the growing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in low-voltage (LV) distribution networks is changing their historically passive nature into a more active one. this fact increasingly requires an active control that enables the best operation strategy of the resources installed there. However, the analysis of these types of networks still requires new methodologies to investigate and evaluate the effects that DERs have on the electrical parameters of the distribution system. therefore, this paper develops a methodology based on the voltage sensitivity, which allows the assessment of different control strategies over DERs installed in unbalanced LV networks. Based on the characteristics of these grids, this methodology uses an algorithm that can be applied to different power flow simulation software as long as they allow the modelling of unbalanced systems. this tool makes possible the study of the behavior of LV networks in order to implement efficient control strategies. Furthermore, the algorithm is tested in a real scenario where the restrictions over the DERs installed in the distribution network are reduced to the minimum by using a control strategy that takes into consideration the calculated voltage sensitivity coefficients.

distributed Monitoring systems (DMS) are essential to implement global policies and daily practices to preserve and improve the energy efficiency of an organization. the Level of Coverage (LoC) is a primary aspect in design, evaluation and implementation/extension of a DMS. the LoC is a numeric indicator representing the ability of a DMS to properly monitor the energy consumption/production in specific Zones and for particular Uses. It allows comparison and choice among several DMS implementations, differing for number and positioning of the measuring instruments. this paper presents a new method for LoC computation. It can be easily implemented in SW and allows to directly calculate not only the LoC of the whole DMS and its subsections but also semi-aggregated LoCs referred to specific Uses or specific Zones. the latter aspect is very useful for assessing the energy monitoring plan adopted in mandatory or voluntary energy audits.

With the increasing size of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) and datasets, DNN training will consume a lot of time. Various distributed strategies have been utilized to speed up the training process. Nevertheless, the frequent communication between different computational nodes dramatically limits the scale of the cluster. Currently, many gradient compression methods (e.g., Sparsification, Quantization, Low-Rank) have been proposed to optimize the transmission process. Since each layer needs to be processed and compressed respectively before transmission, a rash of time-consuming tensor operations is demanded. To alleviate this issue, we propose a layer-based sparsification method, which stems from the observation that the learning efficiency and convergence speed of different layers of DNN is different during the training process. Instead of compressing all gradients in an iteration, some layers are preferentially selected using a well-designed sliding window, which largely avoids unnecessary tensor operations. the sliding window is adjusted according to the dynamic characteristics of the parameter during the DNN training. Extensive experiments on one Text task and two Image Classification tasks are conducted to validate the efficiency of the proposed method in the same environment configuration, where the gradient compression adopts the layer-based sparsification and the other three comparative state-of-the-art methods. the total training time, communication time, and model accuracy are collected and analyzed. Sufficient experimental results demonstrate that both training and communication time can be greatly reduced, which is especially up to 60% in some cases. Additionally, despite slightly decreased within 1% model quality, the results indicate that the improvement in throughput can be as high as 50%.

In recent years, great attention has been paid on Wireless sensors Networks (WSN) in agriculture sector. Nowadays, the problems that limit their use are the high cost of and the limited autonomy of each node. the design of high efficiency converters can provide great help in breaking down these limitations. this paper shows a procedure for sizing the photovoltaic panel, the battery and the converter capable of maximizing autonomy and reducing costs. the potential of the system is validated through simulations.

With the ubiquitous advancement in smart medical devices and systems, the potential of Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) network is evolving in modern healthcare systems. the medical professionals (doctors, nurses, or medical experts) can access vitals and sensitive physiological information about the patients and provide proper treatment to improve the quality of life through the RPM network. However, the wireless nature of communication in the RPM network makes it challenging to design an efficient mechanism for secure communication. Many authentication schemes have been proposed in recent years to ensure the security of the RPM network. Pseudonym, digital signature, and Authenticated Key Exchange (AKE) protocols are used for the Internet of Medical things (IoMT) to develop secure authorization and privacy-preserving communication. However, traditional authentication protocols face overhead challenges due to maintaining a large set of key-pairs or pseudonyms results on the hospital cloud server. In this research work, we identify this research gap and propose a novel secure and efficient privacy-preserving authentication scheme using cuckoo filters for the RPM network. the use of cuckoo filters in our proposed scheme provides an efficient way for mutual anonymous authentication and a secret shared key establishment process between medical professionals and patients. Moreover, we identify the misbehaving sensor nodes using a correlation-based anomaly detection model to establish secure communication. the security analysis and formal security validation using SPAN and AVISPA tools show the robustness of our proposed scheme against message modification attacks, replay attacks, and man-in-the-middle attacks.

