Mobile satellite terminals especially with high-gain antenna require fast and accurate beam tracking algorithms for communication. the main topic of this paper is the extension of a tracking algorithm to mobile satellite communications, its implementation and performance. the presented considerations and simulation results concern low SNR condition and narrow antenna beam configuration as existing in satellite communications. the assumed satellite is geostationary. the work is presented in context of SANTANA-2 project, (Smart Antenna Terminal), founded and supported by the German DLR on behalf of BMBF. the realized terminal uses an antenna array in Ka-band and fully implements Digital BeamForming (DBF) to control the beam pointing direction and the antenna beam shape.

A rapid increase in popularity of smart devices equipped with acoustic sensors enables the design of speech enhancement methods for distributed setups. In this work, we present a distributed noise reduction scheme in which the time-frequency masks and spatial filters are estimated at the nodes based on the locally available microphone signals and the compressed signals received from other nodes, where each node transmits only a single signal. the proposed block processing facilitates online estimation of masks and distributed spatial filters in an interchanged fashion. the results of performed numerical experiments indicate that the proposed online distributed noise reduction scheme performs similarly to the centralized approach, in which signals of all microphones of the distributed arrays are available for joint processing, and it significantly outperforms the local approach in which only the local microphone signals are available for the estimation of masks and spatial filters.

Sound source localization systems typically measure differences in time-of-arrival between microphones in free field arrays. Using a different concept, we previously designed and built a localization system that mimics nature's solution of harnessing wave diffraction about the head while relying only on two sensors positioned antipodally. Departing from the biological constraint of two sensors, I recently showed that for broadband sources, a high acuity array could be designed with merely three microphones. Yet adding more microphones may further increase acuity and robustness. the localization algorithm we have developed uses pair-wise comparisons between microphones, the number of which increases quadratically with the number of microphones, N. In order to minimize calculations in time sensitive applications, choosing a subset of pairs may be important. I examine this issue here through simulations of a hexagonal array. thanks to the redundancy of spatial information contained in multiple microphone measurements, algorithms that are linear in N allow high acuity localization of broadband sources.

In this paper, the elitist resampling particle filter (ERPF) is introduced. the ERPF is an approach to combine generic particle filters, i.e., the SIS and SIR particle filter, based on an evolutionary selection of particles, which introduces a long-term memory to the selected group of the particles. thereby, the ERPF aims at fusing the advantages, e.g., robustness and computational efficiency, and mitigating the drawbacks of each filter, e.g., degeneracy and sample impoverishment. Two variants of the ERPF are presented in this paper: the discrete ERPF (DERPF) and the continuous ERPF (CERPF), which to the authors' knowledge represent new forms of particle filters. the two proposed hybrids are compared to the corresponding original filters using two well-established benchmark models to illustrate that the evolutionary combinations provide a better estimation accuracy and exhibit an increased robustness against outliers.

Voice based computing applications, such as phone communication and speech recognition, use microphone arrays to capture voice from a human speaker. In many environments of interest, however, sounds from other sources interfere with the speaker's voice, posing severe problems for subsequent processing. this paper describes a new framework for treating this problem, and presents and demonstrates a new algorithm for the cancellation of interfering sounds. Our framework combines techniques from statistical machine learning with ideas from speech and audio processing. An important feature involves training rich probabilistic models on data from different types of relevant sound sources. nose source models are then incorporated into a larger probabilistic model of the observed microphone data. Using that model we derive our algorithm, which is of the expectation-maximization type and infers from data the clean sound of separate individual sources. We report very good results on data recorded in different environments.

