the emergence of software defined radio (SDR) aims to increase flexibility as well as reduce cost, size, weight and power (SWAP) inherent in traditional hardware radios. this paper is concerned with addressing issues associated with the formation of an array system from multiple SDR boards where each has an independent local oscillators (LO) in a multi-antenna system using representative examples such as localization and array shape estimation. In particular, practical experimental results are initially presented for estimating the unknown location of a single source using an SDR array of known array geometry. Furthermore, in the case that the SDR array geometry is unknown, a novel array shape estimation algorithm is proposed. the proposed algorithm estimates the antenna locations without requiring any external sources. this is achieved by allowing the array elements operate as transceivers.

We consider a decentralized detection problem in a power-constrained wireless sensor networks (WSNs), in which a number of sensor nodes collaborate to detect the presence of a deterministic vector signal. the signal to be detected is assumed known a priori. Each sensor conducts a local linear processing to convert its observations into one or multiple messages. the messages are conveyed to the fusion center (FC) by an uncoded amplify-and-forward scheme, where a global decision is made. Given a total network transmit power constraint, we investigate the optimal linear processing strategy for each sensor. Our study finds that the optimal linear precoder has the form of a matched filter. Depending on the channel characteristics, one or multiple versions of the filtered/compressed message should be reported to the FC.

In this paper, we study the impact of outdated channel state information (CSI) on a cooperative system based on opportunistic relay selection (ORS). the study is carried out by obtaining an analytical expression for the outage probability, defined as the probability that the instantaneous mutual information is lower than a target rate. Besides, we propose the optimal power allocation aimed at minimizing the outage probability when the available CSI is subject to impairments. As shown in the paper, the proposed strategy provides significant gains when compared with uniform power allocation.

the problem of interest is the determination of the location of a licensed or unlicensed source of radio transmission from air. Accordingly, an experiment was conducted in 2008 involving a two-dimensional antenna array mounted on a Zeppelin NT airship. this paper gives an overview of the experiment and some results obtained to date by post-processing of the collected data. A combination of angles of arrival estimation of radio sources and the proposed attitude correction technique gives an accurate location estimation of a radio source located in an urban area. We also verified the feasibility of localization system using on-board array antennas through the experiment.

We study channel-aware decision fusion over a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel in the largearray regime at the decision-fusion center (DFC). Inhomogeneous large-scale fading between the sensors and the DFC is consider in addition to the small-scale fading, and pilot-based channel estimation is performed at the DFC. Linear processing techniques are analyzed in order to design low-complexity alternatives to the optimum log-likelihood ratio test (LLRT). Performance evaluation based on Monte Carlo simulations are presented.

the conventional robust beamformers based on worst-case performance optimization suffer from difficulty in selecting an appropriate size of the uncertainty set. Besides, their performances degrade dramatically if large steering vector mismatch occurs. In this paper, we propose a semidefinite programming (SDP) based robust beamformer using multiple small uncertainty sets where these sets are used to describe the desired steering vector in the possible large uncertainty region. To solve the nonconvex original problem, we relax the constraints and then recast it in high dimension. By using multiple constraints relaxation, we obtain the optimal solution of the beamformer. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method offers a significant performance improvement in case of large steering vector mismatch.

the paper describes the design, development and testing of an automated, programmable pressure measurement system based on low-cost sensors. To improve the accuracy of the measure, multiple sensors with different pressure range are used. A micro-controller drives the automatic switching logic and activates the suitable sensor for the measured pressure range. A practical application is described, where the device measures the velocity profile at the inlet of a micro-jetengine and computes the instantaneous inlet mass-flow rate.

this paper develops a closed-form solution that improves the projection matrix method for time of arrival (TOA) source localization in the presence of sensor position inaccuracy. the projection approach is attractive because it does not require the use of an extra variable as in the traditional closed-form solution. Compared with the previous projection method, the proposed algorithm offers a closed-form solution and at the same time attains the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) performance for Gaussian noise over the small noise region. the performance of the proposed method is validated by simulations.

In this paper, we consider distributed estimation of discrete-time, LTI state-spaces, restricted to Hermitian (or symmetric) system matrices. We assume that the underlying system is monitored by a group of agents, sparsely connected via an undirected communication graph, and no agent may possess enough measurements (in its neighborhood) to estimate the entire state-vector. In this context, we analyze an estimation protocol that only requires a single design parameter: a scalar-gain, α ∈ R. We design this scalar-gain, α, with the help of some eigenvalue (Weyl's) inequalities and derive the conditions under which a scalar-gain is sufficient to estimate the underlying system with bounded estimation error.

Mechanical cardiac activity may be monitored with phonocardiographic (PCG) signals giving access to cardiac sounds. However, many noises interfere with cardiac information in raw signals and denoising such signals is necessary before interpretation. Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) is of interest for time-frequency representations to separate noise and signal components. In this paper, to exploit the quasi-periodicity of the PCG, a quasi-periodic NMF (QP-NMF), based on multiplicative updates derived from a Majoration-Minimization algorithm, is proposed to decompose the PCG spectrograms. Numerical simulations show the good behavior of the proposed method to separate quasi-periodic components from the others. Finally, applied on real noisy PCG signals, QP-NMF shows its interest compared to an unsupervised NMF to denoise PCG signals.
