In recent era surveillance systems play a vital role in our daily life. the goal of surveillance systems is to collect the desired information about concerned targets in the sensing environment. Traditional surveillance systems are limited by a predefined monitoring pattern. It can render a reduced system reliability. Moreover, the system is always functional regardless of the target presence. It results in an increased and useless system activity, resources utilization and power consumption. In this context an event driven human surveillance system is devised. It overcomes these drawbacks up to a certain extent by smartly combining a sensors assembly along with a camera, embedded processor and classifiers. Except the low power object detector, detection of concerned object in the surveillance zone, the remaining system is kept in sleep mode. On the detection of an event the system modules like embedded processor, target location detectors, camera, etc. are activated. the event occurrence can also activate the lightning system depending on the sensing environment illumination condition. the target location, within the field of view, is provided by the location detectors. this information is employed to pilot the actuator in order to update the camera positioning. the captured images are analysed by the human detector module. Further actions like image storage, video recording, etc. are taken depending on the human detector output. the proposed system functionality is verified with an experimental setup. Results demonstrate the devised system self-organisation feature. It results into an improved performance of the proposed system, in terms of system resources utilization, reliability and power consumption compared to the counter traditional ones.

In this paper, we propose a design for novel and experimental cloud computing systems. the proposed system aims at enhancing computational, communicational and annalistic capabilities of road navigation services by merging several independent technologies, namely vision-based embedded navigation systems, prominent Cloud Computing systems (CCSs) and Vehicular Ad-hoc NETwork (VANET). this work presents our initial investigations by describing the design of a global generic system. the designed system has been experimented with various scenarios of video-based road services. Moreover, the associated architecture has been implemented on a small-scale simulator of an in-vehicle embedded system. the implemented architecture has been experimented in the case of a simulated road service to aid the police agency. the goal of this service is to recognize and track searched individuals and vehicles in a real-time monitoring system remotely connected to moving cars. the presented work demonstrates the potential of our system for efficiently enhancing and diversifying real-time video services in road environments.

this paper studies the impact of clock mismatches in spatially distributed real-time control systems. We consider a configuration in which sensor measurements are collected by one processor that transmits the measurements to another control/actuation processor through a network, but the two processors do not have a common clock. Due to the clock mismatch, there will be an offset between the actual time at which a measurement is taken and the time reported by the sensor. Our goal is to discover fundamental limitations to the ability to stabilize the control loop arising from the clocks mismatch. We consider time-varying bounded offsets and derive limitations on the offset bound for the stability of the feedback system. For the case of a scalar linear process, there exists a critical limitation, which depends on the level of instability of the plant and the nominal sampling period. In contrast, for the vector linear processes, if the process dynamics has at least two distinct real eigenvalues, then there is no fundamental limitation on the offset bound. © 2015 acm.

Batteries are commonly used to power sensors, a fact that carries severe drawbacks such as limited lifetime and regular replacement. Battery powered sensors are particularly impractical in under-water pipelines due to limited access. therefore, harvesting of ambient energy to power embedded sensors is an attractive option for such systems. A method is proposed, in this paper, to power in-pipe wireless sensor nodes based on energy harvesting techniques, with minimal impact to the pipe performance. Based on the initial analysis presented in the paper, models will be developed next to facilitate the design of an energy harvester system for Turkey-Cyprus water pipeline project currently under construction.

Energy Harvesting - Wireless sensor Networks (EH-WSNs) constitute systems of networked sensing nodes that are capable of extracting energy from the environment and that use the harvested energy to operate in a sustainable state. Sustainability, seen as design goal, has a significant impact on the design of the security protocols for such networks, as the nodes have to adapt and optimize their behaviour according to the available energy. Traditional key management schemes do not take energy into account, making them not suitable for EH-WSNs. In this paper we propose a new multipath key reinforcement scheme specifically designed for EH-WSNs. the proposed scheme allows each node to take into consideration and adapt to the amount of energy available in the system. In particular, we present two approaches, one static and one fully dynamic, and we discuss some experimental results. (C) 2015 the Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

this paper presents the extension of the simulator VSNsim to enable the simulation of hybrid camera networks in the field of coordination and control algorithms. A hybrid cam- era network combines mobile and static cameras. thus, mo- bile cameras in form of autonomously moving robots are added to the existing static cameras of VSNsim. Further- more, priorities can be assigned to rooms in the simulated environment in order to focus monitoring to dedicated areas. © 2015 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) are one of the most important technologies in the fields of wireless networking today. WSNs have a vast amount of applications including sensors embedded in the outer surface of pipeline or mounted along the supporting structure of bridges, robotics and health care. In this paper, we study the issues of linear sensor placement to monitor oil pipelines. We address the problem of optimal number of sensors to be deployed given initial energy of each sensor node and message buffering limitations. the objectives of the deployment process are: 1) maximizing the coverage of the pipe, 2) producing a connected network, and 3) prolonging the overall network lifetime. the paper utilizes two of the evolutionary algorithms to solve the deployment problem which are Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). Extensive set of experiments are performed for performance evaluation. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier B.V.

this paper presents a generic processing architecture as well as tools and approaches for supporting road monitoring services. More precisely, a small-scale simulator is presented for experimenting the design and the implementation of vision-based vehicular embedded systems in indoor environments, i.e. a test bench for embedded system laboratories. this simulator employs embedded electronic systems, sensors as well as hybrid communication and computational technologies. In particular, these technologies are exploited in order to produce our cooperative and real-time embedded system for enhancing road monitoring services. this type of simulator can be used for developing a variety of innovative road monitoring services based on the detection of dynamical points of interest. Notably, a system has been implemented in the case of a simulated road service to aid police agency for the recognition of wanted individuals and stolen vehicles. Experimental results show the potential of the simulator for fostering the development of a next generation of vehicular embedded system as well as for the emergence of participatory road services. Driven by falling prices, continuous miniaturization and increasing functionality, low power wireless networks tap into new application areas. But an efficient utilization of embedded systems is hindered by lacks in interoperability and flexibility, because they are proprietary. In this paper, an approach for an abstraction layer in the area of embedded systems with respect to low power wireless networks is presented. this layer is used to harmonize interfaces between network-node and application functionality like sensors. the overall goal is to design a dedicated modular low power wireless network with a flexible structure and topology. this paper investigates the problem of observer-based controller design for nonlinear networked control systems subject to imperfect communication links. the Takagi-Sugeno ( T-S) model is utilized to approximate the nonlinear plant. Both the imperfect sensor-to-controller and controller-to-actuator links are considered, which are described via two independent Bernoulli stochastic processes. A dynamic compensation strategy is adopted in the controller-to-actuator link. the premise variables of the observer and the controller to be designed depend on the state variables estimated by the observer instead of those of the plant. Moreover, sufficient criteria are obtained to guarantee the resulting closed-loop system to be stochastically stable with H-infinity performance. Finally, a numerical example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the methodology proposed in this paper.
