Multidimensional frequency estimation with finite snapshots in the presence of identical frequencies

Recently, an eigenvector-based algorithm has been developed for multidimensional frequency estimation with a, single snapshot of data mixture. Unlike most existing algebraic approaches that estimate frequencies from eigenvalues, the eigenvector-based algorithm achieves automatic frequency pairing without joint diagonalization of multiple matrices, but it fails when there exist identical frequencies in certain dimensions because eigenvectors are not linearly independent anymore. In this paper, we develop an eigenvector-based algorithm for multidimensional frequency estimation with finite data snapshots. We also analyze the identiflability (ID) and performance of the -proposed algorithm. It is shown that our algorithm offers the most relaxed statistical ID condition for multidimensional frequency estimation from finite snapshots. More important, we introduce complex weighting factors so that the algorithm is still operational when there exist identical frequencies in one or more dimensions. Furthermore, the weighting factors are optimized to minimize the mean square errors,of the frequency estimates. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm offers competitive performance when compared to existing algebraic approaches but at lower complexity.

the performance of underwater target detection significantly depends on the statistical distribution of reverberation and knowledge of data correlation for active sonar. To reasonably design constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detectors that exploit knowledge of reverberation characteristics, a preliminary statistical analysis of active sonar echo data is necessary. In this study, we analyze the amplitude statistics of the measured forward-looking sonar echo data after applying the beamforming processing with a variety of distributions including log-normal, Weibull, Rayleigh, K, generalized Pareto (GP) and inverse Gaussian distributions. the results show that for the high-frequency sonar working in shallow water, both the K and the GP distributions can provide a good data fitting, while the GP distribution performs better especially in the tail region of the distribution. At last, the spatio-temporal correlation of data analysis and concluding remarks complete this paper.

In this paper, we present the design of a low cost 44 multiple in multiple out (MIMO) wireless communications system testbed. Over recent years, an increasing number of research laboratories have begun experimental studies aimed at evaluating the achievable performance gains of MIMO technology as proposed in theory. the complexity of the experimental test platforms employed by these institutions have also increased over the years, supporting greater numbers of antennas while providing even more real-time computational processing power. these tremendous increases in capability, however, come at a very steep price which the vast majority of the wireless research community cannot afford. As an alternative, we present the design of a low cost 44 MIMO testbed for researchers solely interested in analyzing the physical layer performance of various MIMO technologies. As a demonstration of our testbed capabilities, we also present the results of a direction of arrival (DOA) experiment using the MUSIC algorithm and also cite another body of work on the experimental performance analysis of space, time, polarization diversity schemes which was also completed with use of the MIMO testbed described herein.

this paper mainly deals with the problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for the ultra sparse nested (USN) MIMO array by operating on two co-prime frequencies. the USN MIMO array consists of a sparse uniform (SU) transmitting array and a more SU receiving array with nested relationship, which generates a SU sum coarray. In this case, the DOA estimation is aliasing because the difference coarray of the sum coarray (DCSC) of the USN MIMO array is also SU for the reference operation frequency. To remove the aliasing, an additional operation frequency with co-prime relationship is utilized to form an extra SU sum coarray where the spacing of two adjacent virtual sensors is co-prime with that of reference frequency(RF). As a result, two co-prime spacings of sum co-arrays are combined into a co-prime sum coarray which provides a desired DCSC with a majority of contiguous virtual sensors. Finally, with respect to these contiguous virtual DCSC sensors, an augmented correlation matrix with contiguous correlation lags is obtained to calculate MUSIC spectrum. Simulation results demonstrate the resolvable ability for more targets than physical sensors and the performance comparison under both cases of proportional and non-propotional target spectra.

