the complexity of both parallel architectures and parallel applications poses several problems for the development of performance analysis and optimization tools. In this paper, we describe the motivations and the main aspects of the design of the Dynamic Probe Class Library (DPCL), an object based C++ class library that provides an infrastructure to reduce the cost of writing instrumentation for performance tools. Additionally, we present some of the performance tools built on top of DPCL, which demonstrate the power and flexibility of the library.

We present a "predictive" resource management algorithm for periodic tasks in real-time distributed applications that are characterized by significant execution-time uncertainties. the algorithm is predictive in the sense that it forecasts the timeliness behavior of the tasks during the resource allocation process and select allocations that yield the optimal forecasted timeliness. the algorithm uses statistical regression theory for predicting task timeliness. the performance of the predictive algorithm is studied by comparing with a nonpredictive resource management algorithm that uses heuristic rules for allocating resources. the experimental results indicate that the predictive algorithm outperforms the non-predictive algorithm when the workload shows fluctuating behavior.

this paper presents JECho, a Java-based communication infrastructure for collaborative high performance applications. JECho implements a publish/subscribe communication paradigm, permitting distributed concurrent sets of components to provide interactive service to collaborating end users via event channels. JECho's eager handler concept allows individual event subscribers to dynamically tailor event flows to adapt to runtime changes in component behaviors and needs, and to changes in platform resources. Benchmark results suggest that JECho may be used for building large-scale, high-performance event delivery systems which can efficiently adapt to changes in user needs or the environment using eager handlers.

All-to-all communication is one of the most dense collective communication patterns and occurs in many important applications in parallel and distributed computing. In this paper, we present a new all-to-all broadcast algorithm in multidimensional all-port mesh and torus networks. We propose a broadcast pattern which ensures a balanced traffic load in all dimensions in the network so that the all-to-all broadcast algorithm can achieve a very tight near-optimal transmission time. the algorithm also takes advantage of overlapping of message switching time and transmission time, and the total communication delay asymptotically matches the lower bound of all-to-all broadcast. Finally, the algorithm is conceptually simple, and symmetrical for every message and every node so that it can be easily implemented in hardware and achieves the near-optimum in practice.

A mapping algorithm for heterogeneous computing systems is proposed in this paper. this algorithm utilizes a new indicator-the relative cost-to obtain optimal mapping. the existing Min-min algorithm can be well explained under synergy of this new indicator. It is found that the Min-min algorithm leaves room for improvement because of its haste to reduce completion time by overlooking the impact of load balance. Our new algorithm retains the advantages of the Min-min algorithm and balances the load very well. It demonstrates the ability to generate good mapping in various heterogeneous environments.

parallel computation of unsteady, free-surface flow applications are performed using stabilized finite element method. the finite element formulations are written for fix meshes and are based on the Navier-Stokes equations and an advection equation governing the motion of the interface function. To increase the accuracy of the method, an interface-sharpening/mass conservation algorithm is designed. the method has been implemented on the CRAY T3E and also IBM SP/6000 using the MPI libraries. We show the effectiveness of the method in simulating complex 3D costal and hydraulic applications such as flow in open channels, wave formation and wave interaction with ships in motion. Some simulations are performed on unstructured meshes with 200 million tetrahedral elements.

In this paper we investigate G-commerce-computational economies for controlling resource allocation in Computational Grid settings. We define hypothetical resource consumers (representing users and Grid-aware applications) and resource producers (representing resource owners who "sell" their resources to the Grid). We then measure the efficiency of resource allocation under two different market conditions: commodities markets and auctions. We compare both market strategies in terms of price stability, market equilibrium, consumer efficiency, and producer efficiency. Our results indicate that commodities markets are a better choice for controlling Grid resources than previously defined auction strategies.

this paper describes a performance prediction model of parallel mark-sweep garbage collectors (GC) on shared memory multiprocessors. the prediction model takes the heap snapshot and memory access cost parameters (latency and occupancy) as inputs, and outputs performance of the parallel marking on any given number of processors. It takes several factors Mat affects performance into account: cache misses costs, memory access contention, and increase of misses by parallelization We evaluate this model by comparing the predicted GC performance and measured performance on two architecturally different shared memory machines: Ultra Enterprise 10000 (crossbar connected SMP) and Origin 2000 (hypercube connected DSM). Our model accurately predicts qualitatively different speedups on the two machines that occurred in one application, which turn out to be due to contentions on a memory node. Lit addition to performance analysis, applications of the proposed model include adaptive GC algorithm to achieve optimal performance based on the prediction. this paper shows the effect of automatic regulation of GC parallelism.

Sun has a diverse workstation and server product line suitable for high performance technical computing. In this talk we will present an overview of the architectural features of UltraSPARC(tm) processor based product families. the product families are built around three series of UltraSPARC processors, namely, S, I and E series. the S series processors (UltraSPARC I, II and III) are designed for highest performance. these are used in high end workstations and low, mid and high range server class systems. the I series processors (UltraSPARC IIi) are optimized for price/performance ratio. this has been achieved by a high level of system integration. the E series processors (UltraSPARC IIe) are targeted towards embedded applications and optimized to minimize energy consumption requirements. Supporting the processor implementations is a family of memory interconnects. We will describe the design characteristics of the Ultra Port Architecture(tm), Gigaplane(tm), Gigaplane XB(tm) and the Sun Fireplane(tm) system interconnects, respectively. Representative results of benchmarks such as SPEC CPU2000, Imbench and STREAM will be presented for various systems and discussed in the context of scalable parallel computing applications.

Many computes vision applications are computationally challenging especially when they need to meet real-time constraints. A major problem with special purpose systems is that they require the developers of image-processing applications to be aware of the low-level hardware design, making the task cumbersome. To avoid inflexible and expensive hardware designs, another possible alternative is a network of workstations (NOW) platform put together with off-the-shelf workstations and networking hardware. Still, one had to manually schedule an algorithm to the available processors of the NOW to make efficient use of the resources. However, this approach is time consuming and impractical for a vision system that must perform a variety of different algorithms, with new algorithms being constantly developed. Improved support for program development is absolutely necessary before the full benefits of parallel architectures can be realized for vision applications. Towards this goal, an automatic compile-time scheduler has been developed to schedule input tasks of vision applications with precedence constraints onto available processors. the scheduler exploits both spatial (parallelism) and temporal (pipelining) concurrency to make the best use of machine resources. Two important scheduling problems are addressed. First, given a task graph and a desired throughput, a schedule is constructed to achieve the desired throughput with the minimum number of processors. Second, given a task graph and a finite set of available resources, a schedule is constructed such that the throughput is maximized while meeting the resource constraints. Results from simulations show that the scheduler and proposed optimization techniques effectively tackle these problems by maximizing the processor utilization. A code generator has been developed to generate parallel programs automatically. the execution profiles of the resulting parallel programs demonstrate the feasibility of the scheduler. the to
