We study the problem of aggregate querying over sensor networks where the network topology is continuously evolving. We develop scalable data aggregation techniques that remain efficient and accurate even as nodes move, join or leave the network. We present a novel distributed algorithm called CountTorrent, that enables fast estimation of certain classes of aggregate queries such as COUNT and SUM. CountTorrent does not require a static routing infrastructure, is easily implemented in a distributed setting, and can be used to inform all network nodes of the aggregate query result, instead of just the query initiator as is done in traditional query aggregation schemes. We evaluate its robustness and accuracy compared to previous aggregation approaches through simulations of dynamic and mobile sensor network environments and experiments on micaz motes. We show that in networks where the nodes are stationary, CountTorrent can provide 100% accurate aggregate results even in the presence of lossy links. In mobile sensor networks where the nodes constantly move and hence the network topology changes continuously, CountTorrent provides a close (within 10 - 20%) estimate of the accurate aggregate query value to all nodes in the network at all times.

Wireless sensor network technologies enable a wide variety of applications (e.g., environmental monitoring). Such sensor networks are often deployed in regions that make it difficult to collect and redistribute the nodes for maintenance. However, there is often a need to reprogram all of the nodes in the network, either during application test phases on deployed networks, or to support software upgrades. therefore, a reliable method of sending a relatively large amount of data to each node in the network is required to support these functions.

the Columbia River (CoRie) Observation Network includes an extensive array of fixed stations monitoring the Columbia River estuary and nearby coastal ocean. At each station, variable combinations of in-situ sensors measure one or more physical properties of water or atmosphere. Using a multi-scale data assimilation model, the CORIE modeling system integrates models and field controls to produce a simulation of 3D circulation, in a region centered in the estuary and plume. the CORIE data assimilation framework [1] combines observational data with numerical data models to produce an estimated system state for the physical process. To augment the fixed observational network, additional data is collected during periodical cruises of a mobile sensor station. Because these cruises are expensive and rare, an important goal for scientists is to sample data at points that most reduce the uncertainty of the data assimilation model. this is challenging, since the estuary environment is very dynamic, and therefore the optimal cruise path cannot be determined in advance. the goal of our system is to move the mobile station as the data assimilation proceeds in order to maximally reduce the uncertainty in the data assimilation process.

Software development For sensor network is made difficult by resource constrained sensor devices, distributed system complexity, communication unreliability, and high labor cost. Simulation, as a useful tool, provides an affordable way to study algorithmic problems with flexibility and controllability. However, in exchange for speed simulation often trades detail that ultimately limits its utility. In this paper, we propose a new development paradigm, simulation-based augmented reality. in which simulation is used to enhance development on physical hardware by seamlessly integrating a running simulated network with a physical deployment in a way that is transparent to each. the advantages of such an augmented network include the ability to study a large sensor network with limited hardware and the convenience of studying a part of the physical network with simulation's debugging, profiling and tracing capabilities. We implement the augmented reality system based on a sensor network simulator with high fidelity and high scalability. Key to the design are "super" sensor nodes which are half virtual and half physical that interconnect simulation and physical network with fine-grained traffic forwarding and accurate time synchronization. Our results detail the overhead associated with integrating live and simulated networks and the timing accuracy between virtual and physical parts of the network. We also discuss various application scenarios for our system.

We present Flush, a reliable, high goodput bulk data transport protocol for wireless sensor networks. Flush provides end-to-end reliability, reduces transfer time, and adapts to time-varying network conditions. It achieves these properties using end-to-end acknowledgments, implicit snooping of control information, and a rate-control algorithm that operates at each hop along a flow. Using several real network topologies, we show that Flush closely tracks or exceeds the maximum goodput achievable by a hand-tuned but fixed rate for each hop over a wide range of path lengths and varying network conditions. Rush is scalable. its effective bandwidth over a 48-hop wireless network is approximately one-third of the rate achievable over one hop. the design of Rush is simplified by assuming that different flows do not interfere with each other, a reasonable restriction for many sensornet applications that collect bulk data in a coordinated fashion, like structural health monitoring, volcanic activity monitoring, or protocol evaluation. We collected all of the performance data presented in this paper using Flush itself.