In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating the directions-of-arrival (DOAs) and ranges of multiple near-field narrowband signals impinging on a symmetric uniform linear array (ULA) in nonuniform noise in practical applications. By forming a Toeplitz-like correlation matrix from the anti-diagonal elements of the array covariance matrix to convert the nonuniform noise to a uniform one, a new subspace-based localization method is proposed, where the null space is obtained through eigendecomposition of the resultant Toeplitz-like matrix, and the MUSIC method is used to estimate the location parameters, while a new pairing scheme is presented as well. Additionally, an oblique projector based alternating iteration is presented to improve the estimation accuracy of the location parameters, where the "saturation behavior" encountered in most of localization methods is solved effectively. Furthermore, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRB) for the near-field signals in unknown nonuniform noise is also derived explicitly. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through numerical examples.

In satellite-based systems, such as global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), the use of antenna arrays is becoming increasingly common, as it allows various applications, such as jammer/spoofer suppression or improving the positioning accuracy in multipath-environments. Testing such equipment under realistic and reproducible conditions is often not feasible, for example in the case of a not fully deployed system (e.g., Galileo satellites) or testing of classified transmission technologies (e.g., Galileo public regulated service (PRS) receivers). For tests under reproducible and realistic conditions, we propose 3D wave-field synthesis (WFS) in an over-the-air testbed. this allows a realistic emulation of the radio environment under laboratory conditions. In this paper, a feasibility study for such a testbed is presented. Possible antenna setups for a 3D WFS laboratory environment are proposed. For these setups, the 3D WFS accuracy is investigated for emulating different polarization types and multipath reflections with arbitrary source directions. the results show that with presently available hardware for channel emulation and 3D WFS, a virtual electromagnetic environment can be created for testing receivers with (beamforming) antenna arrays of typical size (120 mm-300mm diameter).

In this paper, we address the problem of two-dimensional (2-D) direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for parallel co-prime arrays. To alleviate the tremendous computation burden caused by spectral search and angle pairing, in this paper, we propose an efficient reduced dimensional least spectral search based estimation method with automatic pairing. Specifically, we first utilize the cross-covariance matrix to decouple the 2-D DOA estimation problem into a one-dimensional (1-D) one, and then design a least spectral search based 1-D DOA estimation method according to the relations between true and ambiguous angles. Finally, we estimate the remaining 1-D DOAs via least square criterion with automatic pairing. We evaluate the complexity and present the simulation results to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Space Time Adaptive processing. STAP) is a two-dimensional adaptive filtering technique which uses jointly temporal and spatial dimensions to suppress disturbance and to improve target detection. Disturbance contains both the clutter arriving from signal backscattering of the ground and the thermal noise resulting from the sensors noise. In practical cases, the STAP clutter can be considered to have a low rank structure. Using this assumption, a low rank vector STAP filter is derived based on the projector onto the clutter subspace. With new STAP applications like MIMO STAP or polarimetric STAP, the generalization of the classic filters to multidimensional configurations arises. A possible solution consists in keeping the multidimensional structure and in extending the classic filters with multilinear algebra. Using the low-rank structure of the clutter, we propose in this paper a new low-rank tensor STAP filter based on a generalization of the Higher Order Singular Value Decomposition. HOSVD) in order to use at the same time the simple. for example time, spatial, polarimetric, ...) and the combined information. for example spatio-temporal). Results are shown for two cases : classic 2D STAP and 3D polarimetric STAP. In the classic case, vector and tensor filters are equivalent. In the polarimetric case, we show the enhancement of the tensor filter.

Spread-spectrum signaling offers robust communication over the multipath underwater acoustic channel, while at the same time allows multiple users to simultaneously occupy the entire continuum of the device-accessible bandwidth. However, limitations in temporal and spatial coherence of the underwater acoustic channel affect the maximum spreading code length and therefore the effective link data rate. In this work, we propose adaptive code length optimization toward high-rate spread-spectrum underwater acoustic communications. We first evaluate the bit error rate (BER) performance of the estimated minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) and auxiliary-vector (AV) linear filter receivers. We observe that the AV-filter based receiver significantly outperforms the estimated MVDR solution under limited data-record availability. We then investigate data rate trade-offs for optimized code lengths under pre-defined BER constraints in time-varying underwater acoustic channels. Simulation results verify that the proposed adaptive packetization scheme offers superior data rate performance under short data-record constraints imposed by the non-stationary nature of the underwater environment.
