In the world of battery driven devices, semiconduc-tor memories (SRAM) plays an important role. In this work, we have designed a novel hybrid low-power technique for an SRAM cell called BB-SKDG (Body-Biased Sleep Keeper and Drain Gating) for SRAM cells in the 90nm technology node. By incorporating body biasing of three transistors (PMOS) in the pull-up network and varying the SKBD terminal voltages for three transistors (NMOS) in the pull-down network, significant reductions in power consumption during write, read, and hold operations are achieved. Experimental results demonstrate a substantial decrease in average power consumption for write and read operations by 82.1 % and 73.3%, respectively, and a 89.7% reduction in static power for hold operations. the approach shows promise for various applications, including battery- powered wireless sensors, implantable healthcare devices, and embedded computers.

Clock synchronization is an important challenge in the Internet of things (IoT), especially for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). It refers to aligning the timekeeping of multiple devices or systems to a common reference time. It ensures the accuracy and reliability of the collected data, which are often used for critical applications, such as environmental monitoring or security. However, clock synchronization techniques can significantly impact sensor resources, including energy consumption and computing power. In this paper, we present a novel clock synchronization approach for WSNs, especially for low-resource networks. To minimize energy consumption and address the constraint of limited computing resources of nodes, we randomly select a subset of neighbors, in contrast to existing methods which consider all neighbors. Subsequently, each node selects half of the values from the chosen nodes to compute the clock average. Finally, the node adjusts its clock to the computed average. Experimental evaluation results show that the system achieves synchronization after 4 iterations and requires only one additional iteration when 10% of nodes are malicious. the proposed technique reduces the influence of malicious nodes, storage space, computation time, and energy consumption, which is important for IoT applications.

the safety of the All-Electron missile safety system is an important link to ensure the accurate detonation of the fuze. this paper uses Markov theory to analyze and calculate the probability of accidental disarming of the safety lock logic before and after the missile launch, considering the impact of the number of environmental signals and time windows on the safety failure rate. the study compares the safety failure rates under different numbers of environmental excitation signals. the results show that compared to general electromechanical and mechanical safety systems, the All-Electron fuze safety system, which uses three sensors to recognize four environmental signals and then acts on three time windows, with two ecological signals jointly acting on the same time window, has a lower safety failure rate and higher safety. It can effectively improve the missile's safety from separation to detonation.

In this paper, we propose a symbolic framework to analyze and debug communicating distributed models. We implement dedicated symbolic execution techniques for such models and use them to compute interaction scenarios satisfying a particular user coverage objective. these scenarios reveal emergent temporal and data correlations that are part of the system specification. To support the understanding and the analysis of such learned knowledge, our tooling allows for an intuitive annotated scenario visualization using sequence diagrams. As an application, we develop behavioral models for the so-called distributed Trickle algorithm which manages information dissemination in Wireless sensor Networks (WSN). We select relevant scenarios which cover critical communications achieving an up-to-date or outdated state of the network. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and smart sensors are the tools towards the fifth agricultural revolution. Remote sensing is thriving in agriculture, broadening the horizons of cultivators and farming practitioners. However, adopting such a technological endeavour in a raw production process is a challenging task for farmers. Operation and maintenance of such systems require specific ICT knowledge. there is also a wide variety of software and hardware equipment to choose from that can greatly impact business costs and system performance according to the kind of cultivation. Due to the lack of guidance regarding the employment of precision agriculture monitoring systems, this paper proposes a detailed decision model regarding the requirements and considerations of deploying remote sensing capabilities on a cultivation. Agricultural businesses are in need of guidance when it comes to the adoption of technological advancements especially in the case when a carefully planned operation can produce a significant amount of profits.

the MAC protocol ieee 802.15.4 DSME has features for WSNs to support exigent requirements such as high reliability and adaptability to dynamic traffic. this work introduces the concept of a virtual sink, which comprises the sink and its 1-hop neighbors, a.k.a. satellites, as the core of a strategy to alleviate the burden caused by the funneling effect in data collection scenarios. Our strategy enables the coexistence of a centralized scheduling algorithm at the virtual sink and a decentralized scheduling algorithm for the remaining nodes of the network. through a simulative assessment, we compare the performance of the virtual sink-based strategy with the status quo of DSME via a decentralized slot scheduler TPS. Results show an improvement of the network throughput of up to 38% and a reduction of the energy consumption of about 30% at satellites.