In this paper, we address the problem of tracking cooperative mobile nodes in wireless sensor networks. Aiming at a resource efficient solution, we advocate the use of sensors that maintain their location information and rely oil the tracking service only when their locations change. In the proposed approach, the tracked node transmits a signal and infrastructure nodes measure the Doppler shifts of the transmitted signal. We show that Mica2 motes can measure RF- Doppler shifts with 0.2 Hz accuracy corresponding to a 0.14 m/s error in relative speed estimates using radio interferometric technique. the tracking problem is modeled as a non-linear optimization problem and an extended Kalman filter is used to solve it accurately assuming Gaussian measurement errors. However, this approach may fail if the tracked node changes its speed or direction. We propose to update the Kalman filter state by performing constrained least-squares optimization when a maneuver is detected. the combined approach achieves almost a 50% accuracy improvement over the Kalman filter alone when the mobile node changes its direction and speed frequently. We describe our proof-of-concept implementation of the tracking service and evaluate its performance experimentally and ill simulation.

As sensor networks move towards increasing heterogeneity, the number of link layers, MAC protocols, and underlying transportation mechanisms increases. System developers must adapt their applications and systems to accommodate a wide range of underlying protocols and mechanisms. However, existing communication architectures for sensor networks are not designed for this heterogeneity and therefore the system developer must redevelop their systems for each underlying communication protocol or mechanism. To remedy this situation, we present a communication architecture that adapts to a wide range of underlying communication mechanisms, from the MAC layer to the transport layer, without requiring any changes to applications or protocols. We show that the architecture is expressive enough to accommodate typical sensor network protocols. Measurements show that the increase in execution time over a non-adaptive architecture is small. In this demonstration paper, we present a multi-radio MAC protocol and a prototype sensor node platform which supports dual frequency bands of operation. the multi-radio MAC protocol combines the advantages of both high and low frequency bands to give an energy efficient performance with high throughput and low latency in several applications. Our prototype supports spectrum agility, which is becoming important due to ever crowding spectrum. Besides demonstrating the improved performance metrics and spectrum agility support, we will also present the flexibility provided by our MAC protocol.

Wireless sensor Networks have been proposed for use in many location-dependent applications. Most of these need to identify the locations of wireless sensor nodes, a challenging task because of the severe constraints oil cost, energy and effective range of sensor devices. To overcome limitations in existing solutions, we present a Multi-Sequence Positioning (MSP) method for large-scale stationary sensor node localization ill outdoor environments. the novel idea behind MSP is to reconstruct and estimate two-dimensional location information for each sensor node by processing multiple one-dimensional node sequences, easily obtained through loosely guided event distribution. Starting from a basic MSP design, we propose four optimizations, which work together to increase the localization accuracy. We address several interesting issues, such as incomplete (partial) node sequences and sequence flip, found in the Mirage test-bed we built. We have evaluated the MSP system through theoretical analysis, extensive simulation as well as two physical systems (an indoor version with 46 MICAz motes and an outdoor version with 20 MICAz motes). this evaluation demonstrates that MSP call achieve an accuracy within one foot, requiring neither additional costly hardware on sensor nodes nor precise event distribution. It also provides a nice tradeoff between physical cost (anchors) and soft cost (events), while maintaining localization accuracy.

the circular sensing model has been widely used to estimate performance of sensing applications in existing analysis and simulations. While this model provides valuable high-level guidelines, the quantitative results obtained may not reflect the true performance of these applications, due to the existence of obstacles and sensing irregularity introduced by insufficient hardware calibration. In this project, we design and implement two Sensing Area Modeling (SAM) techniques useful in the real world. they complement each other in the design space. P-SAM provides accurate sensing area models for individual nodes using controlled or monitored events, while V-SAM provides continuous sensing similarity models using natural events in an environment. With these two models, we pioneer an investigation of the impact of sensing irregularity on application performance, such as coverage scheduling. We evaluate SAM extensively in real-world settings, using three testbeds consisting of 40 MICAz motes and 14 XSM motes. To study the performance at scale, we also provide an extensive 1,400-node simulation. Evaluation results reveal several serious issues concerning circular models, and demonstrate significant improvements
