the paper presents an introductory optimization algorithm, which can be performed before a Java program is executed in a parallel system. Taking a sequential multi-threaded version of a Java program as input information, the aim of the parallel program optimization is to determine an initial distribution of objects on. virtual machines so as to decrease direct inter-object communication and balance loads of the virtual machines. the object placement optimization algorithm uses a graphical representation of control dependencies and data dependencies among methods in Java programs. these dependencies are discovered by an analysis of program byte code and stored in the form. of relevant macro/dataflow graphs. the placement optimization algorithm, tries to optimally assign the macro nodes to processors (JVMs) so as to reduce inter-processor communication overheads. the optimization method first does clustering of macro nodes on unlimited number of processors (logical JVMs) to reduce the execution time of the clustered nodes. Next, merging of the assigned clusters is performed to reduce the number of logical JVMs to the number of real processors. the presented approach is supported by a dynamic, on-line load balancing mechanism, which applies object migration as proposed in the ADAJ (Adaptive Distributed Applications in Java) project.

We describe our efforts to use source-level rewriting to optimize run-time program generators written in Jumbo, a run-time program generation system for Java. Jumbo is a compiler written in compositional style, which brings the advantage that any program fragment can be abstracted out and compiled to an intermediate form. these forms can be put together at run-time to build complete programs. this principle provides a high level of flexibility in writing program generators. However, this comes at the price of inefficient run-time compilation. Using source-level transformations, we optimize the run-time generation of byte code from fragments, achieving speedups of 5-15%. We discuss the optimization process and give several examples.

We have proposed a Web-based infrastructure for integrating element technologies of life cycle engineering (LCE) including simulation, optimization, and decision-making tools with a product life cycle model. A structural function modeling method named IDEFO is employed for defining the model. We also developed a format to describe the model by using XML that is known suitable for Web-based applications. Moreover, employing distributed object-oriented technologies, we have implemented an information infrastructure that can be deployed on the Web. Finally, a case study regarding a chemical product is provided to illustrate the usage of the system

this paper describes an extension of a method for designing products with built-in disassembly means developed in previous work, as applied to a realistic example of a desktop computer assembly. Given component geometries and revenues, the method simultaneously determines, through an optimization process, the spatial configuration of component, locator and fasteners such that the product can be most economically disassembled via a domino-like "self-disassembly" process triggered by the removal of one or a few fasteners. A multi-objective genetic algorithm is utilized to search for Pareto-optimal designs in terms of four objectives: 1) satisfaction of the distance specification among components, 2) efficient use of locators on components, 3) profit of overall disassembly process, and 4) mass fraction of retrieved components. the method is applied to a simplified model of Power Mac G4 cubereg, and the results inspired a modification to the current design that can improve the ease of disassembly

Recently, resource optimization (energy and material) and environmental issues in life-cycle context are taken very seriously by both the general public and government agencies. Also, some governments have set up official eco-labeling schemes, which are used to inform consumers of Eco (ecology and economic) design products. In the past, several environmental impact analyses and evaluation tools are significantly developed to apply on the Eco design products. However, these Eco design products are not favorable in the market place as expected even though they sound more environmental friendly and economical. this may be due to they are focused solely on environmental impact analysis without regarding to the customer need and the cost consideration. As a procedure to incorporate customer needs into product concepts in product planning, Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a proven methodology to achieve total customer satisfaction. therefore, a fuzzy theoretic modeling approach to the Eco QFD is developed and illustrated to aid the design team in choosing target levels for engineering characteristics based on the environmental concern in this research. Unlike two valued Boolean logic, fuzzy logic is multivalued. It deals with degrees of membership and degrees of truth. the Eco design product development problem was formulated as a fuzzy multi-objective model based on the QFD planning. this model not only considers the overall customer satisfaction, but also enterprise satisfaction with the environment committed to the product. With the interactive approach, the best balance between environmental satisfaction and overall customer satisfaction can be obtained. Finally, a case study illustrating the appliance of the proposed model is also given

An optimization study on thrust efficiency of exploding plasma in the magnetic thrust chamber for laser fusion rocket is performed by using a three-dimensional hybrid particle-in-cell code. Temporal evolution of plasma clouds expanding in a dipole magnetic field is examined. the integral-in-time picture of the exploding plasma shows a cone-like geometry. the dependences of thrust conversion efficiency eta and half-angle of the plasma expansion cone alpha on kappa (the parameter characterizes the interaction between the expanding plasma and the dipole field) are examined, and optimal values of alpha and kappa are found. the maximum thrust conversion efficiency is estimated to be about 70% from the simulation. In this paper, we compare the performance of Alamouti's space-time block coded MC-CDMA systems for indoor and outdoor realistic scenarios with zero forcing or minimum mean square error detection schemes. Two different configurations of the system are considered for the two scenarios. the different results obtained as well for indoor as for outdoor scenarios demonstrate that spatial diversity improves significantly the performance of MC-CDMA systems. then, Alamouti's STBC MC-CDMA schemes derive full benefit from the frequency and spatial diversities and can be considered as a very realistic and promising candidate for the air interface downlink of the 4th generation mobile radio systems. © 2004 IEEE.
