High variability of object features and bad local feature separation of object classes are the main causes for the difficulties encountered during the interpretation of ground-level natural scenes. the authors propose a knowledge-based scene classification and segmentation method. the first stage carries out object classification on the basis of known local feature default models. It then searches for regions which satisfy qualitative constraints in the classified object images and selects good, approximate object region candidates, using multiple features. this approach is constrained in a top-down manner by the local feature default model and qualitative constraints while at the same time operating in a data-driven style through automatic threshold value and window size selection mechanisms. the second stage extends and refines the result of the first stage by performing a constrained search for object boundaries.< >

the authors show some very recent results using the weak-calibration idea. Assuming that only the epipolar geometry is known of a pair of stereo images, encoded in the so-called fundamental matrix, it is shown that some useful three-dimensional information such as relative positions of points and planes and 3-D convex hulls can be computed. the notion of visibility is introduced, which allows deriving those properties. Results of both synthetic and real data are shown.< >

the authors propose to replace a set of connected 3-D points or line segments with a 3-D formable curve, using weighted least-squares approximation. the parameters of the 3-D energy-minimizing curve are updated so that its 2-D projections on two or three stereoscopic images converge toward the corresponding image edges. thus, a more realistic representation of the real non-polygonal world is obtained. the case where no initial 3-D information is provided is also considered. A novel approach is proposed to match a given 2-D curve in the first image to its corresponding position in the second image. the curve is tracked between the two images by a deformable curve constrained by a 2-D motion model. the position of the 2-D curve in the second image is then refined by relaxing the motion constraint. As a result, the correspondences between the curves of both images are known. An initial estimate of the 3-D curve can be recovered using the calibration parameters of the stereoscopic system. these approaches are illustrated by experimental results.< >

the author presents a method for reconstructing the three-dimensional scene geometry, i.e., depth, surface orientation, occluding contours, and surface creases, from a pair of stereo images. this reconstruction is not done as a postprocessing step, but rather all of the quantities are estimated simultaneously as part of the matching algorithm. An energy functional is considered in which each of the quantities in the scene geometry is explicitly represented. For this energy functional, a smoothness prior that, in addition to its ability to detect surface discontinuities and the accompanying half-occluded regions, is able to reconstruct steeply sloping surfaces with sharp creases is used. Experimental results demonstrating the effectiveness of the algorithm are presented.< >

the authors present a robust low-computational-cost system for recognizing freeform objects in 3-D range data or in 2-D curve data in the image plane. Objects are represented by implicit polynomials, i.e., 3-D algebraic surfaces or 2-D algebraic curves of degrees greater than two, and are recognized by computing and matching vectors of their algebraic invariants, which are functions of their coefficients that are invariant to translations, rotations, and general linear transformations. Implicit polynomials of fourth degree can represent complicated asymmetric free-form shapes. A design of Bayesian recognizers for these models and their invariants that results in low-computational-cost recognizers robust to noise, partial occlusion, and other perturbations of the data sets is considered. this work extends the work of D. Keren et al. (1992) by developing and using new invariants for 3-D surface polynomials and applying the Bayesian recognizer to operating on invariants.< >

the authors introduce a surface representation for recognizing curved objects. the approach begins by representing an object by a discrete mesh of points built from range data or from a geometric model of the object. the mesh is computed from the data by deforming a standard shaped mesh, for example, an ellipsoid, until it fits the surface of the object. Local regularity constraints that the mesh must satisfy are defined. A canonical mapping is then defined between the mesh describing the object and a standard spherical mesh. A surface curvature index which is pose-invariant is stored at every node of the mesh. this object representation is used for recognition by comparing the spherical model of a reference object with the model extracted from a new observed scene. It is shown that the similarity between reference model and observed data can be evaluated, and it is also demonstrated that the pose of the reference object in the observed scene can be easily computed using this representation.< >

the authors present a novel vector ridge detector which automatically finds the right scale of a ridge even in the presence of noise, multiple steps and narrow valleys. One of the key features of the ridge detector is that it has a zero response at discontinuities. the ridge detector can be applied both to scalar and vector quantities such as color. A parallel perceptual organization scheme that works without edges and is based on the ridge detector is also presented. In addition to perceptual groups, the scheme computes potential focus of attention points at which to direct future processing. the relation to human perception and several theoretical findings supporting the scheme are presented. Results of a Connection Machine implementation of the scheme are presented for perceptual organization using color.< >

A method for localization, the act of recognizing the environment, is presented. the method is based on representing the scene as a set of 2-D views and predicting the appearances of novel views by linear combinations of the model views. the method accurately approximates the appearance of scenes under weak perspective projection. Analysis of this projection as well as experimental results demonstrate that in many cases this approximation is sufficient to accurately describe the scene. When weak perspective approximation is invalid, either a larger number of models can be acquired or an iterative solution to account for the perspective distortions can be used. the method has several advantages over other approaches. It uses relatively rich representations; the representations are 2-D rather than 3-D; and localization can be done from only a single 2-D view.< >

the authors developed an algorithm for computing optical flow in a differential framework. the image sequence is first convolved with a set of linear, separable spatiotemporal filters similar to those that have been used in other early vision. the brightness constancy constraint can then be applied to each of the resulting images, giving in general, an overdetermined system of equations for the optical flow at each pixel. there are three principal sources of error: (a) stochastic due to sensor noise, (b) systematic errors in the presence of large displacements, and (c) errors due to failure of the brightness constancy model. the analysis of these errors leads to development of an algorithm based on a robust version of total least squares. Each optical flow vector computed has an associated reliability measure which can be used in subsequent processing. the performance of the algorithm on the data set used by J. Barron et al. (1992) compares favorably with other techniques. In addition to being separable, the filters used are also causal, incorporating only past time frames. the algorithm is fully parallel and has been implemented on a multipleprocessor machine.< >

the detection of occluding contours in images of 3-D scenes is a fundamental problem of vision. the authors present a computational model of contour processing that was suggested by neurophysiological recordings from the monkey visual cortex. the model uses convolutions and nonlinear operations, but no feedback loops. Contours are defined by the local maxima of the responses of a contour operator that sums a representation of contrast borders and a grouping signal. the grouping consists of convolving a representation of key-points, such as T-junctions, corners, and line ends, with a set of orientation selective kernels, and a nonlinear pairing operation. the grouping scheme is selective based on whether the configuration of key-points is consistent with the interpretation of occlusion. the resulting contour representation includes an indicator of figure-ground direction. It is shown that the model reproduces illusory contours in accurate agreement with perception and generates representations of occluding contours on images of natural scenes that are more complete and less cluttered by spurious connections of foreground and background than those obtained by conventional edge detection operators.< >
