Energy efficiency has been known as the most important problem in wireless sensor networks. As a classic clustering-based protocol LEACH do a tremendous contribution on energy, efficiency. But it has some drawbacks that the cluster head may not well distributed, and the number of nodes in each cluster is distributed unequally. In this paper we proposed a new protocol BCBE (Balanced Cluster and Balanced Energy), the advantage of this routing protocol is we only have to know the location information of two nodes to locate other sensor nodes. the key feature of the protocol is: balanced cluster, balanced energy dissipation, hierarchical routing and load balance. Simulation results show that the proposed routing protocol can achieve longer network lifetime than LEACH.

At present, the OSs (Operating system) employed for WSN (wireless sensor networks) are either satisfied with only one or two application classes or unsuitable for strict-constrained resources. In view of a variety of WSN applications, there is a need of developing a self-adaptable and self-configurable embedded real-time operating system (RTOS). this paper presents a resource-aware and low-power RTOS termed LIMOS. this kernel adopts a component-based three-level system architecture: action (system operation), thread (component) and event (container). In accordance, a predictable and deterministic two-level scheduling mechanism is proposed: 'non pre-emption priority based' high level scheduling for events and 'preemptive priority-based' low level scheduling for threads. Employing the concepts of LINDA language, LIMOS provides a simplified tuple space and alight IN/OUT system primitive pair to achieve system communication and synchronization. LIMOS is capable of self-adapting to run on two operation modes: event-driven and multi-threading, with respect to the application diversity. the performance evaluation and comparison shows LIMOS has tiny resource consumption and is fit for the real-time applications. Currently LIMOS has been ported on several hardware platforms for different WSN applications.

Network neighborhoods are a key communication abstraction in sensor networks, allowing sensor nodes to collect and aggregate sensor data from nearby other nodes. In many applications, multi-hop neighborhoods of several nodes overlap, such that nodes participate in many neighborhoods, having to contribute their data items to all containing neighborhoods. We consider two orthogonal approaches to efficiently support this data aggregation problem. A push-based approach, where each node floods its data item in a multi-hop neighborhood, and a pull-based approach, where each node collects data from nodes in a multi-hop network neighborhood using a spanning tree. Our goal is to identify situations where one approach outperforms the other. For this, we Implement these protocols in TOSSIM, study overhead and yield as a function of the fraction of nodes in the network that perform data aggregation over a multi-hop neighborhood, and report our findings.

Improvement of localization technique for wireless sensor nodes is an important challenge to realize free applications of wireless sensor networks. Effective utilization of range data is necessary because constraints on their hardware resources are very hard and specific on their situations. Utilization or wireless connection strengths (WCS) Is efficient strategy;however, localization performances of conventional methods using a WCS are not stable because the amount of range data varies depending on network topology and the methods can use only "single" WCS. In this paper, two types or range data fusions arc proposed to advance the effective utilization of range data. In the first, "multiple' WCS are utilized by the range-inequality-based localization method to allow a localization on free network topology. In the second, both known ranges and range inequalities are utilized to allow free node design suited for each situation.

In this paper, we present an ultra low power IEEE802.15.4 module and its applications for batteryless wireless sensors. We realized the module with very low power consumption. the sleep current Including LCD is 3.5uA and average current is 5uA with 10 second data sampling period this module is expected to work with two AA batteries for 10 years or longer. We tested some batteryless wireless sensor applications, including a solar power generator, a vibration power generator and a micro wind power generator. In the solar power generator test, we realized that continuous operation under ordinary office environment with a small panel sized 53mm x 50mm.

We introduce a novel sensing device named "three-dimensional capture sheet (3DCS)." the cloth-like sheet measures its own 3D shape with no external equipment. It has many potential applications such as 3D modeling, size and shape measurement, wearable motion capture, tactile sensor, and so on. It consists of a lattice structure inside of the sheet, and each link of the structure has a sensor chip consisting of a triaxial accelerometer and a triaxial magnetometer. the sensor chip measures the gravity and the Earth's magnetic field to obtain the link posture. After all the link postures are obtained, the whole shape of the sheet is reconstructed by combining them. Additionally, owing to redundancy of the problem, the estimation error (caused by random noise, a distorted magnetic field, and so on) can be corrected. the feasibility and stability of the shape estimation algorithm are confirmed through simulations, and the prototype is presented.

Monitoring human activities using wearable wireless sensor nodes has the potential to enable many useful applications for everyday situations. the deployment of a compact and computationally efficient grammatical representation of actions reduces the complexities involved in the detection and recognition of human behaviors in a distributed system. In this paper, we introduce a road map to a linguistic framework for the symbolic representation of inertial information for physical movement monitoring. Our method for creating phonetic descriptions consists of constructing primitives across the network and assigning certain primitives to each movement. Our technique exploits the notion of a decision tree to identify atomic actions corresponding to every given movement. We pose an optimization problem for the fast identification of primitives. We then prove that this problem is NP-Complete and provide a fast greedy algorithm to approximate the solution. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our phonetic model on data collected from three subjects.

It is very important to maximize the lifetime of Wireless sensor Networks (WSN) operated on limited power. In order to improve the energy efficiency and prolong the network lifetime, a new clustering algorithm based on the optimum one-hop distance is presented. the relationship among the energy consumption, the device electronic energy and the one-hop transmission distance is analyzed, and then the inverse ratio of the energy consumption increment to the cube of the optimal one-hop distance is gained. So, the clustering algorithm based on the optimal one-hop distance is given to reduce energy consumption. All sensor nodes are divided into different static clusters based on the optimum one-hop distance, and the distance between the fore-and-aft adjacent duster heads equals or approximates to the optimum one-hop distance, which reduces the energy consumption for inter-cluster communication. At the same time, cluster head acts continuously as local control center and will not be replaced by the candidate cluster head until it almost exhausts its energy supply, which can lessen energy consumption for establishing the new cluster head. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm achieves good effect to prolonging the system lifetime.

Water environment monitoring system based on wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consists of three parts., data monitoring nodes, date video base station and remote monitoring center. For the sake of realizing to monitor large range waters such as reservoir, wetland, lake, river and ocean etc, the monitoring system has the Junction of perception, acquisition, processing and transmission for video-information in key areas and various water environment parameters, such as water temperature, PH, turbidity, electric conductivity, dissolved oxygen and so on. As the gateway between those data monitoring nodes and CDMA network, the data video base station is communication center in the monitoring network. Based on ARM-DSP double processors architecture, the dale video base station for water environment monitoring is studied and its software and hardware is designed in this paper. Moreover, by means of ZigBee and CDMA wireless transmission technology, the base station realizes data bidirectional communication between the sensor networks and the remote monitoring center. It well meets the need of remote real time water environment monitoring system and also has wide application prospect in industrial control, smart home, medical telemetry and intelligent traffic, etc.

Showing functional correctness by simulation before implementation, and preserving it by automated code generation, is extremely useful to reduce the development time for an embedded application. this is even more true for wireless sensor networks, since their nodes often provide very rudimentary debugging facilities, and sufficiently large networks for realistic analysis may be expensive to deploy. While this approach, also known as model-based design, is becoming quite standard for several domains that have similar constraints as wireless sensor networks, such as automotive electronics, there is a lack of tools for this purpose in the WSN world. In order to fill this gap, in this paper we present a framework (based on Simulink, Stateflow and embedded Coder) in which an engineer can create sensor network components (both at the application and at the protocol level) that can be used as building blocks to model, simulate and automatically generate code for different underlying platforms and operating systems. © IEEE.
