Several methods have been developed which allow the estimation of the location of an existing source with considerable accuracy in the absence of multipaths. However, if, in addition to the Line-of-Sight (LOS) path, non-LOS (NLOS) paths are also present, then all existing localisation algorithms dramatically fail to estimate the location of the source. In this paper, a passive array processing algorithm is proposed, which, if used prior to a localisation approach, suppresses all the multipath contributions in the received signal except for that of the LOS path. the performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated through computer simulation studies.

Direction of arrival (DOA) estimation from array observations in a noisy environment is discussed. the source amplitudes are assumed to be correlated zero-mean complex Gaussian distributed with unknown covariance matrix. the DOAs and covariance parameters of plane waves are estimated from multi-snapshot sensor array data using sparse Bayesian learning (SBL). the performance of SBL is evaluated in terms of the fidelity of the reconstructed coherency matrix of the estimated plane waves.

Many real world applications of target tracking and state estimation are non-linear filtering problems and can therefore not be solved by closed-form analytical solutions. In the recent past, tensor based approaches have become increasingly popular due to very effective decomposition algorithms, which allow the representation of discretized, high-dimensional data in compressed form. In this paper, a solution of the prediction step for a Bayesian filter is proposed, where the probability density function (pdf) is approximated by a tensor in Hierarchical Tucker Decomposition. It is shown, that the computation of the predicted pdf is about five times faster than the previously proposed Canonical Polyadic Decomposition format.

this paper considers the problem of detecting a multichannel signal in the presence of spatially and temporally colored disturbance. A parametric generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) is developed by modeling the disturbance as a multichannel autoregressive (AR) process. Maximum likelihood (ML) parameter estimation underlying the parametric GLRT is examined. It is shown that the ML estimator for the alternative hypothesis is nonlinear and there exists no closed-form expression. To address this issue, an asymptotic ML (AML) estimator is presented, which yields asymptotically optimum parameter estimates at reduced complexity. the performance of the parametric GLRT is studied by considering challenging cases with limited or no training signals for parameter estimation. Such cases (especially when training is unavailable) are of great interest in detecting signals in heterogeneous, fast changing, or dense-target environments, but generally cannot be handled by most existing multichannel detectors which rely more heavily on training at an adequate level. Compared with the recently introduced parametric adaptive matched filter (PAMF) and parametric Rao detectors, the parametric GLRT achieves higher data efficiency, offering improved detection performance in general.

Sparse sensor arrays can achieve significantly more degrees of freedom than the number of elements by leveraging the co-array, a virtual structure that arises from the far field narrowband signal model. Although several sparse array configurations have been developed for passive sensing tasks, less attention has been paid to arrays suitable for active sensing. this paper presents a novel active sparse linear array, called the Interleaved Wichmann array (IWA). the IWA only has a few closely spaced elements, which may make it more robust to mutual coupling effects. Closed-form expressions are provided for the key properties of the IWA. the parameters maximizing the array aperture for a given even number of elements are also found. the near field wideband performance of the array is demonstrated numerically in a coherent imaging scenario.

Many applications in array processing require a high resolution beamforming method. For example, Spatial Division Multiple Access (SDMA) has been proposed to achieve higher system capacity in wireless systems. Implicit in SDMA is the ability to adaptively generate narrow antenna beam patterns, which ensures the physical separation between users and minimizes multiple user interference. However, antenna theory requires large antenna apertures to generate narrow beam patterns. this paper discusses an adaptive algorithm for extrapolating measurements from a small antenna array to a much larger virtual array. the technique utilizes linear prediction (LP) methods to perform the extrapolation. A Least Mean Square (LMS) based algorithm was used to estimate the LP coefficients. Since the algorithm is linear, it serves both as a direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimator and a matched filter for retrieving the transmitted signal. Other popular high-resolution algorithms such as MUSIC are inherently nonlinear and thus cannot be used on their own for retrieving signal information. the performance of this algorithm is studied with respect to interference suppression, noise and spatial resolution. It is shown that the IIR filter representing the LP process has poles corresponding to the DoA of the signal. the resulting LP coefficients can eliminate the interference between signals from different transmitters. However, no improvement in noise performance is seen because the receiver noise couples into the extrapolation process when two transmitters are closely located. the extrapolation algorithm is compared with the LCMV algorithm and found to produce similar results.

this paper describes methods for broadening the beam of a phased array antenna using phase-only element weights. this type of broadening can be valuable for improving the search occupancy and/or reducing the search frame time for large phased arrays, when transmit beam broadening is combined with multiple simultaneous receive beams. Phase-only broadening is required for typical solid-state (active phased) arrays because control of the transmit amplitude at each element is not practical. A notable result is that there is a relationship between the amount of beam broadening and the efficiency (directivity) of the resulting beam. In particular it is shown that broadening less than similar to 2.5:1 results in reduced beam efficiency for both linear and circular arrays, while a broadening of greater than similar to 2.5:1 results in improved beam efficiency, and that, therefore, certain broadening configurations will be preferable to the radar designer (e.g. 4:1 in one plane rather than 2:1 in two planes, due to a large difference in efficiency). the algorithms used to achieve the broadening patterns presented here are based on a combination of homotopy from known optimality with a stochastic gradient descent approach using a carefully constructed one parameter family of penalty functions.

Previous work has presented an information-theoretic sensor management framework for the detection of static targets. this framework is based on the expected discrimination gain maximization technique of Kastella. the sensor manager searches for N targets within a grid of cells using M sensors, which may be thought of as a reconfigurable sensor array. sensor probabilities of detection and false alarm are used in the mathematical structure of the sensor manager, and these probabilities have previously been assumed to be certain. Realistic problems, however, will inevitably involve uncertainty. this paper introduces uncertain sensor P-d and P-f values into the mathematical framework and allows for their incorporation into the sequential structure of the sensor manager. the performance of the presented sensor management technique is then compared to direct search, where the sensors sweep through the grid in a predefined sampling pattern. the sensor manager is found to be superior to direct search when the uncertainty present in the problem is properly modeled. When uncertainty is present but not modeled, the performance of the sensor manager is severely degraded. this result indicates that uncertainty modeling will be important and necessary for the successful application of the presented sensor manager to real-world problems. Additional simulations examine the robustness of the sensor manager to errors in the assumed densities for P-d and P-f, and the performance of the sensor manager is found to remain strong even when the assumed P-d and P-f densities differ from the true densities.

PATENT PENDING. Time-of-arrival (TOA) localization is tightly coupled with sensor time synchronization. Synchronization can be obtained by GPS, atomic clocks or message exchange protocols. All methods affect the energy sources and the synchronization protocols use valuable bandwidth. We present self-synchronized localization algorithms that rely exclusively on TOA measurements performed by the sensor network on passing sources rendering it completely passive. Localization performance is close to that provided by a perfectly synchronized network. Such algorithms can also be used for sensor network synchronization and communication networks in general.

the interplay between signal processing and wireless networking plays a crucial role in sensor networks deployed for detection and estimation applications. In this paper, an opportunistic power assignment strategy for IR-UWB sensor networks is presented which is designed to optimize detection performance in terms of the global probability of error. the opportunistic power assignment strategy utilizes both the detection error probabilities of individual sensors as well as network topology information, leading to significant performance gains compared to uniform power assignment.