this paper proposes a novel distributed mechanism, named gradient push algorithm (GPA), to improve the shortage in convex function optimization, such as limitations of adjacent matrix and fixed topology. the algorithm is raised based on gradient algorithm and perturbed push sum protocol in dynamic topology of wireless sensor network (WSN). First, we develop the update rule of GPA, and bring 4 lemmas to reveal its convergence attribution. Second, in order to prove convergence of the lemma, we analyze the algorithm quantitatively, whose result shows that perturbed push sum protocol (PSP) converged to the optimal solution at rate of $$ O\left({{{\ln t} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\ln t} {\sqrt t }}} \right. \kern-0pt} {\sqrt t }}} \right) $$. Finally, we check its convergence through simulation. Both theory analysis and simulation results show that, the new algorithm avoids the limitation of adjacent matrix, and will convergent to the same optimal solution, which meets the need of dynamic topology in WSN. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.

Nowadays, distributed System Operators (DSOs) are facing more and more difficult challenges in meeting the user needs with an increasing overall power demand, at the same time guaranteeing the required level of reliability. A possible solutions is offered by the Demand Response (DR) management, aiming to reduce the total load demand of the distribution system during peak periods in order to maintain the integrity of the network and stability of the whole system. the paper analyses different scenarios based on real data from the distribution grid of Milan (Italy), evaluating benefits and costs of DR implementation in three different plants, to solve problems related to feeders congestion, power losses, and voltage drops, through either the scheduling or remote control of distributed resources. Moreover, load shape considerations suggests the possibility to integrate in the system a higher share of photovoltaic (PV) generation, of which the effects on DR are also evaluated in the paper.

distributed generation (DG) resources based on solar and wind energies are among the DGs that can optimize the voltage profile and reduce network losses by optimal locating and sizing in distribution systems. In this paper, 4-Rule Harmony Search (4-RHS) algorithm is presented for optimal placement and sizing of the renewable DG resources. In this regard, installation of the DG is performed by loss sensitivity factors first in the most candidate buses. then, the 4-RHS is employed for placement and sizing of DGs from the selected buses. In 4-RHS, an extra rule is added to standard HS. the 4-RHS is studied on ieee 69-bus distribution system. the results comparison of the 4-RHS algorithm with the standard HS algorithm and other optimization methods in the literature shows the efficiency and effectiveness of the 4-RHS in finding the optimal location and size of renewable DG resources and subsequently reducing losses and improving voltage profiles. © 2021, the Editor(s) (if applicable) and the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Binary neural network (BNN) is widely used in speech recognition, image processing and other fields to save memory and speed up computing. However, the accuracy of the existing binarization scheme in the realistic dataset is obviously low, and the input layer uses 32-bit floating point to avoid excessive precision loss, which requires additional computing units and increases the computational burden. therefore, it is very important to improve the input layer, save computing resources and reduce precision loss. In this paper, we propose a parallel convolution binary neural network accelerator architecture (PC-BNA). Based on our proposed BNN model, we design an efficient field programmable gate array (FPGA) based accelerator. the input of the first layer is binarized, the traditional binary convolution layer is replaced by a parallel binary convolution, and the network building blocks are improved. the experimental results show that the proposed PC-BNA has higher accuracy and better performance on CIFAR-10. the image recognition accuracy is as high as 91.4%, which is superior to the state-of-art of the BNN accelerator. Compared to the state-of-the-art BNN model, when using the same model size, the use of look-up-table (LUT) saves 9.08%, and the digital signal processor (DSP) saves 27.7%. the results suggest that it is promising for PC-BNA in future high performance mobile artificial intelligence applications.
