For economic reasons, a new trend in the development of distributed hard real-time systems is to rely on the use of Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) hardware and operating systems. As such systems often support critical applications, they must comply with stringent realtime and fault-tolerance requirements. the use Of COTS components in distributed critical systems is subject to two fundamental questions: are COTS components compatible with hard real-time constraints? axe they compatible with fault-tolerance constraints? this paper gives the current status of the HADES project, aiming at building a distributed run-time support for hard real-time fault-tolerant applications on top of COTS components. thanks to our experience in the design of HADES, we can give some information on the compatibility between COTS components and hard real-time and fault-tolerance constraints.

We present an integrated domain decomposition and data partitioning approach for irregular block-structured methods in scientific computing. We have demonstrated the method for an application related to Ocean modeling. Our approach gives better results than other methods that we have found in the literature. We have compared the domain decomposition part withthe Berger-Rigoutsos point clustering algorithm and the partitioning part with a multilevel method used in Metis, a bin packing method, and an inverse space filling curve algorithm. the partitions produced with our approach give lower run times, i.e. higher parallel efficiency, for our application than all the other partitions we have tried. Moreover, the integrated approach gives a possibility to further improve the parallel efficiency compared to doing the decomposition and partitioning in two separate steps.
Executing parallelapplications across distributed networks introduces the problem of fault tolerance. A viable solution for fault tolerance must keep overhead manageable and not compromise the high performance object...

this paper examines implementations of a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) on bus-based shared memory (SM) and on distributed memory (DM) multiprocessor systems. the goal has been to optimize HW and SW architectures in order to obtain the fastest response possible. Prototyping parallel MLP algorithms for up to 8 processing nodes withthe DM as well as SM memory was done using CSP-based TRANSIM tool. the results of prototyping MLPs of different sizes on various number of processing nodes demonstrate the feasible speedups, efficiency and time responses for the given CPU speed, link speed or bus bandwidth.

this paper describes an infrastructure that enables transparent development of image processing software for parallel computers. the infrastructure's main component is an image processing library containing operations capable of running on distributed memory MIMD-style parallel hardware. Since the library has a programming interface identical to that of a familiar sequential image processing library, the parallelism is completely hidden from the user. All library functions are based on an abstract parallel image processing machine (APIPM), introduced in this paper. To guide the process of automatic parallelization and optimization, a performance model is defined for operations implemented using APIPM instructions. Experiments show that for realistic image operations performance predictions are highly accurate. these results suggest the the infrastructure's core forms a powerful basis for automatic parallelization and optimization of complete applications.

the highly distributed computing plants planned for deployment aboard modem naval ships will serve real-time, mission-critical applications. the high-availability requirements of the distributedapplications targeted for these platforms require mechanisms to rapidly recover from system faults (e.g., battle damage). Providing network fault recovery mechanisms that support rapid recovery in the network infrastructure used to compose these systems is critical. this paper examines how metrics used for general network performance analysis can be used to analyze fault recovery performance. A methodology for applying these metrics is presented, A testing toolset that implements the metrics and complies withthe testing methodology is presented. Finally, test data collected using the toolset is presented to show the utility of the metrics and testing methodology for evaluating network fault recovery performance.
