We propose a MUSIC based array imaging method for ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) applications. We take the mode conversion phenomenon into account and develop a MUSIC-based imaging technique which exploits the additional information that is present in all propagating modes to the advantage of the imaging process-a problem not previously addressed in the context of NDT applications. Both the numerical simulations as well as data validation show that our proposed approach performs better than the traditional MUSIC based and delay-and-sum (DAS) based imaging algorithms in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) and also provides higher resolution and better side lobe suppression capabilities.

this paper considers the problem of detecting a multichannel signal in the presence of spatially and temporally colored disturbance. A parametric generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) is developed by modeling the disturbance as a multichannel autoregressive (AR) process. Maximum likelihood (ML) parameter estimation underlying the parametric GLRT is examined. It is shown that the ML estimator for the alternative hypothesis is nonlinear and there exists no closed-form expression. To address this issue, an asymptotic ML (AML) estimator is presented, which yields asymptotically optimum parameter estimates at reduced complexity. the performance of the parametric GLRT is studied by considering challenging cases with limited or no training signals for parameter estimation. Such cases (especially when training is unavailable) are of great interest in detecting signals in heterogeneous, fast changing, or dense-target environments, but generally cannot be handled by most existing multichannel detectors which rely more heavily on training at an adequate level. Compared with the recently introduced parametric adaptive matched filter (PAMF) and parametric Rao detectors, the parametric GLRT achieves higher data efficiency, offering improved detection performance in general.

Many applications in array processing require a high resolution beamforming method. For example, Spatial Division Multiple Access (SDMA) has been proposed to achieve higher system capacity in wireless systems. Implicit in SDMA is the ability to adaptively generate narrow antenna beam patterns, which ensures the physical separation between users and minimizes multiple user interference. However, antenna theory requires large antenna apertures to generate narrow beam patterns. this paper discusses an adaptive algorithm for extrapolating measurements from a small antenna array to a much larger virtual array. the technique utilizes linear prediction (LP) methods to perform the extrapolation. A Least Mean Square (LMS) based algorithm was used to estimate the LP coefficients. Since the algorithm is linear, it serves both as a direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimator and a matched filter for retrieving the transmitted signal. Other popular high-resolution algorithms such as MUSIC are inherently nonlinear and thus cannot be used on their own for retrieving signal information. the performance of this algorithm is studied with respect to interference suppression, noise and spatial resolution. It is shown that the IIR filter representing the LP process has poles corresponding to the DoA of the signal. the resulting LP coefficients can eliminate the interference between signals from different transmitters. However, no improvement in noise performance is seen because the receiver noise couples into the extrapolation process when two transmitters are closely located. the extrapolation algorithm is compared with the LCMV algorithm and found to produce similar results.

Wireless sensor networks have been applied successfully in real-time distributed and collaborative sensing. In these situations, each sensor is responsible for extracting pertinent information from the surrounding environment and transmitting it to other sensors and/or to the main processing station. this is done while operating under several constraints, such as low computational capabilities, limited arithmetic precision, and the need to conserve power. In this paper, we present a low-complexity voice activity detector and a gender classifier for implementation on the Crossbow sensor motes. In addition, a decision fusion algorithm that resides at the base station is also implemented. A series of experiments that characterize the performance of the algorithms under varying conditions and in different environments are presented and several of the challenges we faced in developing this real-time implementation are discussed.

By taking the third-order statistical information of processes into account, the bispectrum is a useful tool in digital signal processing and statistics. the paper proposes a nonparametric approach of estimating the bispectrum, using tapers designed to achieve maximal bifrequency concentration. Bispectra are functions of two frequencies plus their sum, so the optimum tapers are not products of Slepian sequences. the new tapers minintize the sixth-moment "energy" leakage in the estimate, and thus the new multiple window bispectrum estimator (MWBE) can be interpreted as minimizing the broad-band bias. Alternatively, the MWBE can be viewed as a solution of an integral inverse problem using an eigenfunction expansion. this approach can be extended to estimate higher-order polyspectra. Numerical simulations use moving average (MA) data with non-Gaussian white driving noise. Simulation results with small sample sizes show that this new MWBE is feasible and mean-squared error (MSE) optimal.

Polarized emissions from various astrophysical sources provide an additional means to infer the properties of the source. this information can be extracted by imaging the Stokes parameters characterizing these emissions, from the incomplete Fourier sampling measurements provided by the radio interferometer. To solve the corresponding ill-posed inverse problem, we recently proposed the Polarized SARA method which exploits the polarization constraint along with imposing an average sparsity prior for each of the Stokes parameters, encompassed in a reweighting approach. Motivated by the large amounts of data produced by the next-generation radio interferometers, in the current work, we propose a scalable version of this method, combined with an accelerating strategy. We showcase the performance of this improved method on a real dataset acquired by the Very Large array (VLA).

One of the fundamental problems for hybrid beamformer design in MIMO systems is that, in Singular-Value-Decomposition (SVD) based beamforming, the analog beamformer is limited to constant modulus. In order to solve this issue, an algorithm is proposed in this paper. Specifically, the parallel data streams are expressed mathematically, and then the math expression of the analog beamformer is achieved through maximizing the power of desired data streams while minimizing the power of interference. then, the digital part of the beamformer is calculated based on a channel equivalent process, i.e., considering the phase response vector of the derived analog beamformers as part of the channel observed by the digital beamformers. Simulations are performed on the proposed algorithm and compared to a recent state-of-the-art technique. the results show that the proposed one outperforms in terms of sphere of application (i.e., different antenna array sizes and channel sparsities).

this paper proposes an improved two-dimensional (2-D) Root MUSIC algorithm for non-circular sources. the proposed method has many advantages over conventional Root MUSIC algorithms. First, it requires no pair matching between the azimuth and elevation angle estimation, whereas conventional 2-D Root MUSIC algorithms require an exhaustive pair-matching search. Second, the proposed algorithm shows no estimation failure when the elevation angles are between 70 and 90 degrees, whereas the conventional 2-D Root MUSIC algorithms fail. third, the proposed algorithm can estimate the direction of arrival angles (DOAs) of coherent sources, whereas the conventional 2-D Root MUSIC algorithms cannot. Fourth, the algorithm does not require any forward/backward spatial smoothing, whereas the conventional 2-D MUSIC algorithms do. Hence, the proposed algorithm can reduce the computational load significantly and can be applied to faster real-time radar/sonar and commercial wireless systems. In addition to these advantages, the simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional Root MUSIC algorithms by a 7 dB gain in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to achieve the same root mean square error (RMSE) performance.
