BFT consensus that uses Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) to improve the system tolerance and performance is gaining popularity. However, existing works suffer from TEE rollback issues, resulting in a tolerance-performance tradeoff. In this paper, we propose Achilles, an efficient TEE-assisted BFT protocol that breaks the tradeoff. the key idea behind Achilles is removing the expensive rollback prevention of TEEs from the critical path of committing transactions. To this end, Achilles adopts a rollback resilient recovery mechanism, which allows nodes to assist each other in recovering their states. Besides, Achilles follows the chaining spirit in modern chained BFT protocols and leverages customized chained commit rules to achieve linear message complexity, end-to-end transaction latency of four communication steps, and fault tolerance for the minority of Byzantine nodes. Achilles is the first TEE-assisted BFT protocol in line with CFT protocols in these metrics. We implement a prototype of Achilles based on Intel SGX and evaluate it in both LAN and WAN, showcasing its outperforming performance compared to several state-of-the-art counterparts. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

this research explores the intersection of neuroscience and architecture, focusing on how personality traits, including Conscientiousness, Extraversion, and Neuroticism, influence environmental perception and interaction. Intriguingly, it uncovers that these traits correlate with preferences for specific architectural styles and associated music. For instance, personalities like Openness, Conscientiousness, and Extraversion preferred coastal style, while Neuroticism uniquely favored art Deco. Similarly, Brutalist architecture resonated with Conscientiousness, Extraversion, and Neuroticism, whereas Openness, Conscientiousness, and Agreeableness preferred the Gothic style, and the Rustic style appealed to Openness and Extraversion. Multi-BFT consensus runs multiple leader-based consensus instances in parallel, circumventing the leader bottleneck of a single instance. However, it contains an Achilles’ heel: the need to globally order output blocks across instances. Deriving this global ordering is challenging because it must cope with different rates at which blocks are produced by instances. Prior Multi-BFT designs assign each block a global index before creation, leading to poor performance. We propose Ladon, a high-performance Multi-BFT protocol that allows varying instance block rates. Our key idea is to order blocks across instances dynamically, which eliminates blocking on slow instances. We achieve dynamic global ordering by assigning monotonic ranks to blocks. We pipeline rank coordination with the consensus process to reduce protocol overhead and combine aggregate signatures with rank information to reduce message complexity. Ladon’s dynamic ordering enables blocks to be globally ordered according to their generation, which respects inter-block causality. We implemented and evaluated Ladon by integrating it with both PBFT and HotStuff protocols. Our evaluation shows that Ladon-PBFT (resp., Ladon-HotStuff) improves the peak throughput of the prior art by ≈ 8× (resp., 2×) and reduces latency by ≈ 62% (resp., 23%), when deployed with one straggling replica (out of 128 replicas) in a WAN setting. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Damage and collapse of masonry infills are widely observed in earthquakes. It is also found that the economic losses caused by the failure of masonry infill walls, such as repair or reconstruction costs of walls, equipment damage, and functional loss of the buildings, may even far exceed those caused by structural members. the primary objective of this paper is to present a general review of the different kinds of interventions carried out to protect the infills not only preventing the in-plane damage but also improving out-of-plane stability. Besides, as far as the state of the art is concerned, a taxonomy of the interventions is proposed, and the advantages and limitations of each group of interventions are discussed. Lastly, a preliminary conception of a new preservation system made by eco-sustainable regenerated rubber is proposed, not only to prevent damage that occurs in infills but also to limit costs and facilitate installation. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Oracle Bone Inscriptions (OBI), as the oldest form of Chinese writing, bears the precious heritage of ancient Chinese civilization. Deciphering OBI has been a monumental challenge in archaeology and philology. However, the preservation method of OBI through rubbings faces significant challenges due to severe noise interference, adversely affecting the accuracy of OBI detection. Additionally, existing traditional object detection algorithms inadequately consider the unique characteristics of OBI, making it difficult to effectively identify Oracle characters on OBI rubbings. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel approach to OBI detection, Oracle Character Prototype-guided cyclic disentanglement for OBI detection. these features are amalgamated into distinct character structure prototypes by capturing shared character structure features among different Oracle characters. this approach highlights the distinctive forms of Oracle characters, enhancing feature clarity and recognition. the Oracle Character Prototypes enable the model to learn common features across different character forms, improving its adaptability to various Oracle character structures and enhancing its capability to handle complexity. Moreover, to mitigate the impact of noise on detection, we introduce a cyclic disentanglement method for Oracle Bone Inscriptions. this process, utilizing the Oracle Character Prototypes and contrastive loss as supervisory signals, cyclically decouples Oracle features, isolating information rich in character structure features. this effectively mitigates the influence of noise on OBI detection. Comprehensive evaluations were conducted, comparing our method with state-of-the-art object detection algorithms, validating its effectiveness both qualitatively and quantitatively. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

the ancient Greeks possessed a deep understanding of geometry, reflected in their quest for proportion and harmony across various art forms, including Greek Vase design. this study explores the geometric ratios of Greek Vases, uncovering the influence of ancient Greek mathematical principles on aesthetic standards. We have analyzed and quantified the Greek Vases ’ parameters based on Caskey’s extensive measurements [4], along with additional charts and graphs. this analysis helps group Greek Vases based on their geometric ratios clarifies the relationship between these geometric ratios and vase types, and explores the link between geometric ratios and vase function. Our findings indicate that Greek Vases can be categorized according to geometric ratios, with most Greek Vases of a particular type following these proportional standards. In addition, certain types of vases have specific ratios, and through machine learning, it was found that different types of vases in the same cluster have similar uses, and some also have similar shapes. © ICST Institute for Computer sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering 2025.

