For the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar, the angle resolution of the generated point cloud map (PCM) is limited by both the number of receiver antennas and the interference of multi-target environments. this paper proposes an improved scheme for high-resolution PCM generation based on a 77 GHz FMCW radar system. the scheme consists of a method to synthesize an equivalent virtual array based on the time-division multiplexing (TDM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique and an improved target detection algorithm based on multi-channel fusion. the results show that the proposed scheme could suppress the noise floor and improve the accuracy of target detection by 1.33 times compared to a conventional constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector in a multi-target environment. Moreover, by applying the proposed scheme, the angle resolution of the PCM generated by the radar system reaches to 1.3022 degrees.

A variety of algorithms have been developed to compute an approximate polynomial matrix eigenvalue decomposition (PEVD). As an extension of the ordinary EVD to polynomial matrices, the PEVD will generate paraunitary matrices that diagonalise a parahermitian matrix. While iterative PEVD algorithms that compute a decomposition in the time domain have received a great deal of focus and algorithmic improvements in recent years, there has been less research in the field of frequency-based PEVD algorithms. Such algorithms have shown promise for the decomposition of problems of finite order, but the state-of-the-art requires a priori knowledge of the length of the polynomial matrices required in the decomposition. this paper presents a novel frequency-based PEVD algorithm which can compute an accurate decomposition without requiring this information. Also presented is a new metric for measuring a function's smoothness on the unit circle, which is utilised within the algorithm to maximise eigenvector smoothness for a compact decomposition, such that the polynomial eigenvectors have low order. We demonstrate through the use of simulations that the algorithm can achieve superior levels of decomposition accuracy to a state-of-the-art frequency-based method.

this paper focuses on a noncoherent flat Rayleigh fading wireless communication system with a single transmitter antenna and N receiver antennas, i.e., a single-input-multiple-output (SIMO) system, in which the channel coefficients vary in every one time slot. For such a system, a fast noncoherent maximum likelihood (ML) detection algorithm and a corresponding closed form symbol error probability (SEP) formula are derived. In addition, the lower and upper bounds on SEP are established to quantitatively characterize how quickly SEP decays when N goes to infinity, with two important concepts, full receiver diversity gain and geometrical coding gain, being introduced, showing that any nonnegative pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) constellation enables full receiver diversity for the massive SIMO system. Furthermore, we find that an optimal received constellation that maximizes the geometrical coding gain is the geometrical constellation. Comprehensive computer simulations validate our theoretical analysis and demonstrate that our proposed optimal constellation attains significant performance gains over the currently available constellation design for the same massive SIMO system.

We consider the problem of sparse Fourier phase retrieval where the goal is to recover a sparse signal from the magnitudes of its Fourier transform. In our earlier work, it was shown that using a certain differential measurement model, it is possible to perform sparse Fourier phase retrieval with near-minimal sample complexity. Such measurements are realizable using interferometric imaging techniques and can remove the ambiguities inherent in Fourier phase retrieval in the noiseless setting. However, in presence of noise, such a differential measurement model can potentially lead to noise amplification and degrade the performance as sparsity increases. To address this issue, we propose to use a reweighted l(1) minimization algorithm in conjunction with our differential measurement model. Reweighted l(1) minimization has been successfully adopted in compressed sensing where it shows good performance in presence of large sparsity. We demonstrate a sparse phase retrieval algorithm based on reweighted l(1) minimization which shows superior performance in low signal to Noise ratio (SNR) and high sparsity regime.(1)

In the Wi-Fi network standards, channel state information (CSI) in ieee 802.11n and compressed beamforming report (CBR) in ieee 802.11ac and ax are utilized for highspeed and reliable wireless communications. Given that the CSI can accurately mirror physical changes in the wireless channel, CSI is also widely used for several sensing purposes. In recent years, CBR, the compressed form of CSI, is also used to realize wireless sensing by using ieee 802.11ac-compatible wireless devices. Many studies on CSI-based sensing and CBR-based sensing rely on experimental measurements to demonstrate their feasibility, but the performance gap between the CSI-based and CBR-based sensing is not well discussed. In addition, the effect of the time-varying phase offset on the sensing performance is also still unclear. In this paper, we set up a simulation environment and clarify the feasibility of CBR-based sensing by dealing with practical sensing tasks with CBR. Our simulations find that CBRbased sensing with frequency analysis achieves high accuracy comparable to CSI-based sensing, whereas the time series data is considerably distorted due to bit quantization, and that existing sensing methods relying on the nature of CSI are unsuitable for CBR.