this paper addresses the growing interest in deploying deep learning models directly in-sensor. We present "Q-Segment", a quantized real-time segmentation algorithm, and conduct a comprehensive evaluation on a low-power edge vision platform with an in-sensors processor, the Sony IMX500. One of the main goals of the model is to achieve end-to-end image segmentation for vessel-based medical diagnosis. Deployed on the IMX500 platform, Q-Segment achieves ultra-low inference time in-sensor only 0.23 ms and power consumption of only 72mW. We compare the proposed network with state-of-the-art models, both float and quantized, demonstrating that the proposed solution outperforms existing networks on various platforms in computing efficiency, e.g., by a factor of 75x compared to ERFNet. the network employs an encoder-decoder structure with skip connections, and results in a binary accuracy of 97.25 % and an Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUC) of 96.97 % on the CHASE dataset. We also present a comparison of the IMX500 processing core with the Sony Spresense, a low-power multi-core ARM Cortex-M microcontroller, and a single-core ARM Cortex-M4 showing that it can achieve in-sensor processing with end-to-end low latency (17 ms) and power consumption (254mW). this research contributes valuable insights into edge-based image segmentation, laying the foundation for efficient algorithms tailored to low-power environments.

Since the proliferation of fog computing, various distributed architectures have been proposed to extend the cloud to the edge of the network. However, so far there exists no study that compares different fog computing architectures, and produces quantitative results in order to examine the efficiency of each architecture for different use cases. Such a study could provide guidelines for selecting an appropriate distributed architecture for fog computing while taking into account the requirements of the final applications. To bridge this gap in the literature, we create a unified system model which is able to represent the basic architectures commonly used for fog computing, i.e., hierarchical and flat. Furthermore, we design algorithms that can be used for creating fog computing systems that follow these architectures, and we perform various experiments that focus on communication latency and bandwidth utilization. Notably, our results show that for applications that do not have a dependency on the cloud, i.e., no resource-demanding tasks are involved, the hierarchical architecture reduces the communication latency by 13% compared to the flat. However, for applications that also include resource-demanding tasks, the flat architecture reduces the communication latency by 16% compared to the hierarchical.

the evolution of the Internet of things (IoT) drives the incorporation of numerous devices into a huge infrastructure where various services can be provided. Devices are located close to users being capable to interact with them and their environment to collect data. the collected data are transferred to the Cloud through the 'intervention' of the Edge computing (EC) infrastructure. Multiple nodes are present at the EC that can undertake the responsibility of keeping some processing activities close to end users, thus, minimizing the latency in the provision of responses. In this paper, we elaborate on a model that supports an efficient data management mechanism to proactively decide the location where data should be stored. We aim at concluding a number of datasets exhibiting a high accuracy as exposed by their solidity. the proposed approach deals with the similarity of the collected data and the already formulated datasets before we decide the final allocation. Any decision is made upon the synopses of the discussed datasets avoiding the processing of huge volumes of data. Additionally, we elaborate on an ensemble scheme for matching the incoming observations and the available synopses. the performance of the proposed scheme is depicted by the relevant numerical outcomes.

In our study, we modelled forest canopy height (FCH) using multi sensor data, including Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI - Relative Height (RH98)) Lidar data. We employed advanced machine learning (ML) techniques, specifically Random Forest (RF) and Classification and Regression Trees (CART) for their accuracy, robustness, and effectiveness in handling complex remote sensing data, on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform in the Djelfa “Souariz, Dar Chioukh” Reforestation Region of Algeria by following several phases, beginning with loading the data and proceeding to map the predicted forest canopy height for each model. We have used both statistical metrics, coefficient of determination (R squared), and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) to evaluate the accuracy of prediction for each model. the RF model indicates that “Elevation” is the most significant variable, followed by (NIR, Green, and SWIR1) bands,” while the interquartile range (IQR) of the VV polarization “VV_iqr” has the least impact. It achieves high predictive accuracy with an R 2 of 0.899 in training and 0.831 in validation, with RMSE values of 0.6407 m and 0.8036 m, respectively. In comparison, the CART model also highlights Elevation, (SWIR1 and Green) bands, but with slightly lower performance, showing an R 2 of 0.865 in training and 0.732 in validation, and RMSE values of 0.7356 m and 1.0442 m, respectively. therefore, the RF model is preferred here for its superior predictive performance.
