Our previous research, aimed at improving the design of multi-attribute tables (such as product catalogs), found that black-and-white graphics aided decision-making more than numerical or textual formats (Ideno et al., diagrams 2020). We extended these findings by examining how combining graphic and numerical presentation (highlighting the cells with superior values) influences decision-making. Twenty-one participants chose the most desirable digital cameras from five alternatives. Results showed faster decision-making with highlighted cells compared to non-highlighted ones. A two-stage decision strategy emerged, with more attribute-based gaze shifts initially and equal vertical and horizontal shifts later. We discussed the implications and prospects of highlighted multi-attribute tables.

We study the "quadri-segment" B(4)2, a point in the space BMN of the "poly-simplexes" of "oppositional geometry". this is the mathematical 4-valued counterpart of the expression, inside the classical 2-valued "bi-simplicial" space B2N, of the segment of 2-valued contradiction B(2)2 (e.g. any of the 3 diagonals in a "logical hexagon" B(2)3, cf. [7]). We rely on a method of poly-simplicial construction put forward in our study [10] of the "tri-segment" B(3)2 (i.e. 3-valued contradiction), based on sheaf-theory (Angot-Pellissier, [2]) and on the "Pascalian simplexes" PM [3]. We show that the quadri-segment B42 is composed of 8 hexagonal tri-segments B(3)2, 4 of which are "strong" (B(3)2*) while the other 4 are "weak" (B(3)2#). these 4 + 4 hexagonal tri-segments are "glued" (each strong to its correlated weak) by another sub-structure of the B(4)2, made of 3 squares. the quadri-segment B(4)2, with its 12 vertices, has as "geometric attractor" a 3D cuboctahedron. It will be recalled how "logical geometry" (Smessaert, Demey [12, 13]) is a fragment of oppositional geometry, where the 2 Smessaertian sub-geometries ("oppositive" and "implicative") undergo, in each poly-simplex, "Aristotelian fusion" into a unique geometry. the quadri-segment B(4)2 will be useful, in the future, for exploring a higher poly-simplex, the quadri-triangle B(4)3, i.e. the 4-valued counterpart of the classical (bi-simplicial) "logical hexagon" B(2)3.

Although both so-called 'data comics' and 'comics geographies' fields have been defined as emerging, there is a lack of structured and multidisciplinary studies that deal with comics' diagrammatic nature. the parallelism between comics and diagrams, dear to many comics makers and some scholars, is more than a mere graphic suggestion or similarity. Unlike the written word and other visual art forms, comics, through the multi-vectorial narrative skills typical of the page layout, overcomes alphabetic writing's linearity to open up to synchronic and parallel space-time narratives. Comics also favours ellipses, spatial dislocations, and micro-narrations in larger narratives more naturally than in other artistic and narrative forms. Moreover, comics make possible, differently than in literature, a strong involvement of the reader in constructing alternative paths. the grid is the element that brings comics back under the category of diagrams through its ability to temporalize space and create hierarchies and relationships between the parts (panels). through some examples, this paper offers an introductive overview of the many possibilities offered by a diagrammatic reading of comics, demonstrating how even the most straightforward grid configurations can convey complex concepts.

throughout the history of the philosophy of science, theories have been linked to formulas as a privileged representational format. In this paper, following [8], I defend a semantic-representational conception of theories, where theories are identified with sets of scientific re-presentations by virtue of their epistemic potential and independently of their format. To show the potential of this proposal, I analyze as a case study the use of phase diagrams in statistical mechanics to convey in a semantically consistent and syntactically correct way theoretical principles such as Liouville's theorem. I conclude by defending this philosophical position as a tool to show the enormous representational richness underlying scientific practices.

Choosing how to represent knowledge effectively is a long-standing open problem. Cognitive science has shed light on the taxonomisation of representational systems from the perspective of cognitive processes, but a similar analysis is absent from the perspective of problem solving, where the representations are employed. In this paper we review how representation choices are made for solving problems in the context of theorem proving from three perspectives: cognition, heterogeneity, and computational demands. We contrast the different factors that are most important for each perspective in the context of problem solving to produce a list of considerations for developers of problem solving tools regarding representations that are appropriate for particular users and effective for specific problem domains.

Fundamental disciplinary differences may be traceable to the use of visual representations, with researchers in the physical and life sciences relying more heavily on visuality. Our goal was to examine how inscriptions are used by scientists in different disciplines. We analyzed 2,467 articles from journals in biology, criminology and criminal justice, gerontology, library and information science, medicine, psychology, and sociology. Proportion of page space dedicated to graphs, tables, and non-graph illustrations was calculated. A Visuality Index was defined as the proportion of page space dedicated to visual depictions of data and non-data information. An ANOVA indicated a statistically significant difference between disciplines, interaction between inscription type and discipline, with articles published in biology journals dedicating more page space to graphs. the significant overlap in inscription use and visuality indicates imperfect disciplinary demarcation, suggesting similar methodological and data analytic practices within a discipline and between subdisciplines.

the standard attitude to Euclid's diagrams is focused on assumptions hidden behind intersecting lines. We adopt an alternative perspective and study the diagrams in terms of a balance between the visual and theoretical components involved in a proposition. We consider theoretical components to consist of definitions, Postulates, Common Notions, and references to previous propositions. the residuum makes the visual part of the proof. through analysis of propositions I.6, I.13, and II.1-4, we show that such residuum actually exists. We argue that it is related to a primitive lesser-greater relation between figures, or an undefined relation of the concatenation of figures. We also identify a tendency in the Elements to eliminate visual aspects in order to achieve generality founded on theoretical grounds alone. Our analysis spans between two versions of the Pythagorean theorem, i.e., I.47 and VI.31. We study the diagrams in Books I through VI in terms of how visual elements are being replaced in favor of theoretical components. that process is crowned by proposition VI.31. None of its parts build on the accompanying diagram. Moreover, it concerns objects that are not represented on the diagram at all. In fact, this pattern applies to most propositions of Book VI. therefore, we treat VI.31 as a model example of Euclidean methodology, not as an exception.

Does the choice of colour-coding scheme affect the usability of metro maps, as measured by the accuracy and speed of navigation? Using colour to differentiate lines or services in maps of metro rail networks has been a common practice around the world for many decades. Broadly speaking, there are two basic schemes: 'route colouring', in which each end-to-end route has a distinct colour, and 'trunk colouring', in which each major trunk has a distinct colour, and the individual routes inherit the colour of the main trunk that they run along. A third, intermediate scheme is 'shaded colouring', in which each trunk has a distinct colour, and each route has a distinct shade of that colour. In this study, 285 volunteers in the US were randomised to these three colour-coding schemes and performed seventeen navigational tasks. Each task involved tracing a route in the New York City subway map. Overall, we found that route colouring was significantly more accurate than the trunk-and shaded-colouring schemes. A planned subset analysis, however, revealed major differences between specific navigational hazards: route colouring performed better only against certain navigational hazards;trunk colouring performed best against one hazard;and other hazards showed no effect of colour coding. Route colouring was significantly faster only in one subset.

How does one visually represent the use of time? We explored students' use of graphical metaphors by asking undergraduates at a public French university to generate representations of their personal time-use including: activities, sequence, duration, timing, and frequency. the resulting use of space and form was analyzed by way of an iteratively developed coding scheme. We discuss how the analyses of the spontaneous productions support previous research on spatial representations of time, and the implications for the design of time management tools for students.
