), of twenty thousand gate level chip by VHDL language for processingthe input signals from 8 kinds of gas sensors. the network contained eight input units, one hidden layer with 4 neurons and output with 5 regular neurons. the 'electronic nose' system successfully discriminated 5 kinds of industrial gases in computer simulation. A small application has been tested on the APS X208 FPGA test board.

Precise results of matching are required to obtain the precise locations of objects using stereo images. Accordingly, sub-pixel estimation of the corresponding position in area-based matching is often conducted. Several methods to obtain sub-pixel estimation in areabased matching have been proposed. However, there are few reports on accuracy comparison of those methods. therefore, we performed an experiment in order to investigate accuracy of sub-pixel estimation in area-based matching by using 36 diverse images. Our study focused on two popular methods in digital photogrammetry: cross correlation method with fitting a second order surface by using normalized cross correlation coefficients (CMF) and least squares matching (LSM). the experiment results demonstrate that the accuracy of sub-pixel estimation in area-based matching varies considerably withthe properties of the image. Furthermore, the experiment results show that LSM can estimate the corresponding position more accurately than CMF. the estimation error of LSM would be half of that of CMF.

this paper presents a novel hybrid multiresolution statistical and vector quantization based video coding scheme. In the intra mode of operation, a wavelet transform is used to decorrelate the input frame into a number of subbands. the high frequency subbands are coded using a novel statistically based coding algorithm. In the inter mode of operation, overlapped block motion estimation/compensation is employed to exploit interframe redundancy. A wavelet transform is then applied to the displaced frame difference to decorrelate it into a number of subbands. the coefficients in the resulting subbands are coded using an adaptive vector quantization scheme. To evaluate the performance of the proposed codec, the proposed codec and the adaptive subband vector quantization coding scheme (ASVQ), which has been shown outperforms H.263 at all bitrates, were applied to a number of test sequences. Results indicate that the proposed codec outperforms ASVQ subjectively and objectively at all bit rates.

Moments are widely used in patternrecognition, image processing, and computer vision and multi resolution analysis. In this paper, we first point out the discrete Gaussian-Hermite moments, and propose a new method to represent an image compressed using the discrete Gaussian-Hermite moments. the experiment results are reported, which show the good performance of our method.

this paper presents the integrated project TURBINE which is funded under the EU 7th research framework programme. this research is a multi-disciplinary effort on privacy enhancing technology, combining innovative developments in cryptography and fingerprint recognition. the objective of this project is to provide a breakthrough in electronic authentication for various applications in the physical world and on the Internet. On the one hand it will provide secure identity verification thanks to fingerprint recognition. On the other hand it will reliably protect the biometric data through advanced cryptography technology. In concrete terms, it will provide the assurance that i) the data used for the authentication, generated from the fingerprint, cannot be used to restore the original fingerprint sample, ii) the individual will be able to create different "pseudoidentities" for different applications withthe same fingerprint, whilst ensuring that these different identities (and hence the related personal data) cannot be linked to each other, and iii) the individual is enabled to revoke an biometric identifier (pseudo-identity) for a given application in case it should not be used anymore.
