We present a simple approach to constructing phase-only tapers for regular planar arrays that is analogous to the instantaneous-frequency approach classically used to construct FM-chirp waveforms with high time-bandwidth products. Design experiments for a large triangular-grid array show that the crude results yielded by this method when aperture-beamwidth products are modest can sometimes be "tweaked" into reasonableness. We conjecture that such a taper would improve upon the usual uniform-weight starting point for a nonlinear-optimization approach that seeks out a local optimum. Specific design examples presented here nominally aim to approximate a brick-wall beam and a variant of a Gaussian beam. © 2010 IEEE.

Coscinodiscus Ehrenberg is a large and ecologically important diatom genus with plentiful species in marine phytoplankton and with a variety of round shapes and ornamentation. these properties can be measured by computer image pre-segmentation and feature extraction with threshold methods. However, it proves to be complicated task because of the high spatial variability of ornamentation properties. Researchers have shown a Teach-program and a number of library functions operating on sample image lists (SIL's) and operating on classifiers (CF's) to solve the problem. In this paper, we present Coscinodiscus Ehrenberg ornamentation classifier algorithm called support vector machines (SVMs) to derive a new set of SH,'s and CF's. the principal purpose of SVMs is Coscinodiscus Ehrenberg images pattern recognition approach. A pattern is in this context always the SH,'s contained in a sub rectangle of some given (possibly larger) image. For the same classifier this sub-rectangle must always have the same dimensions, while the query image to be searched may be arbitrarily large. the training is done by preparing SH,'s for the pattern taxa in question and feeding them to CF's created. Our classifier generation with preprocessing code optimization achieves a AAAAA preprocessing code, a 0.981 learning success, a 100% computational complexity. Train with SH,'s achieves 212 samples, 17 taxa, a 0.472% error rate and Test with Query image searching achieves 253 samples, 17 taxa, a 15.81% error rate. the experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is very robust to the threshold segmentation and ornamentation feature extraction of Coscinodiscus Ehrenberg images, and is effective and useful for species classification of Coscinodiscus Ehrenberg.

the paper presents the dynamic modeling and coordinated control strategy for an integrated micro grid scheme using Photo Voltaic PV, Fuel Cell FC, and backup Diesel generation with additional battery backup system. the integrated scheme is fully stabilized using a novel FACTS based green filter compensators that ensures stabilized DC bus voltage, minimal inrush current conditions, and load excursions while ensuring that the diesel generator set is only utilized when the demand energy exceeds the PV, FC and battery sources capacity within a specified operational levels to ensure highest efficient operation of the integrated renewable energy sources with the diesel engine. the paper presents a novel application of Multi Objective Particle Swarm optimization MOPSO to control the 6-pulse controlled rectifier converter, dynamic filter/capacitor compensation DFC and the Green Power Filter GPF AC and DC schemes using real time dynamic self regulating error tracking. A tri-loop error driven dynamic controller is used to adjust the PWM switching of the DFCDynamic AC side filter compensator and green power filter. © 2010 IEEE.

As an activity to ensure quality and conformance, testing is one of the most important activities in any software or hardware product development cycle. Often, the challenge in testing is that the system may support a wide range of configurations. Ideally, it is desirable to test all of these configurations exhaustively. However, exhaustive testing is practically impossible due to time and resource limitations. To address this issue, there is a need for a sampling strategy that can select a subset of inputs as test data from an inherently large search space. Recent findings demonstrate that t-way interaction testing strategies based on artificial intelligence (i.e. where t indicates interaction strength) have been successful to obtain a near optimal solution resulting into smaller test set to be considered. Motivated by such findings, we have developed a new test generation strategy, called Particle Swarm Test Generator (PSTG). In this paper, we discuss the design of PSTG and demonstrate our preliminary test size reduction results against other competing t-way strategies including IPOG, WHITCH, Jenny, TConfig, and TVG. © 2010 IEEE.

Information communication technology (ICT) enabling energy efficiency has been considered as the fastest way to reduce carbon CO 2 generation, while replacement energy may take decades to deploy. We start observations of electricity flow in the power grid and suggest a distributed optimization of electricity usage under a hierarchical structure and propose possible direction to facilitate the communication infrastructure of smart grid.

this paper is aimed at investigating the role of Space-Time Coding (STC) for target detection and time-delay estimation through MIMO radars with widely spaced antennas. To this end we formulate the waveform optimization problem as a constrained maximization of some detection-oriented figures of merit under an accuracy constraint. Interestingly, such an additional constraint deeply modifies the optimal transmit policy. We also offer closed-form formulas of the Fisher Information in target delay estimation as a function of the singular values of the code matrix. Numerical results validating the theoretical findings are also given.

We address the design of adaptive channel codes for the three-node relay channel. In order to make the code design feasible for wireless sensor-network (WSN) applications, we focus on the special case where only limited channel-state information is available for code adaptation. For this purpose we design distributed codes which feature a limited set of modes which are optimized to serve a certain range of channel conditions. As the results show, a good performance in terms of coverage and achievable rate is maintained compared to the case with perfect channel-state information. If the target application is spectrum sensing, the proposed scheme provides a feasible solution to improve the sensing performance and to reduce the latency due to its increased data rate compared to standard solutions.

this paper presents a development of the post compression rate-distortion optimization (PCRD-opt) algorithm in JPEG2000 used for optimal truncation (OT) rate control. the proposed treatment of PCRD-opt differs from the treatment given in the JPEG2000 standard and what is given in a number of publications, indicating an error in the published literature. the proposed algorithm is implemented in a complete JPEG2000 compression engine as well as the algorithm published in the JPEG2000 standard. the proposed algorithm gives a substantial performance gain, out performing the implementation given in the standard by 0.25-1 dB in PSNR on average, demonstrating that the method for PCRD-opt given in the standard is incorrect. the proposed algorithm is also compared to the JPEG2000 reference implementation, JasPer, and the popular Kakadu JPEG2000 compressor. the proposed algorithm provides equivalent performance results to both JasPer and Kakadu, indicating that the proposed PCRD-opt treatment provides correct OT of JPEG2000 compressed imagery.
