Monitoring of human activities is an essential capability of many smart systems. In recent years much progress has been achieved. One of the key remaining challenges is the availability of labeled training data, in particular taking into account the degree of variability in human activities. A possible solution is to leverage large scale online data repositories. this has been previously attempted with image and sound data, as both microphones and cameras are widely used sensing modalities. In this paper, we describe a first step towards the use of online, text-based activity descriptions to support general sensor-based activity recognition systems. the idea is to extract semantic information from online texts about the way complex activities are composed of simple ones that have to be performed (e.g. a manual for assembling a furniture piece) and use such a semantic description in conjunction with sensor based, statistical classifiers of basic actions to recognize the complex activities and compose them into semantic trees. Extraction of domain relevant information evaluated in 11 different text-based manuals from different domains reached an average recall of 77%, and precision of 88%. Actual structural error-rate in the construction of respective trees was around 1%.

Air pollution is a major cause of health problem in urban areas. Vehicles are the major sources of the current air pollution in urban cities. In this work, we proposed a pollution monitoring system for vehicles using IoTs. this system measures the real-time pollution generated by vehicles on road. this paper describes the design of the system for sensing the pollution using sensor, arduino, smart phone and mobile applications for displaying the personalize air pollution information for individual vehicle. We evaluate the proposed approach on real-data experiment and it shows some preliminary results.

the proliferation of Internet of things (IoT) devices has led to the deployment of various types of sensors in the homes, offices, buildings, lawns, cities, and even in agricultural farms. Due to the diverse nature of IoT deployments and the likelihood of sensor failures in-the-wild, a key challenge in the design of IoT systems is ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and fidelity of sensor data. We present a system based on the Fall-curve primitive - a sensor's voltage response when the power is turned off - to characterize the sensor. A sensor's Fall-curve constitutes a unique signature using which it is possible to identify the sensor and also detect whether it is operating correctly or not. In this demo, we show Fall-curve in action to accurately detect and identify the sensors connected to an IoT device. Furthermore, we also show that Fall-curves can reliably detect various transient and permanent sensor faults in an IoT device.

Modern microcontrollers come with a selection of clock sources that have widely differing frequencies and power consumptions. For applications whose workloads vary over time, dynamically changing the clock can provide significant energy savings. the varying constraints of embedded hardware environments and the complex interactions of multiprogrammed systems makes this approach burdensome to do in application logic. Power Clocks orchestrates energy optimizing clock management in the kernel, obviating the need for application involvement while still achieving acceptable performance for typical workloads. this poster describes Power Clocks's design and presents preliminary results.

We consider the problem of tracking and localizing radio-tagged targets, a labor-intensive and time-consuming task necessary for wildlife conservation fieldwork. We design a lightweight sensor system for measurement of radio signal strength information from multiple radio tags. the sensor system is designed to suit low-cost, versatile, easy to operate multi-rotor UAVs. In this demo paper, we demonstrate our Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) sensor system for tracking and locating multiple VHF radio tags.

LimbMotion is a limb tracking system which enables accurate and real-time tracking with one wearable device on the wrist/ankle of a user. By integrating inertial sensing and acoustic sensing, LimbMotion significantly reduces the search space of a moving limb, and provides accurate limb tracking for further human computer interaction (HCI). Objectives of this demo are to show how LimbMotion works and two HCI applications supported by LimbMotion.

Data traffic congestion is one of the most important issues in wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs). Congestion in WMSNs causes many problems, e.g. long delay, high packet loss. therefore, it is very important to solve the congestion problem in WMSNs. To address this issue, we propose a novel traffic congestion control algorithm based on dual buffer detection. the proposed algorithm reveals the implementation of a networked system for joint rate control and error control of video over resource-constrained embedded devices. First, it uses a combination of two different congestion indicators to precisely detect congestion. One of the indicators is buffer occupancy, and the other one is buffer occupancy change rate. the proposed algorithm analyzes the buffer occupancy and its change rate at each node to handle congestion in an efficient manner. Second, we develop a feedback-based rate controller to enhance the received video quality. It is shown that the developed rate controller can adaptively adjust the sending rates of nodes in congestion situation. Finally, we present different retransmission mechanisms for different kinds of packets. After a certain number of failures in retransmission, the lost packets are saved temporarily and retransmitted later on when free channel is available to further alleviate congestion. the proposed algorithm is implemented on 13 sensor nodes. It is extensively evaluated on a multi-hop WMSNs. the experiment results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the previous approaches in terms of rate control and packet loss.

Many-to-all communication is a prerequisite for many applications and network services, including distributed control and data replication. However, current solutions do not meet the scalability and latency requirements of emerging applications. this paper presents Mixer, a many-to-all broadcast primitive for dynamic wireless mesh networks. Mixer integrates random linear network coding (RLNC) with synchronous transmissions and approaches the order-optimal scaling in the number of messages to be exchanged. To achieve an efficient operation in real networks, we design Mixer in response to the theory of RLNC and the characteristics of physical-layer capture. Our experiments demonstrate, for example, that Mixer outperforms the state of the art by up to 3.8x and provides a reliability greater than 99.99 % even at a node moving speed of 60 km/h.

Location-based services have become an important market. At their core, location-based services generally rely on identifying the location of individuals or objects. In outdoor environments, determining the location is typically accomplished by means of GPS. In indoor environments, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) based localization has received a lot of attention. Most recently, an increasing number of mobile devices are capable of supporting ANT as an alternative low-power communication protocol. Unlike BLE, however, the suitability of ANT for localization has not been analyzed extensively. We report the initial results of an experimental study to compare ANT and BLE when used for localization. the results suggest that ANT-based localization can clearly outperform BLE, when using fingerprinting as the underlying localization principle.

the main objective of the research is the automation of current agricultural practices using technology for better performance. this study is based on the hardware-software codesign methodology applied for embedded systems which allows to fully exploit the synergy between both elements. As a result of the study, a prototype was designed for helping farmers to carry out the work in greenhouses in a more automatic way avoiding much of the manual handling. the prototype includes both environmental temperature and soil moisture sensors, which will activate the irrigation or fertigation through nebulizers. these specific sensors are able to detect percentages of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other minerals in the soil. It also includes an ultrasonic sensor that measures the current water level in the tanks for water rationing and a solar panel is used as an energy supply. Data from the sensors are read by the farmer from a mobile application to then be stored on a server in the cloud and keep records. the designed prototype is an excellent alternative for the agricultural sector as it lowers costs and automates the processes. It also gives the farmer access to the information as it keeps daily data records, but the most important benefit is that allows to give an optimal treatment for the plants in the greenhouses.
