In 2003, based on the work done by the OUNL on educational modeling language, IMS-LD was released and brought to the research community a new era in the design of learning activities. Six years later, IMS-LD is no longer evolving while facing an increasing number of critiques. the specification is still not implemented by any leading brands in the e-learning industry. the current development of new IMS specifications offers a window of opportunity to rethink IMS-LD. After discussing IMS-LD, trying to understand the existing critiques and analyzing the new technical context, this paper proposes the guidelines for the creation of this new learning design specification. this specification would be split in two specifications satisfying both the instructional designers and the learning platform developers and vendors. the specification optimized to learning platform vendors, called simple learning design 2.0 will be designed to ease the deployment of the learning design concepts in the existing learning management systems. SLD 2.0 is currently developed in the context of the SynergiC3 project.

Urbanization often causes environmental degradation and harms human health in developing countries. the study aims to develop a predictive model to investigate the interaction between urbanization and surface water quality. By using remote sensing image interpretation techniques, the dynamic of urban expansion in land use and land utility is qualitatively described. Spatial patterns of surface water quality are evaluated by using a Geographic Information System tool (ArcView [GIS 3.2, ESRI, Redlands, CA, USA]) based on field samples and laboratory measurements. Based on social welfare maximization theory, the urban expansion model is developed to simulate surface water environmental response to urbanization related to different socioeconomic situations. the model is applied as a case study in Xi'an, China, from 1996 to 2003. the simulated result indicates that Xi'an would delay the completion of its urbanization process until after 2021. the model is proved to be theoretically and practically valuable for environmental fate assessment to determine relationship between water pollutants and the environmental factors. In this context, the information presented here may be useful in environmental forensic investigations involving multiple sources and complex urban settings.

the main advantage to interdisciplinary professional practice is that it can produce novel product designs and problem solutions. However, it requires knowledge sharing and integration to leverage this potential. this paper reports on a study with a method of conceptual analysis to elicit, analyse and compare conceptual models used by individual researchers, with the ultimate aim to facilitate researchers in sharing and integrating their conceptual notions. We build on an earlier study by extending an existing conceptual model with conceptual notions from two additional researchers from an interdisciplinary research project. the results of the present study suggest that the time costs of adding more information to the existing model diminish with each addition to the existing model, and that the method of conceptual analysis can validly represent researchers' conceptual notions. Furthermore, our results offer some indication that conceptual analysis can reduce transaction costs related to grounding.

With the increasing availability of mobile devices and their usage by many different kinds of users, the context used by an application on this kind of device, in no longer static. the changes in context can have different kinds of impact on the user interface. In this paper, we refine our earlier work on the specification of context information and its effects within the task model, a model that is used in the earliest stages in the design of interactive applications. We define the different levels on which context can influence the user interface and how the influence on several levels can be represented in the task model. the details are discussed using a case study.

In this paper we describe our experience in introducing psychoanalytic observational studies in a post-graduate university MA course in Psychoanalytic Observational Studies at the Institute for Research and Further Education in Vienna. the course ran from October 2003 to 2006, with 25 participants. this new application of psychoanalysis in the field of education aims at helping teachers to increase their educational and psychological competence. Central to the learning outcome is the study of how relationships are formed in the context of learning and teaching. Successful participants will increase their capacity to recognize and deal with the social aspects of teaching relationships, as well as learning to recognize and handle transference phenomena within work situations. We describe our own experiences teaching this course as well as coping with the particular challenges emerging from the fact that most of our participants had little or no experience of personal psychotherapy or psychoanalysis. the experiences in the observational seminars, work discussion and application groups are discussed. the students’ feedback on their learning experience is also examined. Finally, we describe a forthcoming research project studying the ‘personality development and learning experiences’ of our students, granted by the IPA Research Advisory Board. In order to do this we will compare this postgraduate university course with a two-years experience of teaching infant observation to teachers in training at the University of Vienna between 1997 and 2000. In order to help address problems of information overload in digital imagery task domains, we have developed an interactive approach to the capture and reuse of image context information. Our framework models different aspects of the relationship between images and the domain tasks that they support by monitoring the interactive manipulation and annotation of task-relevant imagery. In particular, a strong focus on task context serves to ground image annotations in domain specific goals. this contrasts with prevalent annotation schemes that focus on what individual images contain but that provide no context for which, if any, of those aspects are important to users. Our work attempts to leverage a measure of the user's intentions with regard to tasks that they address. We analyze human-computer interaction information that enables us to infer why image contents are important in a particular context and how specific images have been used to address particular domain goals.

To study and simulate cognitive development, it is useful to find a natural domain where many cognitive functions are needed and, but where the complexity of the environment and task is reasonable. We suggest that childrens games constitute a suitable domain. the ability to play is a very fundamental part of children's daily life and it is crucial for the future development of our behaviors in Bekoff and Byers (1998). In the individual domain, the coordination of the body is an important feature of play. When a child plays, it refines its motor and sensory skills and develops more advanced movement patterns e.g. in running or cycling. When playing among other individuals, cognitive functions for social interactions and coordination and emotional control are also used. Trafton et al. (2003) programmed a robot to model a 3-4 year old child playing hide and seek. the robot moves around in their laboratory and tries to hide behind different objects and learn which hiding places what are good ones. Games like hide and seek, tag and other popular children's games were used. By bringing the best developmental and learning models together, hopes to find out more about the mechanisms of cognitive development

this paper focuses on conceptual modeling of multichannel, context aware Web applications, and in particular, proposes some solutions conceived within the WebML method. WebML is a conceptual model for data-intensive Web applications, which already offers some constructs for one-to-one personalization and multi-channel deliver. In this paper, we introduce some new extensions that allow representing a context model at data level, and exploit it at hypertext level for offering context-aware, customized services and contents, accessible through multiple channels. © 2004 IEEE.
