numerical differentiation from scattered data is a problem often encountered in many fields such as image processing and numerical solution of differential equations. We propose a fast algorithm for numerical differentiation starting from scattered data. the proposed algorithm uses nonuniform Fast Fourier Transform (nFFT) and the explicit expression of the eigensystem of a Fredholm integral operator associated to the differentiation problem. Several numerical experiments are presented to validate the behaviour of the proposed algorithm with exact data and with noise-contaminated data. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in developing in vitro models that predict the behavior of cells in living organisms. Mathematical models based on differential equations, and related numerical algorithms, have been provided to this aim. In this work, we present first experiences in designing parallel strategies for accelerating an algorithm for behavior prediction based on the Cellular Potts Model (CPM). In particular, we exploit the computational power of Graphic Process Units in CUDA environment to address main low-level kernels involved. In this work, a framework for the automatic symbolic index reduction and numerical integration of generic differential-algebraic equation systems is presented. the proposed approach does not exploit any a priori knowledge of the specific differential-algebraic system of equation formulation. the index reduction is performed only with the aim of linear algebra techniques. Hierarchical representation of expressions is conveniently used to limit expression swell and ensure the numerical stability of the solution. the effectiveness of the algorithm is validated through symbolic and numerical experiments on a multi-body model. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Atomistic simulations are a powerful tool to analyse the structure and the behavior of various biological molecules and are widely used in biochemistry studies. Currently, there are several software packages available which provide the algorithms for the numerical resolution of the physical equation necessary for the simulations. those softwares are demanding and need to handle a large amounts of resources, therefore the hardware in use has to be efficient in terms of performance and costs. Here we tested the Molecular Dynamics toolkit Gromacs on different platforms: Intel, AMD and ARM clusters are considered, also with the support of NVIDIA GPUs. During the tests energy consumption is measured in both idle and working case obtaining the energy to solution for every machine. While the highest performances are obtained with Intel we found that AMD and ARM servers are valid option if energy savings is considered alongside performance, the use of GPU gives a remarkable contribution to reduce consumption. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

the formal description of the assets and liabilities management (ALM) by a bank within regulatory requirements leads to an optimal control problem with phase constraints. the phase constraints arise from the restrictions on banking activities, which are set by law to maintain the banking process. Solving such model explicitly is rarely possible, and numerical calculations enable to study its properties. the indirect method of the solution involves formulating the system of necessary optimality conditions and then computation of the ordinary differential equations system combined with specific equations for dual variables. this paper provides the details of application of the numerical methods and its specifics in the proposed economic model. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

this paper introduces a novel application of frequency and amplitude formulation to determine the frequency of nonlinear Duffing oscillations. the formulation represents one of the simplest methods for estimating the relationship between frequency and amplitude. there is a pressing need for the swift calculation of the periodic properties of nonlinear oscillators in the applied sciences. Additionally, the paper addresses the challenge of identifying bifurcated solutions of the Duffing equation in space. A critical parameter value induces a bifurcation from a trivial solution to a nontrivial solution. the solutions obtained through the frequency-amplitude formulation are compared with results obtained through other perturbation methods documented in the literature. the proposed method has demonstrated its efficacy as a robust mathematical tool for various nonlinear oscillators, eliminating the necessity for linearization or perturbation. Furthermore, this method can be readily extended to address other nonlinear oscillating systems and nonlinear boundary value problems exhibiting bifurcations. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Game theory is a rather vast discipline, the purpose of which is to analyze the strategic behaviors of decision-makers (players), or to study the situations in which different players interact pursuing common, different or conflicting objectives. the first purpose of this paper is to discuss the possibility of approaching elementary game theory in high schools. the second objective is to analyze the students’ response in terms of learning, but also of liking. Is it possible "giocare con la teoria dei giochi" (Engl. transl: play with game theory) in the classroom? the third objective is to highlight the possible links between elementary game theory and the grossone-based system introduced by Y.D. Sergeyev. Once again with the didactic aspect of providing high school students with an "easy" and stimulating approach to modern research fields in mathematics. In particular, we describe the approach to a little cycle of lessons of two classes and the performances of a conclusive students’ class test. We will see a great students response, above all regarding the connection between game theory and the grossone system. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
