A signalprocessing algorithm for estimating the direction of arrival of a harmonic signal using only a single sensor is proposed. the method is based on the recently invented architecture called CAROUSEL, which makes use of the Doppler effect caused by observing signals using the sensor in a circular motion. the proposed method estimates the direction of arrival from the amount of phase shift of a harmonic component caused by the Doppler effect. Simulation using various harmonic signals including synthesised speech phonemes prove the proposed algorithm is able to accurately estimate the direction of arrival of the harmonic signals.

In this paper, the estimation of the regularization parameter of the on-line Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) with minimum volume constraint on sources is addressed. Adding a volume constraint in the model is important to ensure uniqueness of the solution and good data representation. However, the effectiveness of this approach is hampered by the optimal determination of the strength of minimum volume term. To solve this problem, we formulate it as a bi-objective optimization problem and three Minimum Distance Criterion (MDC) strategies are proposed and evaluated. the three strategies yield similar results but one of them in particular yields an interesting tradeoff between accuracy and computation time.

Sparse sensorarrays can achieve significantly more degrees of freedom than the number of elements by leveraging the co-array, a virtual structure that arises from the far field narrowband signal model. Although several sparse array configurations have been developed for passive sensing tasks, less attention has been paid to arrays suitable for active sensing. this paper presents a novel active sparse linear array, called the Interleaved Wichmann array (IWA). the IWA only has a few closely spaced elements, which may make it more robust to mutual coupling effects. Closed-form expressions are provided for the key properties of the IWA. the parameters maximizing the array aperture for a given even number of elements are also found. the near field wideband performance of the array is demonstrated numerically in a coherent imaging scenario.

Sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) has been used to obtain source direction-of-arrivals (DoAs) from uniform linear array (ULA) data. the maximum number of sources that can be resolved using a ULA is limited by the number of sensors in the array. It is known that sparse linear arrays such as co-prime and nested arrays can resolve more sources than the number of sensors. In this paper we demonstrate this using SBL. A broadband beamspace adaptive beamforming structure for rectangular arrays is proposed. A set of frequency invariant beams are formed pointing to different directions and only one weight is attached to each of the beam outputs. Due to the greatly reduced number of adaptive weights, the system can achieve a much faster convergence speed. Compared to the existing broadband beamspace adaptive methods, the advantage of the proposed method is that there is no temporal processing of the received sensorsignals, such as the tapped delay-lines or IIR/FIR filters. therefore it is a system employing spatial-only information.
