A software application for batch counting of yeast colonies in images of Petri dishes, based on the fast radial transform by Loy and Zelinsky, is introduced in the paper. the motivation to develop our own tool, instead of using a commercial solution, was mainly the requirement to reuse the imaging equipment already existing in the cooperating genetics laboratory, as well as the possibility to adapt the application to the needs of the laboratory. the basic aim is to process image sets prepared beforehand in the darkroom and to automate the process of counting as much as possible. the tool operates either in a fully automatic mode, or provides an interactive editor for correction of the initial machine counting result. the underlying processing flow and algorithms are reviewed in the paper and the performance of the method is evaluated, using a test set of 245 images. the application is available for download or can be requested from the authors of the paper, in both cases free of charge.

In this paper, we present an innovative streaming system for MPEG-4 Scalable to Lossless Coding (SLS) audio. In the proposed system, the scalability feature of SLS audio is fully utilized to create streamable MP4/M4A files and build up an adaptive streaming system. In the MP4/M4A file, a streamable dynamic track is generated to host the lossless audio. In the streaming server, the conventional streaming process is extended to deliver data packets adaptively withthe knowledge of real-time network bandwidth. the proposed system has been utilized by the music streaming website songsofcampus (http://***. com/). Since the first launch in July 2009, this website has received more than 4 million visits and very positive feedback. the system is believed to be the platform paradigm of the next generation system of streaming high quality music through the Internet.

A new image based content retrieval system for logo and trademark identification is presented which can be incorporated in mobile services. In contrast to the traditional logo retrieval system, the main challenges include (a) the image segmentation of the target object from a cluttered background, (b) effective region descriptor invariant under the photometric and geometric transformations. therefore, robust object segmentation is required to extract regions of interest from the cluttered background. then a new distinctive region descriptor using the Zernike moment (ZM) phase information is proposed for information retrieval. the proposed method is compared withthree major existing methods. the experimental results are presented which indicate that the proposed method has the best performance in terms of the precision and recall criterion.

this paper presents a novel and efficient approach to error resilient video coding, targeted at audio visual archiving applications, where video files need to be kept in digital storage systems for extended periods of time. In the face of the inevitable data corruptions occurring silently in the storage media, the proposed method enables graceful degradation while also minimising the total cost of storage. Rather than keeping the video stream as a single continuous file within the storage system, it is proposed to split it intelligently into multiple sub files, with selective replication, based on a significance index defined for the various components of the encoded bit stream, and the characteristics of the storage system itself. the sub files are stored in different tiers of a multi-tier digital storage system with "graded" protection. A sliding scale is defined to vary the mapping of the significance index to the coding parameters. the parameters could be optimised for the application specific circumstances, including the desired quality and the longevity of the content.

Instead of treating all the users jointly as in zero-forcing (ZF) multiuser transmission techniques, the investigated singular value decomposition (SVD) assisted DL multiuser MIMO system takes the individual user's channel characteristics into account. this translates to a choice of modulation constellation and transmitter power and, in our proposed system, to a choice of number of activated user-specific MIMO layers. the performed joint optimization of the number of activated MIMO layers and the number of bits per symbol along withthe appropriate allocation of the transmit power shows that not necessarily all user-specific MIMO layers has to be activated in both frequency selective and frequency non-selective MIMO channels in order to minimize the overall BER under the constraint of a given fixed data throughput.

this work presents a trinocular stereo vision system for real-time applications. the algorithm uses a sparsed census transform and is capable of processing trinocular configurations with baselines of different length. At first, a camera calibration tool for inline or L-shaped three-camera- configurations is introduced. For calculating the desired depth images, an existing census-based stereo matching system for binocular stereo vision is modified and extended to support the new trinocular camera configurations. Because of the extensive usage of Single Instruction, Multiple Data (SIMD) instruction sets and the support of state-of-the-art multi-core CPUs, dense depth maps can be produced at interactive frame rates, i.e. at least with several fps. A method of fusing the results of two stereo matching processes is developed in order to obtain depth maps, which are more dense and which contain less false positive matches. It was our intention to achieve reproducible data about the quality gain of the extension by one additional camera. We could use the Middlebury stereo vision evaluation for the 3-camera configurations and observed a reduction of false matches by up to 40% compared to the original binocular system. With a resolution of 640×480 and 80 disparities, frame rates of 12fps were achieved on state-of-the-art multi-core CPUs.

Artificial neural networks (ANN) is an approach to solving different tasks. In this paper we forecast U.S. stock market movements using two types of artificial neural networks: a network based on the Levenberg-Marquardt learning mechanism and a synergetic network which was described by German scientist Herman Haken. the Levenberg-Marquardt ANN is widely used for forecasting financial markets, while the Haken ANN is mostly known for the tasks of image recognition. In this paper we apply the Haken ANN for the prediction of the stock market movements. Furthermore, we introduce a novation concerning preprocessing of the input data in order to enhance the predicting power of the abovementioned networks. For this purpose we use Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We also suggest using ANNs to reveal the "mean reversion" phenomenon in the stock returns. the results of the forecasting are compared withthe forecasts of the simple auto-regression model and market index dynamics.
