this paper presents a novel technique of allocating optimized power to wireless sensor nodes in a nonlinear measurement model. We consider the problem of distributed estimation of a random vector-valued parameter in an energy-constrained sensor network. Noise-corrupted local nonlinear observations are transmitted by spatially distributed sensor nodes towards fusion center where estimation of the vector parameter is carried out. In order to guarantee reliable communication, we minimize mean square error of this estimate subject to a constraint on total power consumed by the network. this optimization problem is then recast into a semi-definite program (SDP) which guarantees globally optimized values of the required power gains at sensor nodes. Estimation performance of this novel technique is demonstrated through examples of nonlinear models. Furthermore, for linear models the proposed strategy provides better performance when compared with the previous sub-optimial techniques.

Recently, the sparse overcomplete signal representations have been introduced to solve the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation problem by sensor array. However, it still has high computational complexity, and as the dictionary, i.e. a collection of possible direction response vectors, is required to be "overcomplete", it has to cover all the possible DOAs both of the interesting signals and uninteresting interferences to get the signal DOA estimation. this not only takes more program waiting time, but also makes the results unstable when the arrival angles of interferences are varying rapidly. In this paper, with the extension of the sparse overcomplete representation method (M-SBL) due to D. P. Wipf and B. D. Rao in beamspace bearing estimation, the beamspace M-SBL (BM-SBL) method is proposed. Since its dictionary contains only the possible DOAs of interest and taking advantages of beamspace conversion, the proposed method takes much less computational cost. On the other hand, simulation results show that the BM-SBL outperforms its element space counterpart M-SBL in both resolution and accuracy.

We consider the problem of target localization in MIMO radar with arbitrary planar arrays. A method for mapping a two-dimensional (2D) arbitrary transmit array into a uniform rectangular array or an L-shaped array with uniform element displacement is developed. the uniform structure of the mapped array enables applying the computationally efficient 2D root-MUSIC algorithm for estimating the elevation and azimuth parameters of the targets. the transmit array interpolation is achieved by properly designing the mapping matrix via solving a minmax convex optimization problem. We show that there is a tradeoff between the mapping accuracy within a certain desired 2D spatial sector and the sidelobe levels. the performance of the root-MUSIC for the mapped transmit array is shown to achieve the performance of the root-MUSIC associated with a perfect uniform array of the same shape as the mapped one. Simulation examples are used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Single-sensor digital cameras capture imagery by covering the sensor surface with a color filter array (CFA) such that each sensor pixel only samples one of three primary color values. To render a full-color image, an interpolation process commonly referred to as CFA demosaicking is required to estimate the other two missing color values at each pixel. In this paper, we present a new and improved CFA demosaicking method for producing high quality color images from CFA samples. the proposed method consists of two successive steps: an interpolation step estimating the missing color values by exploiting spatial and spectral correlations among neighboring pixels in different directions, and a post-processing step suppressing noticeable demosaicking artifacts by using adaptive median filtering. the superiority of the proposed method is demonstrated by comparing it against other well-known or well-performed methods using a variety of test images. © 2003 ieee.

In this paper, a novel code identification algorithm based on a least squares reflector grid estimation technique for single delay-line-based surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor identification tags using pulse position coding is derived. the least squares estimation procedure considers all round-trip delay time information encoded on a single tag. Hence, the pulse position coding grid can be estimated with higher accuracy compared with the standard grid estimation technique, which uses only framing reflectors for grid calculation. the need for framing reflectors is completely eliminated, and thus additional space for data on the tag is obtained. With a more accurate grid, the probability of correct identification increases. Ensuring a large data capacity on the SAW tag, the newly derived estimator also works well with fine pulse position coding grids, for which common grid estimators fail, in particular, in low signal-to-noise ratio scenarios.

In this paper, we consider a multiuser downlink OFDM system having a single transmitting antenna and a single receiving antenna for which the channel state information (CSI) are known to both the transmitter and the receivers. For such a system, we design optimal precoders that minimize the average bit error rate (BER) subject to a total power constraint when minimum mean square error (MMSE) receivers are employed. this problem is solved by a two-stage optimization procedure in which a lower bound on the BER is first minimized, followed by showing that this lower bound is actually achieved by the solution obtained in the first stage. In the first stage, we can transform the formulation of the original non-convex optimization problem into a convex one by optimally allocating the subcarriers based on the largest subchannel gain. Furthermore, an alternative efficient power loading method is proposed here in order to reduce the computation complexity. Simulation results show that for moderate to high SNR, our design achieves a gain of several dBs over several other design methods, including currently available precoder design based on MMSE. ©2004 ieee.

We investigate influence on DOA estimation with the circular dipole array antenna in a borehole (CAB), when the TE plane wave incident on the CAB. According to calculation of electromagnetic flelds of the TE plane wave, vertical component of the electric field is excited by the cylindrical layers around the antenna, and these phenomena are called mode conversion in this paper. this increases error of DOA estimation, if we assume that the TM wave is incident on the CAB like in [4] during the array signal processing. We introduce the index alpha(t) in order to represent quantity of component excited by the mode conversion. According to the experiment in air and field experiments, we confirmed that the mode conversion occurs, and this would influence DOA estimation with the CAB.

In this paper we discuss the possibility of performing a sleep evaluation from the heart rate variability (HRV) and respiratory signals. this is particularly useful for non standard sleep measurements based on wearable devices or special sensors inserted in the bed. the HRV and the respiration signals were analysed in the frequency domain and the statistics on the spectral and cross-spectral parameters put into evidence the possibility of a sleep evaluation on their basis instead of the classical polysomnography in a sleep laboratory. Additional information can be achieved from the number of microarousals recognized in correspondence of typical modifications in the HRV signal.

Fast and accurate distance measurement is crucial for target tracking and node localization in Wireless sensor Networks. For short-range Underwater Acoustic sensor Networks (UASNs), received signal strength (RSS) can give distance between acoustic devices. An extensive study on the application of the Lambert W function over RSS for distance estimation in short-range UASNs shows that it can be done accurately in as few as 4 iterations. the method is mathematically derived in this paper and the accuracy verified with Matlab simulation.
