In the scope of this paper the profitable use of blockchain technology or so-called distributed ledger technologies in the context of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) will be examined. SHM is the continuous or periodic and automated method for determining and monitoring the condition of an object. this is done by measurements with permanently installed or integrated sensors and by analyzing the hereby generated data. During those monitoring periods it often happens that some of the installed sensors are not working correctly. this may be caused by interference, by a corruption or even a manipulation. therefore, the sensors can deliver abnormal data. Consequently, the delivered data is the starting point to overwatch the function of the sensors. Since on the monitored object multiple sensors are in use the measured data of those different sensors can be compared. If one sensor delivers deviating data it is likely that the sensor is not working the way it should. this verification process is being automated with blockchain technology. the correctness of the sensor data is then stored with the measured data itself on the chain. thus, the entire generated information is securely and reliably tracked within the blockchain. Another advantage is the high scalability and decentralization of the blockchain. this is especially important when dealing with monitoring systems that can also have the need for scaling. For this described use case the implementation and application of the blockchain Hyperleder Fabric will be shown in the scope of this work. © 2024, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Wireless sensor Network (WSN) applications are expanding every day, and wireless sensor networks are being used to access a variety of applications and resources. Furthermore, while fast adoption of wireless sensor networks enhances network usage, it suffers from power shortages owing to the low active power of wireless sensor nodes. A variety of power management techniques have been tried to enhance lifespan maximization;however they all have flaws in terms of quality and effectiveness. An Improved Time Division Multi attribute Sleep (ITDMS) protocol using the popular APTEEN algorithm has indeed been explored in this study to address this issue. Cluster formation was accomplished using the APTEEN protocol, and the suggested approach exchanges info about the status with its neighbors at every data collecting time slot. the technique selects the condition using approximation based on neighbor information, neighbor's power parameters, as well as its own metrics. the technique determines the condition and shifts its mode among sleep and wake up depending on the approximated level. With a total throughput of 98.4%, the suggested technique extends the life of WSNs and increases data collecting efficiency. © 2022 ieee.

the primary contribution of this paper is designing and prototyping a real-time edge computing system, RhythmEdge, that is capable of detecting changes in blood volume from facial videos (Remote Photoplethysmography;rPPG), enabling cardiovascular health assessment instantly. the benefits of RhythmEdge include non-invasive measurement of cardiovascular activity, real-time system operation, inexpensive sensing components, and computing. RhythmEdge captures a short video of the skin using a camera and extracts rPPG features to estimate the Photoplethysmography (PPG) signal using a multi-task learning framework while offloading the edge computation. In addition, we intelligently apply a transfer learning approach to the multi-task learning framework to mitigate sensor heterogeneities to scale the RhythmEdge prototype to work with a range of commercially available sensing and computing devices. Besides, to further adapt the software stack for resource-constrained devices, we postulate novel pruning and quantization techniques (Quantization: FP32, FP16;Pruned-Quantized: FP32, FP16) that efficiently optimize the deep feature learning while minimizing the runtime, latency, memory, and power usage. We benchmark RhythmEdge prototype for three different cameras and edge computing platforms while evaluating it on three publicly available datasets and an in-house dataset collected under challenging environmental circumstances. Our analysis indicates that RhythmEdge performs on par with the existing contactless heart rate monitoring systems while utilizing only half of its available resources. Furthermore, we perform an ablation study with and without pruning and quantization to report the model size (87%) vs. inference time (70%) reduction. We attested the efficacy of RhythmEdge prototype with a maximum power of 8W and a memory usage of 290MB, with a minimal latency of 0.0625 seconds and a runtime of 0.64 seconds per 30 frames.

In order to reduce the communication load in general distributed computing frameworks such as MapReduce Li et al. introduced coded distributed computing (CDC). the authors in [1] proposed a scheme for cascaded coded distributed computing on general networks. Although the numbers of input files and output functions in [1] are much less than those in [2], large numbers of input files and output functions are still required. In this paper, we present a new CDC scheme which 1) designs the assignments of input file and output function;2) requires less number of input files and output functions compared with those in the scheme derived by [1]. Meanwhile, the ratio of communication load to that of the scheme in [1] is less than 4/3. © 2022 ieee.

