Euler diagrams, used to visualize data and as a basis for visual languages, are an effective representation of information, but they can become cluttered. Previous research established a measure of Euler diagram clutter, empirically shown to correspond with how people perceive clutter. However, the impact of clutter on user understanding is unknown. An empirical study was executed with three levels of diagram clutter. We found a significant effect: increased diagram clutter leads to significantly worse performance, measured by time and error rates. In addition, we found a significant effect of zone (a region in the diagram) clutter on time and error rates. Surprisingly, the zones with a middle level of clutter had the highest error rate compared to the zones with lowest and the highest clutter. Also, the questions whose answers were placed in zones with medium clutter had the highest mean time taken to answer questions. In conclusion, both diagram clutter and zone clutter impact the interpretation of Euler diagrams. Consequently, future work will establish whether a single, but cluttered, Euler diagram is a more effective representation of information than multiple, but less cluttered, Euler diagrams.

there are a range of diagram types that can be used to visualize sets. However, there is a significant lack of insight into which is the most effective visualization. To address this knowledge gap, this paper empirically evaluates four diagram types: Venn diagrams, Euler diagrams with shading, Euler diagrams without shading, and the less well-known linear diagrams. By collecting performance data (time to complete tasks and error rate), through crowdsourcing, we establish that linear diagrams outperform the other three diagram types in terms of both task completion time and number of errors. Venn diagrams perform worst from both perspectives. thus, we provide evidence that linear diagrams are the most effective of these four diagram types for representing sets.

Euler diagrams are often used for visualizing data collected into sets. However, there is a significant lack of guidance regarding graphical choices for Euler diagram layout. To address this deficiency, this paper asks the question 'does the shape of a closed curve affect a user's comprehension of an Euler diagram?' By empirical study, we establish that curve shape does indeed impact on understandability. Our analysis of performance data indicates that circles perform best, followed by squares, with ellipses and rectangles jointly performing worst. We conclude that, where possible, circles should be used to draw effective Euler diagrams. Further, the ability to discriminate curves from zones and the symmetry of the curve shapes is argued to be important. We utilize perceptual theory to explain these results. As a consequence of this research, improved diagram layout decisions can be made for Euler diagrams whether they are manually or automatically drawn.

Many of the formal diagrammatic logics that have been developed are limited to be first order (typically monadic). this means that such logics cannot define commonly occurring concepts and, thus, are not as widely applicable as we might like. Suitably increasing their expressiveness will allow both the formalization of second order concepts and the study of such concepts from a new perspective. Our aim is to produce a second order diagrammatic logic and we present the initial ideas towards the development of such a logic.

Originally, our main research goal was to investigate human wayfinding in complex architectural spaces such as conference centres, airport terminals and the like. (Hölscher et al., 2006) At the same time, the profession of architecture, which largely forms these environments, came into play. Sketches and diagrams play a central role in the process of architectural design - to assist thinking and as a device of communication. (Laseau, 1989) Furthermore, Goel (1995) argues that certain characteristics of sketches perfectly match the requirements in early phases of design problem solving. In an interview study with experienced architectural designers, our informers frequently produced sketches (Brösamle & Hölscher, 2008), and the verbal transcripts of these interview could only be understood with reference to these sketches. Unlike the transcriptcentred approach in the earlier studies, we presently employ a diagram-based way of querying the multi-modal corpus. this exposes the diagrammatic characteristics of the design activity to the research process, and grounds the often idiosyncratic verbal comments in an architecture-typical medium, namely plans and sketches. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Shimojima and Katagiri have demonstrated that diagrams reduce "inferential load" during reasoning by scaffolding visual-spatial aspects of memory. In response, we wondered why, if this is true, that proofs are usually text based? the purpose of this paper is to explore ergonomic affordances of text that may encourage its use in the communication of proofs by building on prior work in attention. We claim that textual notations may focus a reasoner's "spotlight" of attention through serialized sequential chunks, whereas many diagrams may "diffuse" attention and that a diagrammatic notation system that serialized information in chunks amenable to focused attention could leverage the power of textual notations. We present such an example through a case study focused on generalized constraint diagrams, a visual logic with attributes that may support focused attention and extract ergonomic principles that may transcend each notation system.

Euler diagrams are a popular method for visualising sets and their relationships, exploited for resource management and visual logic specification, for example. We add the notion of colouring, provide a formal description of the extended system and demonstrate how coloured Euler diagrams provide adequate visualisations for concepts in the new bio-inspired model of Reaction Systems and for polyarchies, visualising multiple intersecting hierarchies.

Euler diagrams have numerous applications in information visualization as well as logical reasoning. they are typically used for displaying relationships between sets, such as whether one set is a subset of another. In addition, they can represent information about the relative cardinalities of the visualized sets by making the areas of the regions in the diagrams proportional to the set cardinalities. Using visualizations can allow the user to readily make interpretations that are not immediately apparent from the raw data set. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Investigating the expressiveness of a diagrammatic logic provides insight into how its syntactic elements interact at the semantic level. Moreover, it allows for comparisons with other notations. Various expressiveness results for diagrammatic logics are known, such as the theorem that Shin's Venn-II system is equivalent to monadic first order logic. the techniques employed by Shin for Venn-II were adapted to allow the expressiveness of Euler diagrams to be investigated. We consider the expressiveness of spicier diagrams of order (SDoO), which extend spicier diagrams by including syntax that provides ordering information between elements. Fragments of SDoO are created by systematically removing each aspect of the syntax. We establish the relative expressiveness of the various fragments. In particular, one result establishes that spiders are syntactic sugar in any fragment that contains order, negation and shading. We also show that shading is syntactic sugar in any fragment containing negation and spiders. the existence of syntactic redundancy within the spider diagram of order logic is unsurprising however, we find it interesting that spiders or shading are redundant in fragments of the logic. Further expressiveness results are presented throughout the paper. the techniques we employ may well extend to related notations, such as the Euler/Venn logic of Swoboda et al. and Kent's constraint diagrams.
