this paper characterizes the development of modular branching structures that satisfy three assumptions: (a) subapical branching, meaning that new branches can be created only near the apices of the existing branches, (b) finite number of module types and states, and (c) absence of interactions between coexisting components of the growing structure. these assumptions are captured in the notion of subapical bracketed deterministic L-systems without interactions (sBDOL-systems). We present the biological rationale for sBDOL-systems and prove that it is decidable whether a given BDOL-system is subapical or not. In addition, using the assumption that modules, once created, continue to exist, we show that (propagating) sBDOL-systems are too weak to generate acrotonic and mesotonic branching structures, which are often observed in nature. their development must therefore be controlled by more involved mechanisms, overriding at least one of the assumptions (a-c) above. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

Federated SPARQL queries give unified answers from multiple and distributed SPARQL endpoints. A good example may be the collection of stops from different transport companies in the same city to create a route planning application. the performance of the evaluation of these types of queries is usually poor, a fact that makes difficult their use in real-life applications that need good performance requirements. In this paper we present a preliminary analysis on the improvement that can be achieved by using the graph clause in federated SPARQL queries. the main goal is to reduce the search space of such queries by setting the NAMED graph to the graph pattern where the corresponding patterns should be evaluated. We perform a preliminary comparison between a federated query and a rewriting that uses systematically the graph clause. these experiments show that the inclusion of the graph clause may only improve performance of query evaluation between 5% and 10%. these early findings suggest that, although the graph clause may indeed play a role in speeding up federated SPARQL queries, hurdles are yet to be overcome when using the graph clause as named graphs are semantically ambiguous.

We address a. version of the set-cover problem where we do not know the sets initially (and hence referred to as covert) but we can query an element to find out which sets contain this element as well as query a set to know the elements. We want to find a small set-cover using a minimal number of such queries. We present a Monte Carlo randomized algorithm that approximates an optimal set-cover of size OPT within O(log N) factor with high probability using O(OPT . log(2) N) queries where N is the number of elements in the universal set. We apply this technique to the network discovery problem that involves certifying all the edges and non-edges of an unknown n-vertices graph based on layered-graph queries from a minimal number of vertices. By reducing it to the covert set-cover problem we present an O(log(2) n)-competitive Monte Carlo randomized algorithm for the covert version of network discovery problem. the previously best known algorithm has a competitive ratio of Omega(root n log n) and therefore our result achieves an exponential improvement.

Models are placed by modeling paradigm at the center of development process. these models are represented by languages, like UML the language standardized by the OMG which became necessary for development. Moreover the ontology engineering paradigm places ontologies at the center of development process, in this paradigm we find OWL (the description language adopted by a great community of users) the principal language for knowledge representation. the bridging between UML and OWL appeared on several regards such as the classes and associations. In this paper, we propose an approach based graph transformation and registered in the MDA architecture for the automatic generation of OWL ontologies from UML class diagrams. the transformation is based on transformation rules;the level of abstraction in these rules is close to the application in order to have usable ontologies.

the graph rewriting calculus is an extension of the p-calculus, handling graph like structures rather than simple terms. the calculus over terms is naturally generalized by using unification constraints in addition to the standard p-calculus matching constraints. the transformations are performed by explicit application of rewrite rules as first class entities. the possibility of expressing sharing and cycles allows one to represent and compute over regular infinite entities. We propose in this paper a reduction strategy for the graph rewriting calculus which aims at maintaining the sharing information as long as possible in the terms. the corresponding reduction relation is shown to be confluent and complete w.r.t. the small-step semantics of the graph rewriting calculus.