Load flow analysis in power system is very important for the planning and expansion of power systems. Micro-grids are gaining popularity due to the amalgamation of distributed generations (DG), and it is crucial to conduct a load flow study of micro-grids. there are two operating modes for micro-grids, the first as grid-connected mode and the second is islanded mode. In the grid-connected mode of operation, load flow analysis can be easily carried away by using conventional load flow techniques. However, in the islanded mode of operation, the conventional load flow techniques can not be used, because of the absence of slack bus. these conventional techniques are modified, so that these techniques can be applied to perform load flow analysis in is-landed balanced micro-grids. this paper presents the load flow analysis of balanced islanded micro-grids using the Modified Gauss-Seidel method (MGS). MGS is applied on 6-bus and 12-bus test systems. © 2021 ieee.

In this work, we propose and fabricate a deformable and arrayed fingertip sensor to assist the manipulator in sensing the hardness of objects. the sensor consists of a semi-cylindrical Ecoflex and an array of electronic skin, which is attached to a robotic gripper for griping objects of different hardness. the electrical signals generated by the fingertip sensor vary depending on the hardness of the gripped object. After analyzing the signals, with a fixed gripping force, we found that the harder the object, the greater the average intensity of the signals collected by the sensor. this is consistent with the regularity shown by the finite element analysis method. the data collected by the sensors were used to train the deep neural network and classify ten different hardness objects, and the results showed that the recognition accuracy was as high as 91.6%.

Nowadays, buildings are responsible for large consumption of energy in our cities. Moreover, buildings can be seen as the smallest entity of urban energy systems. On these premises, in this article, we present a flexible and distributed cosimulation platform that exploits a multimodeling approach to simulate and evaluate energy performance in smart buildings. the developed platform exploits the Mosaik cosimulation framework and implements the functional mock-up interface standard in order to couple and synchronize heterogeneous simulators and models. the platform combines in a shared simulation environment: 1) the thermal performance of the building simulated with EnergyPlus;2) a heat pump integrated with a proportional-integral-derivative control strategy modeled in Modelica to satisfy the heating demand of the building;3) an electrical energy storage system modeled in MATLAB Simulink;and 4) different Python models used to simulate household occupancy, electrical loads, photovoltaic production, and smart meters, respectively. the platform guarantees a plug-and-play integration of models and simulators, in which one or more models can be easily replaced without affecting the whole simulation engine. Finally, we present a demonstration example to test the functionalities, capability, and usability of the developed platform and discuss future developments of our framework.

A proper post-operative care should be provided to orthopaedic patients in order to recover quickly from surgery or leg fracture. If no proper care is given, the recovery period will be extended. the primary goal of the proposed strategy is to reduce leg strain while maintaining a normal gait. As a part of the proposed effort, a footwear equipped with a sensor unit will be developed to monitor and direct the patient by modifying the weight distribution pattern for the legs. If the patient tries to apply extra pressure to one of the legs, the sensor equipped footwear will send an alert. An arm band with a microcontroller, battery, and a Bluetooth module allowing autonomous and wireless operation is meant to provide notifications to patients. the proposed research findings are entirely focused on both legs equally as 50% to each, with an average variation of 1.08333%. © 2022 ieee.

Social airborne sensing (SAS) is emerging as a new sensing paradigm that leverages the complementary aspects of social sensing and airborne sensing (i.e., UAVs) for reliable information collection. In this paper, we present HeteroSAS, a heterogeneous resource management framework for "all-in-the-air" SAS in disaster response applications. Current SAS approaches use UAVs to only capture data, but carry out computation on ground-based processing nodes that may be unavailable in disaster scenarios and thus consider a single model of UAV along with only one type of task (i.e., data capture). In this paper, we explore the opportunity to exploit the complementary strengths of different UAV models to accomplish all stages of sensing tasks (i.e., data capturing, maneuvering, and computation) exclusively "in-the-air". However, several challenges exist in developing such a resource management framework: i) handling the uncertain social signals in presence of the heterogeneity of UAVs and tasks;and ii) adapting to constantly changing cyber-physical-social environments. the HeteroSAS framework addresses these challenges by building a novel resource management framework that observes the environment and learns the optimal strategy for each UAV using techniques from multi-agent reinforcement learning, game theory, and ensemble learning. the evaluation with a real-world case study shows that HeteroSAS outperforms the state-of-the-art in terms of detection effectiveness, deadline hit rate, and robustness on heterogeneity.
