this paper presents a strategy to facilitate the customization of MDSE software development environments, which aims at providing the software engineers who design, implement and maintain those environments with capacity to automate the generation of tools supporting new development processes. A generic conception for the design of software development environments based on the MDSE paradigm, called MDDE (model-driven development Environment), has been defined as basis of the proposed strategy. In MDDE, the definition of the processes that determine the functionality of an environment as well as their options regarding interaction, supervision and control by the users are completely formulated as models. To support this capability, the MDDE reference model includes a meta-model that formalizes such models. A sample implementation called MDDE-MinMAST2 is presented for illustrative purposes.

Industrial Cyber Physical Systems (CPSs) are naturally complex. Manual configuration of CPS product lines is error-prone and inefficient, which warrants the need for automated support of product configuration activities such as decision inference and decision ordering. A fully automated solution is often impossible for CPSs since some decisions must be made manually by configuration engineers and thus requiring an interactive and step-by-step configuration solution. Having an interactive solution with tool support in mind, we propose a search-based solution (named as Zen-DO) to support optimal ordering of configuration steps. the optimization objective has three parts: 1) minimizing overall manual configuration steps, 2) configuring most constraining decisions first, and 3) satisfying ordering dependencies among variabilities. We formulated our optimization objective as a fitness function and investigated it along with four search algorithms: Alternating Variable Method (AVM), (1+1) Evolutionary Algorithm (EA), Genetic Algorithm, and Random Search (a comparison baseline). their performance is evaluated in terms of finding an optimal solution for two real-world case studies of varying complexity and results show that AVM and (1+1) EA significantly outperformed the others.

development of AUTOSAR-based embedded systems in Unified modeling Language (UML) tools is an emerging state-of-the-art practice in the automotive industry. In case of such automotive systems with strict timing requirements (e.g. advanced driver assistance systems), not only the correctness of the computation results is important, but also their timeliness. this necessitates comprehensive and early verification and validation procedures to ensure desired software quality without overshooting the budget. the main input required for such timing analysis, in specialized timing analysis tools, is the AUTOSAR-timing model corresponding to the timing annotated AUTOSAR-design model. thus, synthesis of such a timing analysis model from AUTOSAR-based design model (developed in UML tools), early in the development stages, constitutes an important step and a research gap. Towards this direction, this paper presents a systematic approach for extraction and synthesis of timing analysis model from AUTOSAR-based embedded system design models developed in UML tools. A prototype of model transformations for the synthesis of timing models and its evaluation in an automotive use case are presented.

OMG's PSCS specification extends the execution model of fUML by precise runtime semantics for UML composite structures. With composite structures being a concept for describing structural properties of a model, the majority of execution semantics specified by PSCS concern analysis and processing of static information about the model's fine-grained structure at runtime. Using model-To-Text-Transformation to generate source code, which serves as an input for PSCS's actual execution environment, the runtime level of model execution can be relieved by outsourcing analysis and processing of static information to the level of code generation. By inserting this step of preprocessing, the performance of the actual model execution at runtime can be improved. this paper introduces an implementation of the PSCS specification for C++ based on code generation using model-to-Text-Transformation. Moreover, it presents a set of test models validating the correct functionality of the implementation as well as a performance benchmark. the PSCS implementation presented by this paper was developed as a part of the MDE4CPP* project.

model driven engineering allows many stakeholders to contribute their expertise to the system description. this practice enables agility but implies consistency maintenance issues between different system models. Incremental model transformations (IMT) are used to synchronize different artifacts contributed by the stakeholders. IMTs detect changes on the source model and execute change rules to propagate updates to the target model. However, the execution of change rules is not straightforward. A rule is only correctly executed if its precondition is satisfied at execution time. the precondition checks the availability of certain source and target elements involved in the rule. If a rule is executed when the precondition is false, either the execution is blocked or stopped. therefore, the produced target model becomes incorrect. this paper presents two approaches to the scheduling of change rule execution in incremental model transformations. these approaches are also applied to the case of model and code synchronization and implemented in a tool named IncRoundtrip that transforms and generates code for distributed systems. Internet of things (IoT) devices are usually advanced embedded systems that require functionalities monitoring and control. the design, development and validation of these devices is complex, even more when communication capabilities need to be included. In industrial environments, where safety is of critical importance, reducing this complexity can help to achieve the vision of Industry 4.0 by reducing development time and costs as well as increasing quality. To this end, the use of model-driven engineering (MDE) methodology and the software Product Line (SPL) paradigm is becoming increasingly important as they help to accelerate and ease the development of software, while reducing bugs and errors. thus, in this work we present TRILATERAL, a SPL model Based tool that uses a Domain Specific Language (DSL) to allow users to graphically define the IEC 61850 information model of the Industrial Cyber-Physical System (ICPS). TRILATERAL automatically generates the source code for communicating devices with the monitoring framework, also supporting a variety of communication protocols, namely HTTP-REST, WS-SOAP and CoAP in order to control/monitor any ICPS. In addition, the solution was evaluated deploying it in different industrial domains (Wind Farm, Smart Elevator, Catenary-free Tram) from which we gained important lessons.

Modern Cyber-physical Systems are executed in physical environments and distributed over several Electronic Control Units using multiple cores for execution. these systems perform safety-critical tasks and, therefore, have to fulfill hard real-time requirements. To face these requirements systematically, system engineers develop these systems model-driven and prove the fulfillment of these requirements via model checking. It is important to ensure that the runtime scheduling does not violate the verified requirements by neglecting the model checking assumptions. Currently, there is a gap in the process for model-driven approaches to derive a feasible runtime scheduling that respects these assumptions. In this paper, we present an approach for a semiautomatic synthesis of behavioral models into a deterministic scheduling that respects real-time requirements at runtime. We evaluate our approach using an example of a distributed automotive system with hard real-time requirements specified with the MechatronicUML method.

Several development approaches have been proposed to cope with the increasing complexity of embedded system design. the most widely used approaches are those using models as the main artifacts to be constructed and maintained. the desired role of models is to ease, systematize and standardize the approach to the construction of software-based systems. To enforce reuse and interconnect the process of model specification and system development with models, we promote a model-based approach coupled with a model repository. In this paper, we propose a model-driven engineering methodological approach for the development of a model repository and an operational architecture for development tools. In addition, we provide evidence of the benefits and feasibility of our approach by reporting on a preliminary prototype that provides a model-based repository of security and dependability (S&D) pattern models. Finally, we apply the proposed approach in practice to a use case from the railway domain with strong S&D requirements. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nowadays, the volume of data manipulated by our information systems is growing so rapidly that they cannot be efficiently managed and exploited only by means of standard relational data management systems. Hence the recent emergence of NoSQL datastores as alternative/complementary choices for big data management. While NoSQL datastores are usually designed with high performance and scalability as primary concerns, this often comes at a cost of tolerating (temporary) data inconsistencies. this is the case, in particular, for managing referential integrity in graph-oriented datastores, for which no support currently exists. this paper presents a MDE-based, tool-supported approach to the definition and enforcement of referential integrity constraints (RICs) in graph-oriented NoSQL datastores. this approach relies on a domain-specific language allowing users to specify RICs as well as the way they must be managed. this specification is then exploited to support the automated identification and correction of RICs violations in a graph-oriented datastore. We illustrate the application of our approach, currently implemented for Neo4J, through a small experiment.
