We focus on the problem of optimal power allocation for a two user interference channel characterized by mixed Channel State Information (CSI), which includes instantaneous information for the direct channels and statistical information for the interference channels. For this model, we introduce a general framework for optimizing the power allocation such as to maximize some generic Quality of Service (QoS) performance metric (or equivalently minimize some cost function). We model this problem as a function approximation problem where the function to be learned is the mapping between CSI and the solution to the optimization problem. We then tackle this problem borrowing ideas from ensemble learning. In particular, using generalized linear models (which are characterized by low complexity and can be implemented even at network nodes characterized by strong computational limitations), we produce different weak learners for learning to solve the considered optimization problem and based on ensemble learning theory, we combine such learners to produce stronger learners. We assess the performance of our framework by applying it on a particular resource allocation problem, and the obtained performance results indicate that the proposed approach can deliver near-optimal performance. © 2021 ieee.

In recent years, virtual power plants (VPPs) rose as an effective framework to aggregate the collective potential of distributed energy resources (DERs), including distributed generation (DG) and energy storage systems (ESS), through demand response (DR) program implementation. In this work, the operation of two indispensable DER assets, electric vehicles (EVs) and photovoltaic-equipped parking lots (PVPLs), is coordinated in an optimal energy management framework, in order to study their possible aggregation as a VPP. the proposed energy management system (EMS) was developed using the optimization and simulation tools, namely GAMS and MATLAB, and is intended for use by grid operators to coordinate the operation of PVPLs and home energy management systems (HEMSs) in the context of smart cities. the developed model was validated and tested by considering real-life case studies in the city of Porto, Portugal.

Pipelines often cross challenging terrains where natural hazards are the main risk for their integrity. Environmental conditions can also worsen over the infrastructure lifetime. To reduce the risk of disasters, integrity programs are developed and require tools for early detection of threats that can lead to a failure with dramatic social, environmental and economic consequences. Fiber optic based Geotechnical Monitoring System (GMS) have been used and implemented as an efficient prevention tools of these programs. As a good example, GMS is successfully in operation to detect landslides using distributed Strain Sensing along the Sierra section of the Peru LNG pipeline since 2010. the continuous operation of the GMS also revealed that infiltration, erosion and sand dune migration can be detected using distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS). First, hydraulic erosion was evidenced in the Sierra region. More recently, events whose origin is eolian erosion and sand dune migration have been identified. A thermal analysis was then conducted to analyze the measured thermal signatures of the detected event. It revealed that the DoC (Depth-of-Cover) can be computed from the temporal response of the fiber optic cable. the time lag between ambient temperature and temperature of the cable directly relates to its burial depth. the obtained data are compared with site inspection observation which confirm the validity of the DTS approach. the method, combining DTS measurements on existing communication cable with thermal analysis, offers the ability to monitor erosion related geohazards in both Sierra and desert sections of the pipeline. the results of the presented work illustrate the potential value of fiber optic sensing to mitigate geohazard risks. It not only enhances the efficiency of the integrity program detecting and localizing threats, it also improves and rationalizes the maintenance activities as focused surveys can be conducted.

Fog computing has been identified as an enabler for many modern technologies like connected vehicles and the Industrial Internet of things (IIoT). Such technologies are characterized by the integration of applications with different levels of criticality on shared platforms, which are referred to as mixed-criticality systems. Mixed-criticality systems typically use static scheduling for critical tasks;however, static scheduling is not suitable for scenarios where fog nodes run dynamic non-critical applications that implement, e.g., maintenance checks and data analytics. To address this challenge, in this paper, we differentiate between critical tasks that are statically allocated (called "native") and dynamic non-critical tasks that may migrate across fog nodes (called "temporary"). We propose a static scheduling approach that maximizes the number of temporary tasks that can be added at runtime, without negatively impacting the already scheduled native tasks. this approach enables fog nodes to become more suitable for IIoT environments by configuring them with extensible schedules for the native tasks. To evaluate our approach, we perform experiments considering several test cases, which show that given a number of native tasks, the generated extensible schedules enable the fog nodes to run a larger number of temporary tasks at the same time. Furthermore, the extensible schedules exhibit 7.8% less missed deadlines (on average), compared to the non-extensible schedules.

