this paper develops the theory of a MEMS nonplanar intrinsically beamforming ultrasonic sensor microarray. the microarray exploits the geometrical properties of a doubly ruled surface to realize a constant beamwidth broadband directional sensitivity without microelectronic signal processing as required by conventional acoustic beamformers. the 1000 × 1000 μm 2 array consists of 25 (5 × 5) capacitive type ultrasonic sensors and can provide a constant beamwidth broadband beamforming in the 1.70 -3.00 MHz frequency range. the tiered geometry has an out-of-plane angle of ± 10 degrees which translates into a 20 degree wide constant beamwidth broadband beam. the developed theory has been verified by extensive analytical and 3-D FEA simulations using IntelliSuite™ MEMS design tools. the device has excellent potential to be used in automotive collision avoidance applications. © 2006 ieee.

Optimizing a communication of a Q-antenna Access Point (AP) with K single antenna terminals is not straightforward. Since a global optimization might not be solvable in real time, the AP has several alternatives involving both the physical layer, e.g. beamforming and power/bit allocation, and the DLC, such as scheduling. the purpose of this paper is twofold. First, for K &le Q we compare traditional bit allocation strategies with a novel modified approach, especially in terms of fairness. Second, we focus on the combinatorial problem that arises when K > Q, and propose several alternatives for the scheduling of the users into groups, which is done together with the bit allocation. Simulations show that better performance is obtained at the expense of complexity. ©2004 ieee.

Motivated by application of widely-linear signal processing techniques in recursive Bayesian estimation, the paper proposes a novel widely-linear Gaussian sum filter (WL/GSF) for non-linear state estimation problems. Although the literature on non-linear state estimation using Gaussian sum filters is rich, its widely-linear counterpart which incorporates the full second-order statistics of the system and can potentially cope with non-Gaussian/non-circular measurements, have not yet been investigated in the literature. the paper addresses this gap. the WL/GSF resolves the computational burden of the Gaussian sum approach by incorporating a collapsing step. the number of components in the WL/GSF is controlled adaptively at each step utilizing a Bayesian learning technique to collapse, in an intelligent way, the resulting non-Gaussian sum mixture to an equivalent Gaussian term. Simulation results provided as proof of concepts and show that the proposed WL/GSF algorithm outperforms its counterparts in non-linear filtering problems with non-circular and non-Gaussian observations. © 2016 ieee.

In this paper, non standard deterministic parameters estimation is considered, i.e. the situation where the probability density function (p.d.f.) parameterized by unknown deterministic parameters results from the marginalization of a joint p.d.f. depending on additional random variables. Unfortunately, in the general case, this marginalization is mathematically intractable, which prevents from using the known deterministic lower bounds on the mean-squared-error (MSE). However an embedding mechanism allows to transpose all the known lowers bounds into modified lower bounds fitted with non-standard deterministic estimation, encompassing the modified Cramér-Rao / Bhattacharyya bounds and hybrid lower bounds. © 2016 ieee.

A Genetic Algorithm and Spectral Angle Constraint (GA-SAC) abundance estimation method is presented to improve the accuracy of abundance maps affected by illumination effects and sensor noise. As an improved version of the Spectral Angle Constraint (SAC), the GA-SAC was compared against several existing techniques. Preliminary results showed advantages of the proposed GA-SAC method from tests involving a simulated hyperspectral data set as well as for mapping mineral abundances using AVIRIS data over Cuprite, Nevada.

We show that recent robust adaptive beamformers, based on reconstructing either the noise-plus-interference or the data covariance matrices, are sensitive to the noise-plusinterference structure and degrade in the typical case when interferer steering vector mismatch exists, often performing much worse than common diagonally loaded sample covariance matrix based approaches, even when signal-of-interest steering vector mismatch is absent.

this paper presents a Bayesian approach for tracking the times-of-arrival (TOAs) of multiple wideband moving targets using a linear, passive sensor array, for use in smart antenna wireless applications. A novel form of posterior distribution describing the parameters of the received signal is developed. the nuisance parmeters (source amplitudes and variances) Of this distribution are integrated Out to form a more comoutationallv efficient estimator. the desired parameters are then tracked using parricle filtering techniques. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of this method. © 2003 ieee.

Wireless sensor networks are composed by a high number of very simple nodes. A paradigm for the nodes transceiver technology is to be energy aware and cost conscious. In this paper we consider a nonlinear transceiver structure which is a key technology for low-cost and power efficient network nodes. We use a phase detection receiver with a branch dependent metric which benefits from the knowledge of the channel fading coefficients. therefore we introduce a method to estimate the complex coefficients based on samples of the phase detector output. Since most routing concepts for sensor networks envisage multi-path routing with simple forwarding strategies (e.g. flooding), it is not far from that to make use of path diversity techniques in order to improve the network reliability. We show that remarkable diversity. gains can be achieved also with the nonlinear receiver structure. By means of simulations we examine path diversity techniques for 2PSK, 4PSK and SPSK modulation where we make use of common transmit diversity schemes. For 2PSK we propose a slight modification of the Alamouti scheme [1] to improve the performance.

Detection oriented UWB wireless sensor node places several stringent requirements on compatibility, power consumption and implementation cost. the compatibility requirements mandate the digital realization by using high speed analog-to-digital converter (ADC). However, the need of full resolution, extremely high speed ADC contradict to the application demand of low cost and power consumption. Finite-resolution sampling receiver is a practically appealing approach to relax the demand of high-rate ADC. To demonstrate the theoretical feasibility of low-bit sampling technique in target detection, the quantization based detection algorithm is elaborated. the performance characteristics from theoretical values and simulation results are presented for different sampling resolutions;detailed analysis of setting the optimal quantization step are also included. All these results provide useful guidelines for using low-complexity finite-resolution technique in UWB target detection.

Moving Target Indicators (MTI) are airborne radar systems designed to detect and track moving vehicles or aircrafts. In this paper, we address the problem of detecting hazardous collision targets to avoid them. One of the best known solutions to solve this problem is given by the so-called Space-Time Adaptive processing (STAP) algorithms which optimally filter the target signal from interference and noise exploiting the specific relationship between Direction Of Arrival (DOA) and Doppler for the ground clutter. However, these algorithms require an antenna array and multiple reception channels that increase cost and complexity. the authors propose an alternative solution using a single antenna only. In addition to the standard Doppler shift related to the radial speed, the orthoradial speed of any target can be estimated if using a long integration time. Dangerous targets and ground clutter have different signatures in the radial-orthoradial velocity plane. An optimal detector is then proposed based on the oblique projection onto the signal subspace orthogonal to the clutter subspace. the theoretical performances of this detector are derived and a realistic radar scene simulation shows the benefits of this new MTI detector. © 2011 ieee.
