the contextualistic account for the semantic behaviour of the term "know" - a position labelled as "epistemic contextualism" - combined with the widely accepted idea that "know" is a factive verb seems to lead to a very unpleasant conclusion: epistemic contextualism is inconsistent. In Sect. 1 we first examine some aspects of the epistemological meaning of the contextualist semantics of "know", then in Sect. 2 we sketch the problem which leads to the supposed inconsistency of epistemic contextualism and in Sect. 3 we analyse some solutions that have been proposed to solve the problem which are, in our view, unsatisfactory. In Sect. 4 we present our attempt of solution. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

LEMA (Learning Environment for modeling Abilities) is an ICT based tool developed in order to promote students' modeling abilities such as developing explanations of phenomena based on microscopic models, predicting the outcome of new phenomena and revising explanations in the light of experimental evidence. It is developed for the context of self study. In a prior study, we have reported that students learning with LEMA showed statistically significant difference in their learning outcomes on a modeling ability based test than the control group. While we know that LEMA helped develop students modeling skills, the prior study did not address how it helped or why. In order to gain insight into this, in this study we investigate the different paths that different learners take as they interact with LEMA. using screen capture logs of students' interaction with LEMA, we characterize the difference in behavior between students who score low and students who score high in a modeling based post test. We find that in spite of the fact that the total time spent by all students while interacting with LEMA is the same, the duration of time spent on each feature of LEMA and the action taken within, varies for high and low scorers

the complexity of tasks and problems in the management of databases requires the development of tools for supporting database experts. For instance, in the database administration area, when problems occur, the database administrator (DBA) is frequently the first person blamed. Most DBAs work in a fire-fighting mode and have little opportunity to plan ahead or be proactive. they must be constantly ready to analyze and correct failures based on a large set of procedures. In addition, they are continually readjusting these procedures and developing practices to manage a multitude of specific situations that differ from the generic situation by some few contextual elements. these practices have to deal with these contextual elements in order to solve the problem at hand. this paper proposes to use "contextual Graphs" formalism to improve existing procedures used in database administration. Up to now, this improvement is achieved by a DBA through practices that adapt procedures to the context in which tasks should be performed and the incidents appear. this work present a new version of the contextual graph platform as a basis for designing and implementing a context-based intelligent assistant system for supporting database administrators.

this document reports a public exhibition organized during the French National Days of Archaeology, that is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration between archaeologists and computer scientists, centered on the immersive virtual reality platform Immersia, a node of the European Visionair project. this public exhibition had three main goals: (i) presentating our interdisciplinary collaboration, (ii) communicating on the scientific results of this collaboration, and (iii) offering an immersive experience in the past for visitors. this paper presents the scientific context of the event, its organization, and a discussion on feedbacks.

Designing in an interdisciplinary context is challenging, and it is even more so when it has to be done remotely. For such remote interdisciplinary designing, we propose video prototypes as artifacts for supporting the interaction design process. In this paper, we present a case study where we have successfully used video prototypes for collaboratively designing a modeling tool. this tool is supposed to provide Dialogue Design Support for creating multimodal user interfaces. the new and important aspect of this case study was using video prototypes for joint interactive designing done remotely, and also between disciplines. © 2012 IEEE.

the unpredicted growth and high user acceptance of social networks motivates the need for powerful and flexible modeling tools that can support analysis and further improvement of these platforms. In this paper we introduce an agent-based distributed modeling framework that is capable of simultaneously simulating and emulating user behaviour in social networks. this framework is independent of the underlying technology and can thus be utilized to study dynamic behaviour in a variety of settings. It constitutes a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration based on its technological conception, which is outlined in this paper together with a first proof-of-concept trial in context with a large social network in Southern America. © 2010 IEEE.

the paper presents the results of a comprehensive research program on tsunamiinduced forces on infrastructure located in coastal areas. this research project is the result of an interdisciplinary investigation (coastal and structural engineering) which spanned over the past five years which included field data reconnaissance missions, as well as analytical, experimental and numerical modeling of extreme hydrodynamic forces on buildings and their component structural elements. the purpose of this research and engineering effort is to help elucidate the complex hydrodynamic mechanisms of impact of such extreme loadings on buildings and to properly quantify loads and further derive and propose new formulations for the design of structures located in the vicinity of the shoreline in tsunami-prone coastal areas. the research is particularly important in the Canadian context due to the significant risk of tsunami attack, particularly along the coastline of Western Canada (British Columbia).

We propose ontology based knowledge modeling (OKM) that can support to provide the two-step personalized services for the end users using network knowledge. the two-step personalization services are consisted of service recommendation step and contents recommendation step. To achieve this, in this paper, we classify network knowledge and build ontology to represent them including user profiles and user's preferences. Furthermore, we propose the efficient functions of learner and recommender. Learner makes the user service usage model which consists of {context, services} pairs. Recommender is consisted of service recommender and contents recommender for supporting two-step personalization.

Adaptation is a key feature of e-learning systems. the educational process performed by the support of e-learning systems should be carried out taking into account the cognitive and other particular characteristics of the students, of the teachers and of the environments. However, this adaptation is not a simple process. It implies the conjunction of technical and pedagogical issues. this paper introduces a solution to support adaptation in the context of an Educational modeling Languages (EML). EMLs have been conceived to allow us the modeling of learning units, enabling the expression of different pedagogical approaches. Eventually, these models are intended to control and support the development of the corresponding learning units.
