the research and application of therapeutic robotics for children have gained significant attention. this study introduces a system for emotion recognition in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) children that utilizes infrared thermal imaging cameras to capture the frontal facial images. the paper focuses on the development to automate, recognize and track the subjects frontal face using the Shape-Adapted Mean Shift algorithm (SAMShift) applied to thermal images. this system targets the identification of affective states in ASD children and employs non-invasive thermal imaging instead of invasive sensor patches. By integrating tracking and affective state analysis within a single modality, the system addresses the limitations of traditional visual-based systems, which often suffer from invasiveness due to the use of sensor patches, difficulty in automating and tracking facial features, and challenges in accurately identifying affective states. the SAMShift algorithm, implemented in the LabVIEW® vision module environment, is utilized for tracking the frontal face image. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, achieving an average accuracy of 89.20% and an average precision of 95.40%. this research contributes to advancing the field of therapeutic robotics for children with ASD by providing an automated, non-invasive, and accurate approach to emotion recognition. © 2023 ieee.

With increasing integration of electric vehicles (EV) in the distribution network, new challenges have emerged for the power system operators. One of the typical challenges is EV charging coordination for fulfilling EV customers' demands while satisfying storage constraints. this paper presents a model predictive based control (MPC) approach for coordination of different voltage regulation devices and EV charging with the consideration of EV users' stochastic behavior. the proposed approach aims at maintaining the voltages within desired limits as well as charging the EVs according to the charging requests. Simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed coordinated charging is better than the uncontrolled charging. © 2022 ieee.

Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have various uses in photodetectors, solar cell devices and spectroscopic signal enhancement. In this paper, we synthesize mercury telluride (HgTe) CQDs and study the effect of the QDs size distribution on their infrared absorbance spectrum. the resulting dots are characterized using x-ray diffraction analysis and the size was found to be about 8.6 nm with a standard deviation of about 2 nm using high-resolution transmission electron microscope. the produced CQDs are optically characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer in diffuse reflectance mode in the wavelength range from 3 to 11 μm. the absorption shows a wide absorption edge rather than a sharp feature. the measured data are fitted with a sum of a polynomial and five gaussian functions to extract the absorption lines of the QDs. © 2022 ieee.

As an increasing number of electric vehicles, the coordinated charging algorithms attract significant attention to reduce the operational costs and facilitate the scalability. this paper derives a distributed electric vehicle charging algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers framework. Taking the total operational cost of electric vehicles as well as battery cell constraints into consideration, optimal charging currents of electric vehicles are obtained without central coordinators. the numerical simulation is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed distributed optimal charging strategy. © 2022 ieee.

With the increasing popularity of smart homes, there is a growing need for efficient and effective multiple hazards detection and alarming systems to ensure the safety of homeowners. In this study, a multi-sensor IoT-based system for multiple hazards detection and alarming in smart homes is evaluated. the system integrates various sensors such as temperature sensors, humidity sensors, gas sensors, and motion sensors, to detect different types of hazards in real-time. the system is also designed to detect potential hazards in homes, such as gas leaks, fires, and floods, and provide real-time alerts to homeowners. To evaluate the system, a series of tests is conducted in a simulated smart home environment. the system is exposed to various potential hazards, such as gas leaks, fires, and floods, and evaluated its ability to detect and provide real-time alerts to homeowners. Proposed results show that the system was able to detect potential hazards with a high degree of accuracy and provide timely alerts to homeowners. the study also assessed the usability and user experience of the system. A survey with a group of homeowners who used the system are conducted and asked them to provide feedback on the system's usability, effectiveness, and overall satisfaction. the results of the survey indicated that the homeowners were highly satisfied with the system's performance and found it easy to use and effective in detecting potential hazards. Overall, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of a multi-sensor IoT-based system for multiple hazards detection and alarming in smart homes. the system's ability to detect potential hazards in real-time and provide timely alerts to homeowners can significantly improve the safety and security of smart homes. this study contributes to the growing body of research on smart home safety and provides insights into the design and evaluation of IoT-based systems for multiple hazards detection and alarming. © 2023 ieee.

