this paper addresses the problem of joint time-delay and frequency synchronization in the CDMA receiver STAR. We observe that its space/time structural approach enables us to decouple time and frequency offsets. We thus introduce a new procedure based on space/time separation that implements a simple linear regression approach for both time-delay and frequency synchronization. We analyze the performance of this procedure in an unknown time-varying channel with multipath and carrier offset. Simulations show that the modified STAR provides significant performance gain over its previous version. the link-level gain is more than 3 dB for BPSK (128 kb/s) when the frequency offset equals 0.1 ppm (i.e., 200 Hz). this gain increases at higher frequency offsets and small-constellation modulations.

the concept of an Ultra Wideband (UWB) Monopulse Microwave Radar System for detection and location of breast cancer is described. the system uses a two-element Tapered Slot Antenna (TSA) array accompanied by a UWB 180 degrees hybrid which scans the breast. When the breast tissue features symmetry with respect to the array axis and the hybrid enables the 180 degrees out phase feeding operation, the array automatically eliminates background while extracting information about an off axis target. the data obtained from the scan is post-processed using a novel imaging algorithm to locate the target. the design of the required 2-element UWB array antenna and the 180 degrees hybrid is presented. the validity of the proposed breast cancer detection method is demonstrated in an example of a simple breast phantom formed by a cylindrical plastic container filled with a vegetable oil and small cylindrical targets.

Channel state information (CSI) is required at the receiver side of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems for decoding space-time codes. In this paper, new semiblind techniques are developed to jointly estimate the receiver CSI of multiple multiantenna transmitters that use orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBCs). the proposed techniques are based on the extension of the concepts of the popular Capon and MUSIC spectral estimators to the problem of multiuser channel estimation. Our methods blindly estimate the subspace that contains the user channel matrices, and then use only a few training symbol blocks to extract the user CSI from this subspace. It is demonstrated that, in addition to improving the bandwidth efficiency, the proposed techniques offer better channel estimation accuracy as compared withthe standard (nonblind) least-squares (LS) channel estimation method. Moreover, it is shown that using the proposed Capon- and MUSIC-based semiblind channel estimators along withthe coherent maximum-likelihood (ML) or the minimum-variance (MV) multiuser MIMO receivers results in a substantially better performance as compared withthe case when the standard LS channel estimates are used.

this paper presents a Bayesian approach for tracking the directions-of-arrival (DOAs) of multiple wideband moving targets using a linear, passive sensorarray, for use in smart antenna wireless applications, for example. A novel form of posterior distribution describing the parameters of the received signal is developed. the nuisance parameters (source amplitudes and variances) of this distribution are integrated out to form a more computationally efficient estimator. the desired parameters are then tracked using particle filtering techniques. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of this method.