Early detection of fall risk in homes and assisted living facilities is essential in preventing debilitating injuries and improving the quality of life of older adults. Several studies have found increased gait variability among community-living older adults with a history of falls. Quantitative 3D gait analysis in laboratories equipped with motion capture devices can be used to record and extract stride-to-stride gait fluctuations that are indicative of fall risk. Such facilities are very expensive, may not be easily accessible for aging and rural communities. Wearable sensors are a cheaper alternative to observe gait in natural settings;however, it can suffer from drift or other inaccuracies. RF sensors can be a game changer to reduce healthcare costs and disparities, improve quality of care, and facilitate aging-inplace by enabling frequent estimation of gait variability in natural settings. In particular, multi-channel frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar can be used to characterize gait and detect gait abnormalities. In this paper, multi-channel FMCW radar is used to measure gait dynamics in terms of steptime variability. the accuracy of RF measurements is validated via comparison with gold standards, such as the Vicon motion capture camera system. Step-time variability was compared for both normal walking and walking during visual perturbations generated through the use of a virtual reality headset. the accuracy of RF measurement is evaluated for single and multiple channel processing. Our results demonstrate that multi-channel RF sensors can be an effective tool for gait variability assessment in natural, in-home settings.

Blind adaptive beamforming algorithms using cyclostationarity of signals have found numerous important applications in signal processing because they do not depend on any reference signal. However, these methods are based on the assumption that the cycle frequency of the desired signal is precisely known which may not be true in practice. In this paper, we propose three efficient robust schemes based on the conventional cyclic adaptive beamforming (CAB) algorithm to combat the mismatch in the cycle frequency. the performance of the proposed techniques is compared with that of existing blind cyclic beamforming approaches by computer simulations, the results of which demonstrate a marked improvement in the robustness against inexact knowledge of the cycle frequency.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a major auto-immune disease that is the leading cause of non-traumatic impairment of the central nervous system (CNS) in young adults. Successful treatment of MS patients depends on accurate tools for both the MS diagnosis and the disability progression. In current and upcoming studies the authors aim to explore the capabilities of applying a commercial electromyographic and inertial sensor (MYO Armband by thalmic Labs Inc.), coupled with a multichannel signal processing tool, to standard neurological examination of MS progression. In this pilot study we formulate a two-class "healthy control" - "having MS" classification problem. A dataset of electromyographic signals and inertial sensor measurements from 71 individuals (31 MS patients and 40 healthy controls) was acquired during standard neurological examination routine. Temporal and spectral features of the signals were extracted in order to train and validate a classification model. Finally, a Support Vector Machine classifier was obtained giving AUROC = 0.94, 95% CI = [0.88, 0.99]. We propose a set of signal descriptors that correlate with objective components of the neurological examination. the proposed signal acquisition and processing technique, being easy to integrate into the traditional neurological exam, may have high potential for aiding in quantifying MS progression.

We analyze a binary hypothesis testing problem built on a wireless sensor network (WSN). Using Large Deviation theory (LDT), we compute the probability error exponents of a distributed scheme for detecting a correlated circularly-symmetric complex Gaussian process under the Neyman-Pearson framework. Using an analog scheme, the sensors transmit scaled versions of their measurements several times through a multiple access channel (MAC) to reach the fusion center (FC), whose task is to decide whether the process is present or not. In the analysis, we consider the energy constraint on each node transmission. We show that the proposed distributed scheme requires relatively few MAC channel uses to achieve the centralized error exponents when detecting correlated Gaussian processes. © 2014 ieee.

In this paper, we determine linear block precoders which asymptotically minimize the bit error rate (BER) of block-based communication systems employing minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization and threshold detection. the problem is solved by a two-stage optimization procedure in which a lower bound on the BER over its convex region is first minimized, followed by showing that this lower bound is actually achieved by the solution obtained in the first stage. Simulation results show that at moderate-to-high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), the SNR gain for the proposed design over the standard MMSE precoder, and several other conventional systems such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and discrete multitone (DMT) modulation can be several decibels (dB).
