Zero-copy communication exchanges the messages among the buffers that are allocated and locked before the communication itself. this communication style fits into applications that the communication timings and the message sizes are known in its initialization phase. However, another application with non-deterministic messaging such as Web or parallel database can not fit into the style because the sizes and timings of its messages change at every communication. this paper proposes a new zero-copy communication style for these kinds of application, called active zero-copy, that receives messages without pre-allocated buffers. the performance evaluation with the active zero-copy compared with the conventional zero-copy, when the applications with non-deterministic messaging is applied, shows its efficiency

Model order reduction is necessary in many complex scientific and engineering applications. Among the methods for model reduction, those based on the SVD are well-known for their beneficial theoretical properties, though they require O(n 3 ) floating-point arithmetic operations, with n being in the range of 10 3 - 10 4 for many practical applications. In this paper we propose several high performance implementations of the Balanced Stochastic Truncation method for model reduction. the new routines carefully distribute the computations among the computational resources of a hybrid platform composed of one (or more) multicore CPU(s) and a manycore GPU. Our results show that model reduction of a large-scale problem with 9,669 state variables, which previously required the use of a cluster of computers, can now be carried out in the target platform in less than 25 minutes.

parallelism and Optimization are two disciplines that are used together in numerous applications. Solving complex problems in optimization often means to face complex search landscapes, what needs time-consuming operations. Exact and heuristic techniques are being used nowadays to get solutions to problems in mathematics, logistics, bioinformatics, telecommunications, and many other relevant fields. For these tasks it is mandatory to deal with cluster computing in many cases, multiprocessors, and even with computational grids. In this talk I will address the basic challenges of using parallel tools, software, and hardware for extending existing optimization procedures to work in a parallel environment. I will present some basic optimization algorithms, especially heuristic ones, and discuss the application of parallelism to them. Also, I will show how new techniques become possible due to parallelism, giving birth to a whole new class of algorithms and new research lines.

With the emergence of computational grids, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of available processing and storing resources available for parallel execution of large-scale compute and data intensive scientific applications. However, large computing power in itself is not sufficient for high performance computing (HPC). In this context, (application) partitioning and load balancing strategies play a critical role in meeting the high performance requirements and in achieving high processor utilization. In HPC applications such as molecular simulations, protein synthesis, drug design et cetera parallel loops constitute the greatest percentage of program parallelism. the degree to which parallelism can be exploited during parallel execution of a nested loop directly depends on partitioning and load balance, i.e., the number of iterations mapped onto each processor, between the different processors. thus, partitioning of parallel loops is of key importance for grid-based high performance scientific computing. Although a significant amount of work has been done in partitioning of iteration spaces of nested loops, both rectangular and non-rectangular iteration spaces, for homogeneous multiprocessor systems, the problem of partitioning of iteration spaces for heterogeneous systems has not been given enough attention so far. In this paper, we present a geometric approach for partitioning N-dimensional non-rectangular iteration spaces for optimizing performance on heterogeneous parallel processor systems. Speedup measurements for kernels (loop nests) of linear algebra packages, scientific applications such as climate modeling and literature are presented

parallel computing is the simultaneous use of multiple computer resources to solve a computational problem. In order to automatically execute a sequential program so that inherent parallelism could utilize the underlying multi-core platforms, program profiling is necessary to learn the control and dataflow dependency which is critical for predicting the parallelization feasibility and finding parallelism solutions. In literature, algorithms and tools have been designed for either dynamic or static program analysis in order to increase the accuracy and performance in discovering all aspects of the target program. However, memory and runtime overhead remain two challenge problems for program profiling. In this work, based on the PIN framework, we have designed and implemented a memory access pattern-based program profiling system for sequential program parallelization prediction. Validation results on seven SPEC 2006 benchmark programs show the effectiveness of proposed system on both memory usage and cpu time for target program dynamic profiling.

Heterogeneous network computing allows the development of a single complex application using a distributed network of machines; these machines may differ in terms of CPU and memory capacity and/or architecture and specialized functions. We present a modeling technique, based on generalized stochastic Petri nets (GSPNs), for the performance analysis of applications targeted to this class of systems (heterogeneous applications). We illustrate the use of the proposed technique by modeling and analyzing the CASA 3D-REACT heterogeneous application.

parallel simulation has the potential to accelerate the execution of simulation applications. However, developing a parallel discrete-event simulation from scratch requires an in-depth knowledge of the mapping process from the physical model to the simulation model, and a substantial effort in optimising performance. this paper presents an overview of the SPaDES (Structured parallel Discrete-Event Simulation) parallel simulation framework. We focus on the performance analysis of SPaDES/C++, an implementation of SPaDES on a distributed-memory Fujitsu AP3000 parallel computer. SPaDES/C++ hides the underlying complex parallel simulation synchronization and parallel programming details from the simulationist. Our empirical results show that the SPaDES framework can deliver good speedup if the process granularity is properly optimised.

this paper presents the study of how to accelerate CABAC encoding for emerging heterogeneous multimedia applications. the latest image and video compression standards such as JPEG2000 and H.264 both have adopted context adaptive binary arithmetic coding to achieve performance enhancement. However, CABAC requires high computing power. After investigating computational complexity of CABAC coding, firstly, instruction level acceleration is elaborated. Secondly, a configurable accelerator for CABAC encoding in multiple standards is proposed. Benchmarking performance and implementation cost is also addressed.

this paper presents a parameterizable, coarse grained, reconfigurable fabric model that attempts to maintain field programmable gate array (FPGA)-like programmability and computer aided design (CAD), with application specific integrated circuit (ASIC)-like power characteristics for digital signal processing (DSP) style applications. Using this model, architectural design space decisions are explored in order to define an energy-efficient fabric. the impact on energy and performance due to the variation of different parameters such as data width and interconnection flexibility has been studied. the multiplexer cardinality usage has also been studied by mapping some of the signal processing applications onto the fabric. the results point to the use of power optimized 32-bit width computational elements interconnected by low cardinality multiplexers like 4:1 multiplexers