As the memory demand continues to surge, the limitations of DRAM scalability have spurred the development of various new memory technologies in today’s data centers. In order to harness the benefits of the heterogeneous memory architecture, tiering has become a widely adopted memory management paradigm. the effectiveness of a tiered memory management system primarily relies on its ability to accurately identify frequently accessed ("hot") pages and infrequently accessed ("cold") pages, and efficiently relocate them between tiers. However, existing systems rely on coarse-grained frequency measurement schemes that do not align with the performance characteristics of modern memory devices and memory-intensive applications. Additionally, these systems often incorporate rigid rules or manually configured parameters for page classification, resulting in inflexible migration strategies. this paper introduces Chrono, a novel OS-level tiering system that offers precise characterization of page access frequencies in different tiers and enables efficient migration of hot and cold pages. By leveraging timers instead of counters, Chrono achieves meticulous measurement of hot page access frequency with low overhead. this approach allows Chrono to automatically tune its page classification parameters, leading to flexible migration strategies that adapt to various workloads. Furthermore, Chrono includes a dynamic cold page identification subsystem, which balances the utilization and availability of tiered memory. We have implemented and evaluated Chrono on existing tiered memory platforms, and experimental results demonstrate that Chrono outperforms state-of-the-art tiering systems by a large margin. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

the Maximum Satisfiability Problem (MAX-SAT) is a crucial NP-hard optimization problem with applications in artificial intelligence, circuit design, scheduling, and combinatorial optimization. In this work, we provide a unique hybrid strategy that blends Genetic Algorithms (GA) with Social Group Optimization (SGO) algorithm to effectively solve the MAX-SAT problem. the SGO algorithm, inspired by the social behavior of groups, excels in exploring diverse regions of the search space. w used a binary variant of SGO i.e. Binary-SGO which is defined specifically for binary search spaces, while GA leverages evolutionary principles to exploit local optima through selection, crossover, and mutation. By integrating the exploration capabilities of SGO with the exploitation strengths of GA, the hybrid approach strikes an optimal balance between global and local search. Extensive experimental evaluations conducted on standard MAX-SAT benchmarks demonstrate that our hybrid algorithm outperforms several existing state-of-the-art meta-heuristic algorithms. Hybrid BSGO-GA achieved the highest average fitness values, with an average accuracy of 99.7% in Experiment 1, 99.61% in Experiment 2, and 99.21% in Experiment 3 and achieved complete satisfiability in 55 out of 75 cases in Experiment 1, 42 out of 75 cases in Experiment 2, and 7 out of 75 cases in Experiment 3. this approach demonstrates the potential of hybrid metaheuristics in addressing complex optimization problems and offers a robust framework for tackling other NP-hard problems. © 2025 the Authors. this article provides a concise analysis of the current limitations in PV systems and suggests improving the feasibility of engineering applications through the integration of energy storage devices, thereby establishing a distributed photovoltaic storage system model. Utilizing historical load and photovoltaic data from a company in South China, the study employs optimization programming software to achieve operational economic optimization on a typical day. Furthermore, it explores the economic advantages of the distributed photovoltaic storage system over an extended time scale in practical engineering scenarios.

Online reviews play a significant role in e-commerce. Consumer has been more relied on them when making decision in purchasing. However, unethical businesses may spread deceptive reviews to manipulate consumer`s opinion. Research by Ott et al. (2011) [2] showed that humans can only identify fraud reviews with only an accuracy of 57.3%. Besides, recent research face a crucial challenge that the cross-domain classification model is too rely on similar datasets from the same domain, which causes in a sharp decline in accuracy when testing on datasets from different domain. Currently, there is a lack of method on text features or rules to share with different domains Hence, our study proposes a model based on Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT). We suggest replacing domain-specific words in reviews with [MASK] to overcome the significant stylistic differences between cross-domain reviews. Our research utilizes reviews from Ott et al. (2011) [2] and Li et al. (2014) [3] in the domains of restaurants, hotels, and doctors, supplemented with Yelp reviews as real data for training. Finally, we compare the results of MASK-BERT with the state-of-the-art approach by Ren & Ji (2017) [4]. In the cross-domain, particularly in the doctor domain with larger content differences, our proposed masking mechanism leads to a highest accuracy improvement of 15–20%. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
