In quality management In an assembly plants it is very important to verify whether workers are following instructions or not. However, it has been considered there is no perfect way to do it. Generally, most assembly processes have steps to check quality and work in former processes. However, there are some cases which are difficult to be verified in later processes whether operations were done according to instructions or not. For example, to fasten some parts to other part with some screws, it is necessary to screw in diagonal order. However, it is not easy to judge from finished pieces whether operations were done in diagonal order. thereupon, we have been developing a system to improve quality of industrial products. this system employs terrestrial magnetism sensors and accelerometers to oversee motions of workers, and these sensors are attached to their arm/hand or tools. We have done an experiment to measure workers' motions with them in an actual car assembly plant. In this paper, we discuss its result and how sensor's output generated when operations were done in correct order differs the one generated when operations were done in incorrect order.

this paper presents the evaluation of the prototype of an integrated smart microsensor system that has been developed to monitor the motion and vital signs of humans in various environments. Integration of radio frequency transmitter (RF) technology with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor/micro electro mechanical systems (CMOS/ MEMS) microsensors is required to realize the wireless smart microsensors system. the essential RF components such as a voltage controlled RF-CMOS oscillator (VCO), spiral inductors and an integrated antenna have been fabricated and evaluated experimentally. the fabricated RF transmitter and integrated antenna were packaged with subminiature series A (SMA,) connectors, respectively. For the impedance (50 Omega) matching, a bond-wire type inductor was developed. Integrated techniques for the RF transmitter by CMOS compatible processes have been successfully developed. After matching, the measured emission power at distance of 5m from RF transmitter was 37dBm (76.1dB mu V/m). the radiation patterns for the prototype of smart microsensor is close approximately an isotropic antenna. Also, for the 300-MHz band application, the prototype of smart microsensor has been successfully demonstrated.

A Biomedical sensor Network (BSN) is a small-size sensor network for medical applications, that may contain tens of sensor nodes. In this paper, we present a formal model for BSNs using timed automata, where the sensor nodes communicate using the Chipcon CC2420 transceiver (developed by Texas Instruments) according to the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. Based on the model, we have used UPPAAL to validate and tune the temporal configuration parameters of a BSN in order to meet desired QoS requirements on network connectivity, packet delivery ratio and end-to-end delay. the network studied allows dynamic reconfigurations of the network topology due to the temporally switching of sensor nodes to power-down mode for energy-saving or their physical movements. Both the simulator and model-checker of UPPAAL are used to analyze the average-case and worst-case behaviors. To enhance the scalability of the tool, we have implemented a (new text-based) version of the UPPAAL simulator optimized for exploring symbolic traces of automata containing large data structures such as matrices. Our experiments show that even though the main feature of the tool is model checking, it is also a promising and competitive tool for efficient simulation and parameter tuning. the simulator scales well;it can easily handle up to 50 nodes in our experiments. the model checker installed on a notebook can also deal with networks with 5 up to 16 nodes within minutes depending on the properties checked;these are BSNs of reasonable size for medical applications. Finally, to study the accuracy of our model and analysis results, we compare simulation results by UPPAAL for two medical scenarios with traditional simulation techniques using OMNeT++, one of the most used simulation tools for wireless sensor networks. the comparison shows that our analysis results coincide with the simulation results by OMNeT++ in most cases although there are some differences caused the simplified wireless channel model in UPPAAL. On the basis of studying conveyer belt break forecast device using X-ray systematically, the mathematical model was found and set up. And it would promote us to research the device further and optimize parameters. Firstly, the mathematical model of conveyer belt break forecast device was built for the first time by 'X-ray testing model". the method avoids thoroughly the impossibilities of obtaining the mathematical model by use of "basic particle convey function". the application of the model shows: it is scientific and precise to build mathematical model by this method and also easily realized Secondly, the simulation of X-ray break forecast device was realized by using visual programming technology. A novel wireless less-invasive implantable blood pressure sensing system is developed for advanced biological research. the system employs a miniature instrumented elastic cuff, wrapped around a blood vessel, for small animal real-time blood pressure monitoring. the elastic cuff is made of bio-compatible soft silicone material by a molding process and is filled by insulating silicone oil with an immersed MEMS capacitive pressure sensor interfaced with low power integrated electronics. this technique avoids vessel penetration and substantially minimizes vessel restriction due to the soft cuff elasticity, thus attractive for long-term implant. the MEMS pressure sensor detects the coupled blond pressure waveform caused by the vessel expansion and contraction, followed by amplification, digitization, and wireless FSK data transmission to an external receiver. the integrated electronics are designed with capability of receiving RF power from an external power source and converting the RF signal to a stable 2V DC supply in an adaptive manner to power the overall implant system, thus enabling a realization of stand-alone battery-less implant microsystem. the electronics are fabricated in a 1.5 mu m CMOS process and occupies an area of 2 mm x 2 mm. the prototype monitoring cuff is wrapped around the right carotid artery of a laboratory rat to measure real-time blood pressure waveform. the measured in vivo blood waveform is compared with a reference waveform recorded simultaneously by using a commercial catheter-tip transducer inserted into the left carotid artery. Two measured waveforms are closely matched with a constant scaling factor. the ASIC is interfaced with a 5 mm-diameter RF powering coil and four surface-mount components (one inductor and three capacitors) over a thin flexible substrate via bond wires, followed by silicone coating and packaging with the prototype blood pressure monitoring cuff. the overall system exhibits a weight of 280 mg, representing an order

