In this paper we analyze a two-step detection scheme for use in distributed sensor systems (e. g. statistical MIMO radar). the scheme arises when a data rate restriction forces each of the distributed systems to censor their detection statistics before sharing. We present the Neyman-Pearson (NP) two-step detection rule for a non-fluctuating target model (Swerling 0), which is non-linear and requires a priori knowledge of the target SNR. We then analyze the performance of a practical two-step detection rule under the non-fluctuating target model.

We present a deep reinforcement learning approach to design an automotive radar system with integrated sensing and communication. In the proposed system, sparse transmit arrays with quantized phase shifter are used to carry out transmit beamforming to enhance the performance of both radar sensing and communication. through interaction with environment, the automotive radar learns a reward that reflects the difference between mainlobe peak and the peak sidelobe level in radar sensing mode or communication user feedback in communication mode, and intelligently adjust its beamforming vector. the Wolpertinger policy based actioncritic network is introduced for beamforming vector learning, which solves the dimension curse due to huge beamforming action space.

this paper describes a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) generalization of space-time adaptive processing (STAP) to mitigate radar clutter subject to multipath propagation between transmit and receive arrays. Multipath clutter can occur when surface returns are multiply scattered, causing significant Doppler frequency and wavenumber spreads. In the worst case, multipath propagation may cause Doppler spread clutter to return via the receiver mainlobe. In such situations, conventional STAP cannot mitigate Doppler spread mainlobe clutter without also suppressing the target. MIMO radar techniques using orthogonal waveforms have been proposed for increasing radar coverage rate often at the expense of employing significantly larger radar time-bandwidth products. In this paper, we consider a MIMO approach wherein conventional radar waveforms are phase-coded to be orthogonal after Doppler processing at the receiver, i.e. in "slow-time." Slow-time MIMO has the advantages of being bandwidth efficient and easily implemented without the need to modify the receiver before range pulse-compression. In this paper, the mathematical formulation of MIMO STAP is developed for both direct-path and multipath clutter scenarios. At each slant range, the MIMO STAP processor operates on a receive sensor, transmitted pulses, and slow-time phase code channel data cube. Coherent combination of the decoded slow-time channels at the receiver permits effective control of the transmit array pattern by receive post-processing as a function of slant range. Simulation results demonstrate SNR gains when a transmit null is steered in the outbound direction towards the multiply scattered clutter.

We consider the problem of selecting anchors for sensor network localization to optimize a metric of the error covariance of the position estimates. We show that an interesting metric is a modular set function, which allows a globally optimal selection to be obtained using a simple greedy algorithm. We also consider a separate but related problem of choosing a subset of distance measurements between pairs of sensors to optimize a metric of the error covariance. We utilize again modularity properties of an associated set function to construct networks with desirable algebraic rigidity properties. the results are illustrated via numerical examples, which scale to problems beyond the capabilities of current state-of-the-art convex relaxation techniques.

In this paper, the element-pulse coding (EPC) based multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is studied for resolving range ambiguity in clutter-free scenario. the fundamental transmit and receive procedures as well as the relationship between encoding and decoding are presented. To address the range ambiguity issue, the EPC entries in element dimension are extended to be an arbitrary permutation of the Fourier basis entries. the beampattern is designed to extract the desired target signal while suppressing targets from nuisance range regions. Both conventional and enhanced array beamforming methods are discussed. Simulation examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

this work is dedicated towards finding the Direction of Arrival (DOA) of Wideband signals using Sub-Nyquist samples. In a sensor array, the time delay between two sensors depends on the position of sources and thus its estimate could be used in finding the DOA of the sources. In this paper, we propose to estimate the time delay among sensors using cross-correlation of the signals received at the sensor array. the wider the bandwidth of the signal, the sharper will be the peak of its autocorrelation. thus, it would be safe to assume that the autocorrelation of a wideband signal is sparse. the number of sharp peaks in the autocorrelation will be the same as the number of uncorrelated sources. the strength of Compressive Sampling (CS) lies in solving an underdetermined problem with a very high probability, provided the solution is sparse. this fits our wideband DOA problem very well, and is used to estimate the autocorrelation and hence the DOA of the signals with sub-Nyquist sampling. Simulations are given to support this concept.

the passive electronically scanned array (PESA) is widely used due to its simple structure and low cost. Its antenna weights have unit modulus and thus, only the weights phases can be controlled. PESA has limited degrees of freedom for beampattern design, where only the direction of the main beam can be controlled. In this paper we propose a novel way to improve the beamforming capability of PESA by endowing it with more degrees of freedom via the use of double phase shifters (DPS). By doing so, both the magnitude and the phase of the antenna weights can be controlled, allowing for more flexibility in the beampattern design. We also take into account the physical resolution limitation of phase shifters, and propose a method to approximate a given complex beamformer using DPS. Simulation results indicate significant beamforming improvement even at low phase resolution.

We consider the distributed detection of a zero-mean Gaussian signal in an analog wireless sensor network with a fusion center (FC) configured with a large number of antennas. the transmission gains of the sensor nodes are optimized by minimizing the ratio of the log probability of detection (PD) and log probability of false alarm (PFA). We show that the problem is convex with respect to the squared norm of the transmission gains, and that a closed-form solution can be found using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions. Our results indicate that a constant PD can be maintained with decreasing sensor transmit gain provided that the number of antennas increases at the same rate. this is contrasted with the case of a single-antenna FC, where PD is monotonically decreasing with transmit gain. On the other hand, we show that when the transmit power is high, the single-and multi-antenna FC both asymptotically achieve the same PD upper bound.

In mobile communication, mutual coupling between array elements will affect the estimation performance of the existing direction of arrival (DOA) estimators. To tackle this problem, an accurate DOA estimation method for coprime array is developed, where the effect of mutual coupling is eliminated by the banded complex symmetric Toeplitz matrix, and further weakened via two-dimensional (2-D) interpolation. the accuracy of the proposed algorithm is verified by the simulation results in comparison of several DOA estimation approaches as well as Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB).

Compensation for nonlinear distortion caused by power amplifiers being driven into compression is a field that has been extensively explored by a number of authors. More complex models describing the coupled nonlinear distortion that can occur in an active antenna array also exist. To identify these models most authors assume that the output of each power amplifier can be measured directly. For a system with many antennas over-theair identification might be favorable. the problem of identifying a system describing the joint effects of coupled nonlinear distortion over-the-air has been solved by other authors assuming model or setup simplifications. To tackle the problem with a more accurate model, an algorithm for identifying parameters of a Volterra series model describing coupled non-linear distortion in a digital radar is explored and illustrated with simulated data.
