In this paper we present a platform for developing mobile, locative and collaborative distributed games comprised of small programmable object technologies (e.g., wireless sensor networks) and traditional networked processors. the platform is implemented using a combination of JAVA Standard and Mobile editions, targeting also mobile phones that have some kind of sensors installed. We briefly present the architecture of our platform and demonstrate its capabilities by reporting two pervasive multiplayer games. the key characteristic of these games is that players interact with each other and their surrounding environment by moving, running and gesturing as a means to perform game related actions, using small programmable object technologies.

Showing functional correctness by simulation before implementation, and preserving it by automated code generation, is extremely useful to reduce the development time for an embedded application. this is even more true for wireless sensor networks, since their nodes often provide very rudimentary debugging facilities, and sufficiently large networks for realistic analysis may be expensive to deploy. While this approach, also known as model-based design, is becoming quite standard for several domains that have similar constraints as wireless sensor networks, such as automotive electronics, there is a lack of tools for this purpose in the WSN world. In order to fill this gap, in this paper we present a framework (based on Simulink, Stateflow and embedded Coder) in which an engineer can create sensor network components (both at the application and at the protocol level) that can be used as building blocks to model, simulate and automatically generate code for different underlying platforms and operating systems.

A performance analysis of the effect of embedding an FBG sensor in an optical communications system is presented. the simulations considered focus on the effects on both the sensing and the communications systems. the effect of power levels of the interrogating optical source on the performance of the two systems is also investigated under different excitation levels. the results obtained show a good tolerance in terms of quality of transmission for the two systems.

In this paper we present a new approach called cue-based networking that uses hints or cues about the physical environment to optimize networked application behavior. We define the notion of cues and describe how cues can be obtained using a wireless sensor network as the underlying platform. We identify both the research and system challenges that need to be addressed to realize benefits of the approach under a target application of video delivery over IP networks. In the process, we identify a key challenge of wireless sensor networks, namely the timeliness-robustness tradeoff. We design an adaptive algorithm that balances this tradeoff satisfying both timeliness and robustness requirements. through an implementation of the video delivery application using the proposed algorithm in a real home environment, we highlight the practical benefits of the proposed approach.

Monitoring human activities using wearable wireless sensor nodes has the potential to enable many useful applications for everyday situations. the deployment of a compact and computationally efficient grammatical representation of actions reduces the complexities involved in the detection and recognition of human behaviors in a distributed system. In this paper, we introduce a road map to a linguistic framework for the symbolic representation of inertial information for physical movement monitoring. Our method for creating phonetic descriptions consists of constructing primitives across the network and assigning certain primitives to each movement. Our technique exploits the notion of a decision tree to identify atomic actions corresponding to every given movement. We pose an optimization problem for the fast identification of primitives. We then prove that this problem is NP-Complete and provide a fast greedy algorithm to approximate the solution. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our phonetic model on data collected from three subjects.

the usage of conventional assistive cane devices is critical in reducing the risk of falls, which are particularly detrimental to the elderly and disabled. Individuals that experience the greatest risks rely on cane devices for support of ambulation. Results of many studies, however, have shown that incorrect cane usage is prevalent among cane users. the original SmartCane assistive system has been developed to provide a method for acquiring detailed motion data from cane usage. the cane itself, however, lacks any type of programmability as well as real-time data processing algorithms to provide feedback to the cane user. this paper describes the development of a real-time sensor information processing algorithm that provides direct detection of cane usage characteristics. Specifically, it supports direct feedback to the cane user, permitting guidance for proper cane usage and reducing the risk of falls. this paper also aims to improve upon the existing system by incorporating MicroLEAP, an energy-aware embedded computing platform. the new system provides local data processing capability by classifying whether an individual is executing a stride with proper cane motion and applied forces.

Nodes in wireless ad hoc networks are often limited in terms of resources, such as storage, power, and bandwidth. A downside of this is the fact that local storage at one node cannot accommodate the vast amount of data contained in the network. In this paper, we present SharedState, a scheme for storage, replication, and distribution of common-interest data in wireless networks of resource-constrained devices (e.g. sensor nodes or embedded devices). SharedState works under the assumption that individual nodes would greatly benefit from having access to the wealth of information in the network, but are unable to store it locally at once. SharedState strives to make data available to every node by providing local access to a subset of the whole collection of data items in the network at any moment in time and ensuring that this subset is updated periodically. this is accomplished by probabilistic propagation and replication of data items, ensuring the availability and persistence of information in the face of changing network conditions. We evaluate the performance of SharedState by studying the effectiveness with which nodes can gather information from the network. In addition, we optimize the bandwidth usage of our proposed solution by minimizing unnecessary communication based on feedback from the local neighborhood.

Pedestrian safety is a major concern in road transportation as pedestrian/vehicle accidents account for the second largest cause of traffic-related injuries and fatalities worldwide. Considerable work has examined the use of lidar, radar and computer vision for pedestrian detection but existing solutions are costly and work only if pedestrians are in the vehicle's line-of-sight. In this paper, we present a novel technique based on wireless sensor networks that is cheap and enables pedestrian detection beyond the driver's horizon. the detection system is based on the use of "cat's eyes" augmented with embedded processing and communication capabilities that are able to detect pedestrians and forward this information along the road. We describe how such a system was successfully built with SOL, a high-level programming language for wireless sensor networks. Initial results show that the system obtains detection rates of 100%, false positive rates of 0%, and that the precision of the estimated position of pedestrians depends on their heading and relative position to sensor nodes.

Wireless sensor networks provide an opportunity to enhance the current equipment diagnosis systems in the process industry, which have been based so far on wired networks. In this paper, we use our experience in the Anshan Iron and Steel Factory, China, as an example to present the issues from the real field of process industry, and our solutions. the challenges are three fold: First, very high reliability is required; second, energy consumption is constrained; and third, the environment is very challenging and constrained. To address these issues, it is necessary to put systematic efforts on network topology and node placement, network protocols, embedded software, and hardware. In this paper, we propose two technologies i.e. design for reliability and energy efficiency (DRE), and design for reconfiguration (DRC). Using these techniques we developed Anshan, a wireless sensor network for monitoring the temperature of rollers in a continuously annealing line and detecting equipment failures. Project Anshan includes 406 sensor nodes and has been running for four months continuously.

State-of-the-art research and development in large-scale wireless systems have been pushed to the limits, essentially on dealing with the challenges from network scalability and node resource (complexity) constraints, as well as the need for an effective application programming interface. In this paper, we present the reference model of embedded Wireless Interconnect (EWI), as a potential merge of research advances in multiple engineering disciplines, so as to effectively encapsulate the complexities of large-scale wireless networking. the cognitive radio approach is applied in the EWI reference model, where we define two basic propositions of the cognitive radio for large-scale wireless networks, i.e., opportunistic spectrum sensing and polling, respectively. the research suggests the potential standardization of the cognitive radio in large-scale wireless systems, which consequently results in the large-scale cognitive networks, opportunistically utilizing network resources including both spectrum bandwidth and wireless node availability, and achieving effective application programming over such systems.