With the advent of distributed generation (DG), the need for efficient power electronic converter is increasing as the incorporation of renewables with battery unit and loads rely heavily on them. this paper suggests an original structure of high-gain DC to DC converter named as "Two-Tier converter" with the reduction in voltage stress. the configuration is resultant of stacking two-stage of the classical boost converter. the voltage gain offered is high for even lower values of duty cycle as the relation of gain is quadratic. Also, the converter current at the input is continuous, and the load configuration offered is grounded. Analysis and operational modes of the proposed converters and effect of the effective series resistance of inductors on voltage gain are presented in detail. A comparative analysis of suggested and new high-gain converters is presented in detail. the suggested configuration is confirmed using detailed simulation studies.

this paper presents a combined approach based on Real Power Loss Sensitivity Index (RPLSI) and artificial ecosystem-based optimization (AEO) to determine the optimal allocation of Photovoltaic (PV) and Wind Turbine (WT) based distributed generation (DG) units to minimize power loss of the distribution network (DN). RPLSI is used to determine most suitable buses for integrating DG units in RDN. AEO is recently developed optimizer, inspired from the flow of energy in an ecosystem on the earth. the effectiveness of the developed approach is validated on the standard 33-bus RDN. the results obtained by AOE is compared with other meta-heuristic algorithms such as Harris Hawks Optimizer (HHO) and Henry gas solubility optimization (HGSO). the results indicate the better performance of AEO compared with other methods. Accordingly, AEO can be a very favorable method to cope with the optimal DG allocation problem.

Machine learning applications are getting prevelent on various computing platforms, including cloud servers, smart phones, IoT devices, etc. For these applications, security is one of the most emergent requirements. While trusted execution environment (TEE) like ARM TrustZone has been widely used to protect critical prodecures including fingerprint authentication and mobile payment, state-of-the-art implementations of TEE OS lack the support for multi-threading and are not suitable for computing-intensive workloads. this is because current TEE OSes are usually designed for hosting security critical tasks, which are typically small and non computing-intensive. thus, most of TEE OSes do not support multi-threading in order to minimize the size of the trusted computing base (TCB). In this paper, we propose TEEp, a system that enables multi-threading in TEE without weakening security, and supports existing multi-threaded applications to run directly in TEE. Our design includes a novel multi-threading mechanism based on the cooperation between the TEE OS and the host OS, without trusting the host OS. We implement our system based on OP-TEE and port it to two platforms: a HiKey 970 development board as mobile platform, and a Huawei Hi1610 ARM server as server platform. We run TensorFlow Lite on the development board and TensorFlow on the server for performance evaluation in TEE. the result shows that our system can improve the throughput of TensorFlow Lite on 5 models to 3.2x when 4 cores are available, with 13.5% overhead compared with Linux on average.

In the context of Smart Communities microgrids, the paper proposes a control approach for the power management among several DC microgrids, called by the authors Smart User Networks, aggregated in a Virtual Energy District. More specifically, the DC bus signaling control strategy is proposed as control approach for the power management of a single smart user network and for several smart user networks aggregated in a Virtual Energy District. the objective is to meet the power profile requirements sent by a supervision entity of the Virtual Energy District, named City Energy Provider. the principal characteristic of the proposed control approach is that the DC bus voltage of each Smart User Network is the only information carrier implementing the control strategy in a decentralized and distributed manner. In this way, also in case of absence of communication link among the components of a Smart User Network, a stable and continuous operating is guaranteed. Ansys Simplorer simulation results demonstrate the performance and the effectiveness of the proposed power management and control strategy.

Pervasive computing applications deal with the incorporation of intelligent components around end users to facilitate their activities. Such applications can be provided upon the vast infrastructures of the Internet of things (IoT) and Edge computing (EC). IoT devices collect ambient data transferring them towards the EC and Cloud for further processing. EC nodes could become the hosts of distributed datasets where various processing activities take place. the future of EC involves numerous nodes interacting with the IoT devices and themselves in a cooperative manner to realize the desired processing. A critical issue for concluding this cooperative approach is the exchange of data synopses to have EC nodes informed about the data present in their peers. Such knowledge will be useful for decision making related to the execution of processing activities. In this paper, we propose an uncertainty driven model for the exchange of data synopses. We argue that EC nodes should delay the exchange of synopses especially when no significant differences with historical values are present. Our mechanism adopts a Fuzzy Logic (FL) system to decide when there is a significant difference with the previous reported synopses to decide the exchange of the new one. Our scheme is capable of alleviating the network from numerous messages retrieved even for low fluctuations in synopses. We analytically describe our model and evaluate it through a large set of experiments. Our experimental evaluation targets to detect the efficiency of the approach based on the elimination of unnecessary messages while keeping immediately informed peer nodes for significant statistical changes in the distributed datasets. © 2020 ieee.

An IoT-blockchain system is proposed to handle big data generated by a distributed network of sensors and controllers in an interactive manner. the system is designed using the Ethereum platform, which utilizes smart contracts, programmed in Solidity, to execute and manage data generated by IoT sensors and devices such as Raspberry Pi 4 and add-on hardware security modules. the proposed system runs a number of applications hosted by a local machine used to validate transactions. It then sends data to the rest of the network through InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) and Ethereum Swarm, forming a closed IoT ecosystem mastered by blockchain where a number of distributed IoT devices communicate and interact, thus forming a closed controlled environment. A prototype with four IoT handling units distributed over a wide geographical space was deployed to examine its feasibility, performance, and costs. Initial results indicate that big IoT data retrieval, storage is feasible, and interactivity is possible when meeting certain conditions of speed, cost and throughput.