Upper-limb hemiparesis resulting from stroke is a common cause of long-term disability. Wearable inertial sensors offer a potential means of developing assessments of motor impairment severity that are more objective, ecologically valid, and that can be administered frequently than traditional clinical motor scales. Our recent work proposed a method for unobtrusively estimating upper-limb impairment severity by analyzing submovements extracted from the performance of large, continuous, random movements. Here, we validate that similar analytic methods are able to estimate upper-limb impairment severity from the performance of activities of daily living (ADLs) using only the data obtained from a single wrist-worn inertial sensor. Twenty stroke survivors were equipped with an nine-axis inertial sensor on the stroke-affected wrist and performed four ADLs that involved upper-limb movements and required manipulation of the environment. A random forest model trained on the kinematic features of submovements extracted from ADL performance was able to estimate the upper extremity portion of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment with a normalized root mean square error of 17.0% and R-2 = 0.75. these results support the potential for a technology that can assess stroke survivors' real-world upper-limb motor performance in a seamless, minimally-obtrusive manner, though additional development and validation are needed to achieve this vision.

the Internet of things (IoT) is a network of connected objects with sensors, computing power, storage, interconnection capacity, and intelligence. Several Internet of things technologies have enabled society to gain benefits such as less repetitive chores, faster data flow in a communication network, improved information storage and administration, and effective monitoring of varied environments, among other things. When IoT devices are employed in metropolitan areas, they can monitor health indicators, air quality and humidity, ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure, land and air traffic, soil monitoring, agriculture and livestock, public infrastructure services, and the transmission of danger alerts. Smart Cities, a current concept aimed at improving the use of these technologies and urban space management, necessitate the usage of IoT devices in these urban centres. One of the major scientific issues is to intelligently maximise the utilisation of these resources using methodologies like ACO (Ant Colony Optimization), which is based on the microworld of ants. As a result, the purpose of this study is to conduct a detailed analysis of the ACO swarm method's optimization of the energy use of nodes in an IoT network, using simulations, data collection, and analysis to see if its application provides an effective increase in the lifetime of the investigated devices in an IoT network. the findings of this research will be utilized to enhance the processes that are used in routing events present in IoT scenarios. © 2022 ieee.

this work studies Nash equilibrium seeking for a class of stochastic aggregative games, where each player has an expectation-valued objective function depending on its local strategy and the aggregate of all players' strategies. We propose a distributed algorithm with operator extrapolation, in which each player maintains an estimate of this aggregate by exchanging this information with its neighbors over a time-varying network, and updates its decision through the mirror descent method. An operator extrapolation at the search direction is applied such that the two step historical gradient samples are utilized to accelerate the convergence. Under the strongly monotone assumption on the pseudo-gradient mapping, we prove that the proposed algorithm can achieve the optimal convergence rate of for Nash equilibrium seeking of stochastic games. © 2022 ieee.

Due to the widespread nature of sun-related health risks, sophisticated UV monitoring systems are urgently needed. this research study introduces a cloud-based UV monitoring system with the intent of remotely tracking and analyzing UV exposure in real time. the system incorporates a network of UV sensors deployed in various locations, continuously collecting UV radiation data. these sensors are linked to a cloud system, which allows for easy sharing and processing of collected data. As a result, we're working to perfect a cutting-edge device that can monitor vitamin D absorption, measure cumulative UV exposure, and warn of impending danger. Extensive studies have demonstrated the benefits of UV exposure for both general health and protection against the newly discovered coronavirus. However, finding a happy medium is important because too much sun exposure can cause cancer, lupus flares, and cataracts. the proposed model gives users the ability to set their own daily UV exposure limits, taking into account clinically validated thresholds for various skin tones. the developed sensor module is able to measure the UV index with high precision even in bright sunlight because it closely mimics the skin erythema spectrum. © 2023 ieee.