As the world's aged population grows many governments are looking to remote healthcare monitoring solutions. With the recent active research activities in the area of Wireless sensor Networks (WSN), the development and realization of a light-weighted, low-cost and wireless home healthcare monitor has become feasible. A novel embedded remote healthcare system based on a commercially available wireless biomedical sensor networks is proposed in this paper. the sensor node device utilizes MSP430 microcontroller and operates on TinyOS operating system. the wireless communication between the sensor nodes and the care base-station used IEEE 802.15.4/Zigbee standard. the biophysical signal from elder is detected and radioed to a care base-station for monitoring.

Radio characterization of 802.15.4 and its impact on the design of mobile sensor networks

Future mobile sensing systems are being designed using 802.15.4 low-power short-range radios for a diverse set of devices from embedded mobile motes to sensor-enabled cellphones in support, for example, of people-centric sensing applications. However, there is little known about the use of 802.15.4 in mobile sensor settings nor its impact on the performance of future communication architectures. We present a set of initial results from a simple yet systematic set of benchmark experiments that offer a number of important insights into the radio characteristics of mobile 802.15.4 person-to-person communication. Our results show that the body factor - that is to say, the human body and where sensors are located on the body (e.g., on the chest, foot, in the pocket) - has a significant effect on the performance of the communications system. While this phenomenon has been discussed in the context of other radios (e.g., cellular, WiFi, UWB) its impact on 802.15.4 based mobile sensor networks is not understood. Other findings that also serve to limit the communication performance include the effective contact times between mobile nodes, and, what we term the zero bandwidth crossing, which is a product of mobility and the body factor. this paper presents a set of initial findings and insights on this topic, and importantly, we consider the impact of these findings on the design of future communication architectures for mobile sensing.

Summary form only given. Carnegie Mellon University has a long history of innovation in campus wide availability of networking infrastructures. In the early 80psilas, Andrew was inaugurated as a campus wide (wired) networking infrastructure that in a few years networked faculty, staff, and students (undergraduate and graduate) all across campus - offices, dormitories, room facilities. In 1995, Carnegie Mellon embarked on a similar effort with wireless Andrew that from 6 access points in 1995 went to hundreds and then thousands of access points in a couple of years providing global campus wireless coverage (see IEEE Personal Communications Magazine, February 1996). Both infrastructures served as campus wide testbeds to experiment and develop emergent technologies at the time. In 2006, Carnegie Mellon, through CenSCIR, the newly formed Center for Sensed Critical Infrastructure Research, has launched sensor Andrew, a campus wide living laboratory to deploy thousands of sensing platforms of various types, providing campus wide instrumentation coverage, and supporting the breadth of applications users feel the need to develop. this keynote will overview sensor Andrew, and describe its hardware, software, and middleware infrastructure, as well as some of the applications that are being developed. We will also address the issues related to what to do with the large amounts of data collected by an application supported on sensor Andrew, how to process these data in a distributed fashion, and how to infer from the localized sensor information global understanding and global behaviors.