Position solutions provided by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) can be completely misled by structural interference or spoofing threats. An approach utilizing an antenna array is proposed in order to suppress spoofing attacks. the proposed method is based on the assumption that all spoofing signals are transmitted from a single point source. A spatial domain processing technique is proposed to extract the spoofing signal steering vector and consequently to discard the spoofing signals. this method is implemented before despreading and acquisition stage of a GNSS receiver. Hence, it does not impose a heavy computational load on the receiver operational process since it does not require any extensive search in the code and Doppler domains to separately despread individual authentic and spoofing signals. Moreover, the proposed method does not require any antenna array calibration process. this pre-despreading interference mitigation technique is further extended to maximize signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of each individual authentic GNSS signal. Simulation results show that the proposed method effectively countermeasures spoofing attacks for a wide range of received spoofing power.

We propose a weighted KNN Epipolar Geometry-based method for vision-based indoor localization using cellphone cameras. the proposed method is applicable for fine localization whenever a pose-tagged (position + rotation matrix) image database is available rather than just Geo-tagged one. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first that Epipolar geometry has been utilized for fine localization in indoor applications using smartphone images. We compare the performance of our method with two outstanding literature works. It will be also demonstrated that the proposed method can extrapolate the location of queries located outside of the database location set, as well as compensate for the small databases, where database location set is sparse as two additional new features of this method.

this paper describes a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) generalization of space-time adaptive processing (STAP) to mitigate radar clutter subject to multipath propagation between transmit and receive arrays. Multipath clutter can occur when surface returns are multiply scattered, causing significant Doppler frequency and wavenumber spreads. In the worst case, multipath propagation may cause Doppler spread clutter to return via the receiver mainlobe. In such situations, conventional STAP cannot mitigate Doppler spread mainlobe clutter without also suppressing the target. MIMO radar techniques using orthogonal waveforms have been proposed for increasing radar coverage rate often at the expense of employing significantly larger radar time-bandwidth products. In this paper, we consider a MIMO approach wherein conventional radar waveforms are phase-coded to be orthogonal after Doppler processing at the receiver, i.e. in "slow-time." Slow-time MIMO has the advantages of being bandwidth efficient and easily implemented without the need to modify the receiver before range pulse-compression. In this paper, the mathematical formulation of MIMO STAP is developed for both direct-path and multipath clutter scenarios. At each slant range, the MIMO STAP processor operates on a receive sensor, transmitted pulses, and slow-time phase code channel data cube. Coherent combination of the decoded slow-time channels at the receiver permits effective control of the transmit array pattern by receive post-processing as a function of slant range. Simulation results demonstrate SNR gains when a transmit null is steered in the outbound direction towards the multiply scattered clutter.

Cognitive radio technology addresses the limited availability of wireless spectrum and inefficiency of spectrum usage. Cognitive Radio (CR) devices sense their environment, detect spatially unused spectrum and opportunistically access available spectrum without creating harmful interference to the incumbents. In cellular systems with licensed spectrum, the efficient utilization of the spectrum as well as the protection of primary users is equally important, which imposes opportunities and challenges for the application of CR. this paper introduces an experimental framework for 5G cognitive radio access in current 4G LTE cellular systems. It can be used to study CR concepts in different scenarios, such as 4G to 5G system migrations, machine-type communications, device-to-device communications, and load balancing. Using our framework, selected measurement results are presented that compare Long Term Evolution (LTE) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM) with a candidate 5G waveform called Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM) and quantify the benefits of GFDM in CR scenarios.

In this paper, we propose a novel myopic sensor scheduling methodology for tracking a target moving through a network of energy-constrained acoustic sensors. Specifically, we address the problem of activating the minimum-energy combination of sensors in a network that maintains a desired squared-error accuracy in the target's position estimate. We first formulate the scheduling problem as a binary (0-1) nonlinear programming (NLP) problem. Using a linearization technique, we then convert the 0-1 NLP problem into a 0-1 mixed integer programming (MIP) problem. We solve the reformulated 01 MIP problem using a linear programming relaxation based branch-and-bound technique. We demonstrate through Monte Carlo simulations that our proposed MIP scheduling method is very computational efficient as we can find optimal solutions to scheduling problems involving 50-60 sensors with processing time in the order of seconds.
