Traditionally, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software uses Message Passing Interface (MPI) to handle the parallelism over distributed memory systems. For a new developer, such as a student or a new employee, the barrier of entry can be high and more training is required for each particular software package, which slows down the research process on actual science. the Chapel programming language offers an interesting alternative for research and development of CFD applications. In this paper, the developments of two CFD applications are presented: the first one as an experiment by re-writing a 2D structured flow solver and the second one as writing from scratch a research 3D unstructured multi-physics simulation software. Details are given on both applications with emphasis on the Chapel features which were used positively in the code design, in particular to improve flexibility and extend to distributed memory. Some performance pitfalls are discussed with solutions to avoid them. the performance of the unstructured software is then studied and compared to a traditional open-source CFD software package programmed in C++ with MPI for communication (SU2). the results show that our Chapel implementation achieves performances similar to other CFD software written in C and C++, thus confirming that Chapel is a viable language for high-performance CFD applications.

the Grid seems to be everywhere, with announcements appearing almost every day of Grid products, sales, and deployments from major vendors. However, in spite of the popularity of the term, there is often confusion as to what the Grid is and what problems it solves. Is there any "there there" or is it all just marketing hype? In this talk, I will address these questions, describing what the Grid is, what problems it solves, and what technology has been developed to build Grid infrastructure and create Grid applications. I will review the current status of Grid infrastructure and deployment and give examples of where Grid technology is being used not only to perform current tasks better, but to provide fundamentally new capabilities that are not possible otherwise. © 2005 IEEE.

A parallel version of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is presented and implemented on a cluster of workstations. Even though our algorithm is general enough to be applied to a wide variety of problems, we used it to obtain optimal and/or suboptimal solutions to the well-known Traveling Salesman Problem. the proposed algorithm is implemented using the parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) library over a network of workstations. A master-slave paradigm is used to implement the proposed parallel/distributed Genetic Algorithm (PDGA), which is based on a distributed-memory approach. Tests were performed with clusters of 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 workstations, using several real problems and population sizes. Results are presented to show how the performance of the algorithm is affected by variations on the number of slaves, population size, mutation rate, and mutation interval. the results presented show the utility, versatility, efficiency and potential value of the proposed parallel and distributed Genetic Algorithm to tackle NP-complete problems of the same nature. Enterprise architects and information system designers need to understand and manage workflows, data flows, and social interactions to design tools and systems for well-coordinated organizational operations. However, the organizational-nature has drastically transformed over the recent years due to wide-scale use of new computing technologies. Disintegrated structures, large quantities of frequently-generated data, and dubious system and interaction boundaries are some of the obvious identifiers of a modern enterprise, where poorly designed coordination can lead to serious privacy risks. Old coordination modeling frameworks do not set well for the new organizational settings, and a need for alternative models and frameworks has been felt. In this paper, we propose a privacy-aware conceptual framework for understanding coordination by identifying and mapping work, data, and interaction patterns in organizational environments. these propositions intend to help practitioners in developing an updated understanding of the coordination that serves privacy needs, as well.

the syndrome decoding problem (SDP) is a security basis for code-based cryptographic algorithms such as the McEliece cryptosystem, which has been selected as a finalist for the third round of the post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standardization project organized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Information set decoding (ISD) is a general term for algorithms that efficiently solve SDPs based on combinatorial enumeration. In this paper, we focused on Dumer's algorithm, which is relatively lightweight among the ISD algorithms;and proposed a multi-parallel Dumer's algorithm optimized for computing devices that perform massively parallel processing. We implemented our algorithm on a GPU and tested it by solving some SDP instances in the decoding challenge hosted by Inria. We report that our algorithm first solved a 1161-dimensional SDP in the Goppa-McEliece setting in approximately 380 hours, which has a computational complexity of 2(52). Our results contribute to a more detailed security analysis for code-based cryptosystems.

With the continuous development of data-centric Internet applications, data management solutions for massive data have gradually become a new research direction in vector map rendering. the introduction of distributed "cloud computing" technology has continuously improved the storage and management of massive data. Supported by a large number of distributed systems, it provides normal services to the outside world, as well as fast data location services. the system has good performance in data storage efficiency, node load balancing and system scalability, and has an efficient data positioning mechanism. the basic idea of the system design draws on the hash algorithm and the consistent hash algorithm, and improves the scalability of the basic algorithm. through the three-tier layout: front-end server layer, consistent hash layer, data node layer, to maximize the consistency, availability, efficiency and scalability of the system.

Nowadays, many intrusion detection and tolerance systems have been proposed in order to detect attacks in both wired and wireless networks. Even if these solutions have shown some efficiency by detecting a set of complex attacks in wireless environments, they are unable to detect attacks using transaction bared traffic in wireless environments. In this context, we propose an intrusion detection and tolerance scheme that is able to monitor heterogeneous traffic and to detect and tolerate attacks targeting transaction based applications interoperating in wireless environments. A case study is given to illustrate the proposed system capabilities against a complex attack scenario targeting a multi-player wireless gaming service.

As processors and systems on chip in the embedded world increasingly become multicore, parallel programming remains a difficult, time-consuming and complicated task. End users who are not parallel programming experts have a need to exploit such processors and architectures, using high level programming languages, like Scilab or MATLAB. the ALMA toolset solves this problem: it takes Scilab code as input and produces parallel code for embedded multiprocessor systems on chip, using platform quasi-agnostic optimizations. the platform information is provided by an architecture description language designed for the purpose of a flexible system description as well as simulation. A hierarchical system description in combination with a parameterizable simulation environment allows fine-grained trade-offs between simulation performance and simulation accuracy.

Hardware performance counters are used as effective proxies to estimate power consumption and runtime. In this paper we present a performance counter-based power and performance modeling and optimization method, and use the method to model four metrics: runtime, system power, CPU power and memory power. the performance counters that compose the models are used to explore some counter-guided optimizations with two large-scale scientific applications: an earthquake simulation and an aerospace application. We demonstrate the use of the method using two power-aware supercomputers, Mira at Argonne National Laboratory and SystemG at Virginia Tech. the counter-guided optimizations result in a reduction in energy by an average of 18.28% on up to 32,768 cores on Mira and 11.28% on up to 128 cores on SystemG for the aerospace application. For the earthquake simulation, the average energy reductions achieved are 48.65% on up to 4,096 cores on Mira and 30.67% on up to 256 cores on SystemG.

Reducing the energy consumption of datacenters is critical for their scalability, sustainability, and affordability when hosting latency-critical applications. Prior work has focused on single-thread applications with a stable workload. Recently, multi-thread latency-sensitive services are widely used in current datacenters. However, the variability of user queries in these service makes existing schemes ineffective, leading to either QoS violations or higher energy consumption. In order to address this new problem, we propose Electro, a machine learning enhanced dynamic power management system. Electro consists of a query duration predictor and a query consolidating engine. the duration predictor can precisely predict the duration of each user query in different scenarios based on the pre-trained duration models. At runtime, according to the predicted duration, the query consolidating engine consolidates user queries accordingly to maximize the duration of the CPU idle states while guaranteeing the QoS. the longer each idle state is, the deeper low-power sleep states can the CPU enter. Our evaluation results on the latest Intel Xeon V4 CPU show that Electro reduces the energy consumption by 81.8% on average compared with the default OS scheduling, and by 14.4% on average compared with the state-of-the-art technique while achieving the 95%-ile latency target for latency-sensitive applications.
