this paper describes an automated system for visual detection of tool breakages. the system, consisting of a monochrome TV camera, a digitiser, and a frame store holds the digitised information. imageprocessing algorithms were developed to extract the appropriate features from the captured images before and after the tooling operation. A statistical maximum likelihood decision is then taken as to whether or not a tool breakage has occurred. It has been shown that the system can detect tool breakages with a typical reliability exceeding 90% under laboratory conditions and 80% in a production environment.

this paper describes the architecture and the operation of a linear processor array for iconic imageprocessing. the fundamental data structure are two dimensional matrices. the elements of these matrices are essentially gray scale intensity data (256 levels) but also distance data which are obtained by a laser scanner(triangulation). the parallel computer system is built up by 64 array processors. An array controller supervises these processors. A micro-programmable address sequencer divides the input images into 64 windows. GVS can operate either in the SIMD or in the MIMD mode. It is mainly conceived for three-dimensional object descriptions which are needed for the part handling of an assembly robot. A first step is done, to combine intensity and distance data in order to get integrated intrinsic images. Internal 3-D models are based on linear octrees and are generated by the aid of distance data.

Every radius of the description terminates on the last element of the object image. the processing time is reduced several times as compared with available techniques. A stereo algorithm to compute the location in space of flat objects (silhouettes) is presented. the algorithm is simplified by solving the correspondence problem only for the points of zero curvature of the shape contour. the points of zero curvature also show the property of being good perspective invariants allowing the stereo images to be acquired from quite different viewpoints (to increase accuracy). Moreover, because the camera parameters and the viewing geometry are known, the matching between points of zero curvature was reduced from a two-dimensional to a one-dimensional problem by searching for matching along conjugate epipolar lines. the equation of the plane on which the silhouette lies was determined with a precision of at least 99%.

this paper presents a novel method for detecting corner points in a scene. It is based on features extracted from the distribution of ordered greylevel values within a local window. the algorithm is effectively orientation independent. Results are presented for an image containing corners of different angles and orientations. A comparison is made between the positions obtained for the corners detected using this method and those obtained by direct measurement. the signal strengths of similar corners at different orientations are compared. the results of these comparisons show that the proposed algorithm can provide useful corner point information without the need for preprocessing of the image.
