In this paper, we develop a novel approach for joint channel estimation and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) detection for time-varying frequency-selective channels. First, we propose a sequential channel estimation (SCE) MCMC algorithm that combines an MCMC algorithm for data detection, and an adaptive least mean square (LMS) algorithm for channel tracking, in a sequential fashion. then we develop a stochastic expectation maximization (SEM) MCMC algorithm that takes advantage of both the MCMC approach and the EM algorithm to find jointly important samples of the transmitted data and channel impulse response (CIR). the proposed algorithms provide a low-complexity means to approximate the optimal maximum a posterior (MAP) detection in a statistical fashion and are applicable to channels with long memory. Excellent behavior of the proposed algorithms is presented using both synthetic channels and real data collected from actual underwater acoustic experiments.

Spectrum Sharing in Wireless Networks via QoS-Aware Secondary Multicast Beamforming

Secondary spectrum usage has the potential to considerably increase spectrum utilization. In this paper, quality-of-service (QoS)-aware spectrum underlay of a secondary multicast network is considered.. A multiantenna secondary access point (AP) is used for multicast (common information) transmission to a number of secondary single-antenna receivers. the idea is that beamforming can be used to steer power towards the secondary receivers while limiting sidelobes that cause interference to primary receivers. Various optimal formulations of beamforming are proposed, motivated by different "cohabitation" scenarios, including robust designs that are applicable with inaccurate or limited channel state information at the secondary AP. these formulations are NP-hard computational problems;yet it is shown how convex approximation-based multicast beamforming tools (originally developed without regard to primary interference constraints) can be adapted to work in a spectrum underlay context. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches and provide insights on the tradeoffs between different design criteria.

Recently, the sparse overcomplete signal representations have been introduced to solve the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation problem by sensor array. However, it still has high computational complexity, and as the dictionary, i.e. a collection of possible direction response vectors, is required to be "overcomplete", it has to cover all the possible DOAs both of the interesting signals and uninteresting interferences to get the signal DOA estimation. this not only takes more program waiting time, but also makes the results unstable when the arrival angles of interferences are varying rapidly. In this paper, with the extension of the sparse overcomplete representation method (M-SBL) due to D. P. Wipf and B. D. Rao in beamspace bearing estimation, the beamspace M-SBL (BM-SBL) method is proposed. Since its dictionary contains only the possible DOAs of interest and taking advantages of beamspace conversion, the proposed method takes much less computational cost. On the other hand, simulation results show that the BM-SBL outperforms its element space counterpart M-SBL in both resolution and accuracy.

Design considerations for an embedded wireless sensor network (WSN) for monitoring civil infrastructure are presented. Nodes capable of local signal processing mitigate the volume of data for wireless transmission. Dual battery and harvested solar power sources provide the energy for the added computation. A low-drop-out-regulator (LDO) recharger with high-temperature cutoff is key to the system being maintenance free over its expected two year lifetime in a hot desert climate. ©2009 ieee.

Simulations of artificial vision suggest that thousands of electrodes may be required to restore vision for ones with diseases of the outer retina. With the development of MEMS fabrication process for the stimulation electrode array, extraocular image processing is becoming more and more important for the retinal prosthesis systems. A Digital signal Processor (DSP) based extraocular image processing system (EIPS) for a retinal prosthesis has been developed in this paper. the system mainly consists of a CMOS image sensor and a DSP processing system, which provides the capability of implmenting the real-time image processing with low power consumption. Furthermore, this system offers the flexibility of realizing various image processing algorithms with different specification requirements on the DSP by programming, such as different frame rate, resolution and throughput data rate. the related image processing algorithms include the image resizing, color erasing, edge enhancement and edge detection. Finally, the speed of different DSPs in the market has been evaluated and compared for achieving better performance.

this paper presents a comparative study of Field Programmable Gate array (FPGA) implementation of standard and truncated multipliers using Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL). Truncated multiplier is a good candidate for digital signal processing (DSP) applications such as finite impulse response (FIR) and discrete cosine transform (DCT) etc. Significant reduction in FPGA resources, delay, and power can be achieved using truncated multipliers instead of standard parallel multipliers when the full precision of the standard multiplier is not required. the power and area of truncated 6x6-bit multiplier shows significant improvement as compared to standard 6x6-bit multiplier. For Xilinx Spartan-3AN (XC3S700ANFGG484-5) FPGA device, truncated multiplier shows a reduction in power and area by 45% and 67% respectively as compared to standard multiplier. ©2009 ieee.

this paper presents a sensor array position calibration algorithm for determining the positions of individual microphones in a linear array automatically from time-difference of arrival measurements obtained from a mobile sounding source. the algorithm uses a nonlinear least squares method to determine the interspacing of microphones that are located along a fixed axis of a linear array. this method provides a means of establishing the positions of microphones for the purposes of acoustic localization and other beamforming applications, without the need to measure these distances by manual means. Simulations and some live experiments illustrate the method.
