Based on Desktop PC, many feed-formula systems have been developed. It is expensive to be widely applied. the regularly users are only some advance culturists and professional breed technicians. A general purpose PDA-based feed-formula system has been designed and developed. the framework structure and function modules of the system were introduced. the development and operating environment were indicated. An embedded database middleware was designed and implemented in order to promote developing efficiency and decrease its complexity. Two updating ways, storage card updating and network updating, were adopted by this system. To cut down the unnecessary burden of reinstallation and reconfigure of software on users, the automatic installing has been implemented. the system has been compared with those counterparts based on Desktop PC. the result shows that stabilize and practical feed-formula system can be developed based on PDA. Characterized by easy to operate, cheap and light to be taken along this system is very suitable for the small and medium scale culturists and breed technicians from feed enterprises.

In this paper, we describe the techniques that have been implemented in the IBM TestaRossa (TR) Just-in-Time(JIT) compiler to safely perform aggressive code patching and collect accurate profiles in the context of a Java application employing multiple threads and dynamic class loading and unloading. Previous work in these areas either did not account for the synchronization cost of safely or dynamic class loading/unloading effects in a heavily multithreaded program or did not consider how different patching techniques may be required for different platforms where instruction cache coherence guarantees vary. We evaluate the space and time overhead to make our profiling framework correct, showing that privatizing the profiling variables to achieve correctness impacts execution time only minimally but it can grow the stack frames for profiled methods by less than 15% on average for the SPECjvm98 and SPECjbb2000 benchmarks. Since methods are profiled for only a brief time and the stack frames themselves are not large, we do not consider this growth to be prohibitive. the techniques reported in this paper are implemented in the 1.5.0 release of the IBM Developer Kit for Java targeting 12 different processor-operating system platforms.

this paper describes the design and implementation of a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for the layered network topology and the connections in an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network managed by the ATM Network Management system (NMS). there are physical and logical networks in an ATM network. In addition, the ATM connections, which are ATM Permanent Virtual Connections (PVCs), have two kinds of Virtual Path (VP) and Virtual Channel (VC) connections. their routing information in an ATM network is very complicated because of the concept of the layered network and the virtual connections. In addition, with the complicated routing information of the ATM PVCs, it is hard for the operator to perform the performance and fault management functions for the ATM PVCs. therefore, we analyzed the layered network in an ATM network, the routing information and the management functions for the ATM PVC. We also obtained the user requirements for the GUI through interviews of the operators of the ATM network. To design a user-friendly GUI for the routing information, we defined the sub-network information unit to display the routing information. We also integrated the management functions for the ATM PVCs into the GUI with the unit by analyzing the requirements for performing the management functions. We created a user's task flow to perform them with the unit and implement the GUI for the ATM PVC routing information. Also, according to the user requirements, we implemented the GUI with JAVA in order to be independent from the operating systems (OSs) such as UNIX, Windows and others. By using this GUI, network operators can easily recognize the layered network and the routing information and effectively perform the performance and fault management functions for the ATM PVC.

this paper presents design, implementation, and testing of NAIS, an artificial immune system for the protection of computer networks. Inspired by the biological innate immune system, NAIS consists of a collection of digital macrophages that scan the network for dangerous non-self processes, and kill them. NAIS is based on the observation that all significant network attacks are preceded by preparatory small-scale intrusions meant to gather the necessary information --- information on servers and operating systems, logins, weak passwords, ill-installed or poorly maintained services, etc. this information is used to bypass the network's defense barriers --- access controls, firewalls --- and to gain access to the machine before it is attacked. Such preparatory intrusions do not generate new processes, however the subsequent, actual intrusion will. Such processes will be recognized as non-self by the digital macrophages run by NAIS, and killed right away, thus defusing the attack. Telling illegal new processes from legal ones is a difficult matter, and amounts to providing a strong definition of non-self process. Our testing of NAIS proved our definition to be quite effective in protecting networks of one-service computers.

Window systems are the primary mediator of user input and output in modern computing systems. they are also a commonly used interprocess communication mechanism. As a result, they play a key role in the enforcement of security policies and the protection of sensitive information. A user typing a password or passphrase must be assured that it is disclosed exclusively to the intended program. In highly secure systems, global policies concerning information flow restrictions must be honored. Most window systems today, including X11 and Microsoft Windows, have carried forward the presumptive trust assumptions of the Xerox Alto from which they were conceptually derived. these assumptions are inappropriate for modern computing environments. In this paper, we present the design of a new trusted window system for the EROS capability-based operating system. the EROS Window system (EWS) provides robust traceability of user volition and is capable (with extension) of enforcing mandatory access controls. the entire implementation of EWS is less than 4, 500 lines, which is a factor of ten smaller than previous trusted window systems such as Trusted X, and well within the range of what can feasibly be evaluated for high assurance. © 2000 by the USENIX Association All Rights Reserved.

this paper presents the proposed risk-based compliance assessment models of Personal Flotation Devices. they constitute a suggested approval process of personal flotation devices (PFDs) based on the ability of PFDs to save lives as a result of marine events. Ayyub and Wilcox (2000) initially suggested a risk-based compliance approval methodology for PFDs for the U. S. Coast Guard. the methodology was revised in this study to include dependency among various events that lead to life saving. It provides a formal structure and consistency to an approval process of new and novel engineering designs. this methodology can also aid in identifying critical factors for evaluating the minimum level of performance necessary for approval. the methodology complements and enhances current industry standards, and could result in significant safety improvements through the implementation of new technologies and designs. this methodology can be applied to the approval of other new and innovative classes of engineering designs and designs for special needs. Also, it encourages creativity in system design, and provides an overall performance measure allowing for tradeoff analysis. this methodology can ultimately provide guidance in the development of future standards. the risk-based compliance assessment models consist of three recommended computational procedures for inherently buoyant, inflatable and hybrid PFDs. A special panel of the US. Coast Guard and the Underwriter Laboratories Inc. (UL) is currently evaluating this methodology for a potential formulation and adoption as a UL standard.

Fast and secure distributed read-only file system

Internet users increasingly rely on publicly available data for everything from software installation to investment decisions. Unfortunately, the vast majority of public content on the Internet comes with no integrity or authenticity guarantees. this paper presents the self-certifying read-only file system, a content distribution system providing secure, scalable access to public, read-only data. the read-only file system makes the security of published content independent from that of the distribution infrastructure. In a secure area (perhaps off-line), a publisher creates a digitally signed database out of a file system's contents. the publisher then replicates the database on untrusted content-distribution servers, allowing for high availability. the read-only file system avoids performing any cryptographic operations on servers and keeps the overhead of cryptography low on clients, allowing servers to scale to a large number of clients. Measurements of an implementation show that an individual server running on a 550-Mhz Pentium III with FreeBSD can support 1,012 connections per second and 300 concurrent clients compiling a large software package.

In this paper, we describe our currently ongoing work to build object-oriented distributed middleware for networked home appliances, which are executed on commodity operating systems. the current prototype has adopted HAVi(Home Audio/Video Interoperability) as distributed middleware for home appliances. We have implemented HAVi in Java, and has adopted Linux as an operating system. Since Java and Linux axe running on a variety of platforms, our software can be ported to a target system without modification. therefore, it becomes easy to develop a new application on a standard PC platform. the paper describes the design issues and the implementation of our system. We have actually implemented several programs that emulate home appliances such as a digital television. Also, we present some experiences with the current prototype.
