this paper introduces an approach for enabling visually impaired and blind people to practice jogging activities by 3D environment perception for course detection and collision avoidance, as well as feedback generation in an intuitive manner. Besides a system concept, first prototypic realizations, that confirm the general feasibility, are presented for this domain, which has not been addressed by research until now.

Assigning tasks to a set of robots is a fundamental problem in robotics. It consists in finding the best task assignment to the available robots. In this paper, we present two distributed market-based algorithms to solve the assignment problem where n robots compete for n tasks with the assumption that each robot can be assigned to only one task. the first algorithm, called DMB, represents a Distributed Market-Based algorithm where each robot bids for every task. the second algorithm is an extension of the DMB. It consists in swapping tasks between robots in order to improve the efficiency of the whole assignment. We conducted both real-world experimental testing, and MATLAB simulations to evaluate performance of the proposed algorithms and compare them against the centralized Hungarian algorithm in terms of traveled distance. Simulation results show that the IDMB algorithm produces near optimal solutions and in several cases it gives the optimal solution. In addition, we demonstrated the feasibility of our algorithms through real-world experimentation on robots. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.

A variety of applications for wireless sensor network technology have become practical and available including environment, healthcare, civil, and military, leading to greater interest in both the research and industrial community. Despite several distinctive features, i.e., tiny size and portable, embedded various sensing capability, and cost-effectiveness, among routing and reliability, localization is one of the key challenges. Due to the cost and limitation of additional hardware nodes, a range-free localization scheme based on the absolute point-to-point distance estimation, is promising and is being pursued as a cost-effective approach. thus, we propose a novel hybrid localization algorithm utilizing distinctive characteristics of centroid-based and DV-Hop-based approaches with a heterogeneous number of reference nodes. In addition, an extra weight derived from a fuzzy logic function using signal intensity is employed. these combinations are Hybrid Fuzzy Centroid and DV-Hop Localization leading to outstanding performance in terms of location error reduction when compared to other state-of-the-art range-free localization schemes.

Last decade saw the development of Wireless sensor Networks with multitude of applications built around the sensors. though most of the issues at protocol and device level remain solved for Wireless sensor Networks, there is a growing trend in integration of sensors and sensor based systems with Cyber Physical systems, Machine-to-Machine and Device-to-Device communication both in infrastructure and ad-hoc modes. the emergence of Cloud Computing, highly intelligent 'Smart' devices and efforts towards 5th Generation telecom systems is expected to lead the revolution of a networked world with increased demand for situational awareness leading proliferation of sensors at the edge of physical world. Mounting intelligence built in 'smart' devices, scarcity of frequency spectrum, disruptive technologies and limitations on further reduction in base station size may render base station centric-architecture of today's wireless networks old-fashioned. Due to low data rate bursty nature of sensor data, massive-MIMO antennas, device-centric architectures, smarter devices and native support for Machine-to-Machine and Device-to-Device communication, sensor data originating from these systems and disruptive technologies is expected to grow manifold through passing years. Communication and network engineers face an emerging challenge of designing communication and network protocols that can efficiently get integrated with the emerging wireless cellular and computing paradigms. In this paper, we list down these communication and networking challenges and provide our vision for Wireless sensor Networks related platforms and enabling technologies of next decade. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Analog functions have been implemented in a Silicon-on-lnsulator (SOI) process optimized for high-temperature (>225°C) operation. these include a linear regulator/reference block that supports input voltages up to 50V and provides multiple independent voltage outputs. Additional blocks provide configurable sensor excitation levels of up to 10VDC and/or 20V AC-differential, 1with current limiting and monitoring. A dual-channel Programmable- Gain-Instrvmentation Amplifier (PGIA) and a high-level AC input block with programmable gain and offset serve signal conditioning, gain, and scaling needs. A multiplexer and analog buffer provide an output that is scaled and centered for down-stream A-to-D conversion. Limited component availability and high component counts deter development of sensing and control electronics for extreme temperature (>200°) applications. systems require front-end power conditioning, sensor excitation and monitoring, response amplification, scaling, and multiplexing. Back-end Analog-to-Digital conversion and digital processing/control can be implemented using one or two integrated circuit chips, whereas the front-end functions require component counts in the dozens. the low level of integration in the available portfolio of SOI devices results in high component count when constructing signal conditioning interfaces for aerospace sensors. these include quasi-DC sensors such as thermocouples, strain-gauges, bridge transducers as well as AC-coupled sensors and position transducers, such as Linear- Variable Differential Transducers (LVDT's). Furthermore, a majority of sensor applications are best served by excitation/response voltage ranges that typically exceed the voltage range of digital electronics (either 5 V or 3.3 V in currently available digital IC's for use above 200X1). these constraints led embedded systems LLC to design a generic de\ ice which was implemented by Honeywell as an analog ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit). this pap

In utilizing CMOS-MEMS resonators as mass-sensitive platforms, a uniform temperature distribution on the membrane surface is critical. In this paper, a novel design of CMOS-MEMS resonator with embedded microheater to control the temperature over the sensing layer was successfully designed and characterized. the CMOS-MEMS resonator was fabricated using 0.35 μm CMOS and post-CMOS micromachining process. Temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of aluminum temperature sensor embedded in the membrane was determined by measurement of resistance variation as a function of temperature from 27°C and 150°C. the TCR of the temperature sensor is found to be 0.00386 and 0.00379 for measurements carried out while temperature is increasing and decreasing, respectively. the total resistance of the temperature sensor and the wire interconnects was theoretically determined to be 74.23 Ω and 94.82 Ω, respectively, making a total resistance of 169.05 Ω when measurements are made through the pads. On the other hand the measured resistance at 27°C is found to be 169.06 Ω which is in very good agreement with a difference of 0.006 %. the experimental results and analytical values of resistance of the temperature sensor as a function of temperatures shows a good agreement (1.07%). TCR of Al is found to 0.00382 with percentage difference of about 2.05 % from standard value (39 ×10 -4 C -1 ).

For the last fifteen years, research explored the hardware, software, sensing, communication abstractions, languages, and protocols that could make networks of small, embedded devices---motes---sample and report data for long periods of time unattended. Today, the application and technological landscapes have shifted, introducing new requirements and new capabilities. Hardware has evolved past 8 and 16 bit microcontrollers: there are now 32 bit processors with lower energy budgets and greater computing capability. New wireless link layers have emerged, creating protocols that support rapid and efficient setup and teardown but introduce novel limitations that systems must consider. the time has come to look beyond optimizing networks of motes. We look towards new technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy, Cortex M processors, and capable energy harvesting, with new application spaces such as personal area networks, and new capabilities and requirements in security and privacy to inform contemporary hardware and software platforms. It is time for a new, open experimental platform in this post-mote era.
