In this study, we conducted long-distance radio propagation experiments at 1mW/145 MHz to realize low-power long-distance communication for wildlife research and disaster prevention telemetry [1]. We successfully realized long-distance communications from a weather balloon (elevation: ∼14,000 m) with 1 mW radio power. Furthermore, we demonstrated that our method can achieve such long-distance communication at 10 BPS/1mW with battery cell operation in the SSB mode and that the SNR in the SSB bandwidth is better than-10 dB.

Buildings are often inefficiently conditioned. Rooms that are empty are needlessly conditioned and partially filled rooms are conditioned assuming maximum occupancy. In this demonstration, we describe a system that reduces energy consumption by opportunistically reducing energy consumption based on room usage;we only condition rooms currently occupied and condition the space based on realtime occupancy measurements. We will show how a thermal sensor array can be used measure occupancy in real-time and how this occupancy information can be integrated with a real building management system in order to control the heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting of a building to optimize energy usage.

Contiki's Cooja is a very popular Wireless sensor Network (WSN) simulator, but it lacks support for modelling sensing coverage. We introduce WSN-Maintain, a Cooja-based tool for maintaining coverage requirements in an in-building WSN. To analyse the coverage of a building, WSN-Maintain takes as input the oorplan of the building, the coverage requirement of each region and the locations of sensor nodes. We take account of the heterogeneity of device specifications in terms of communication capability and sensing coverage. WSN-Maintain is run in parallel withthe collect-view tool of Contiki, which was integrated into the Cooja simulator. We show that WSN-Maintain is able to automatically turn on redundant nodes to maintain the coverage requirement when active nodes fail and report failures that require physical maintenance. this tool allows us to evaluate diferent approaches to maintain coverage, including deferring physical maintenance to reduce operational costs.

Development of wireless sensor network applications remains a challenge, due to lack of visibility into the global network state. Debugging instrumentation using printf-like instructions affects the execution timing and non-intrusive approaches, such as JTAG, have not been used beyond a single node due to their high cost. this paper presents Minerva, a testbed architecture for distributed debugging of wireless sensor networks. At the core of our architecture is a exible debug board installed at each node. the board design is driven by cost-eficiency of the testbed instrumentation and provides access to the onchip debug port of the sensor node's processor. We focus on three main debugging modalities: (i) non-intrusive networkwide tracing of the internal state of individual nodes;(ii) synchronous stopping of the whole network on a breakpoint;and (iii) distributed assertion checking. We demonstrate the debugging capabilities of Minerva in use-cases based on well-known sensor network protocols in a 20-nodes ndoor testbed. Our results indicate that Minerva provides non-intrusive, network-wide debugging of sensor network applications at a low cost.

In this paper, we present a real time remote triggered laboratory which has multi-set, multi-group of wireless sensor network experimental setup which is envisioned to provide a practical experience of designing and implementing wireless sensor networks' algorithms in both indoor and outdoor conditions. the architecture provides a remote code editing mechanism using deluge protocol that offers the user a flexible environment for the experimentation. Central and local authentication agents serve a two level security mechanism which makes the system robust to security threats. the lab is accessible for all the students in the world through internet and it will provide an intuitive web-based interface, where registered users can access the code and do code editing.

In a wireless sensor networks, packet losses can result from attacks affecting the nodes or the wireless links connecting the nodes. Failure to identify the actual attack can undermine the efficacy of the attack responses. We thus need approaches to correctly identify the cause of packet losses. In this poster paper, we address this problem by proposing and building a fine-grained analysis (FGA) tool that investigates the causes of packet losses and reports the most likely cause of these losses. Our tool uses parameters, e.g. RSSI and LQI, transmitted with every received packet to profile the links between nodes and their corresponding neighborhood. through real-world experiments, we have validated our approach and shown that our tool is able to differentiate between the various attacks that may affect the nodes and the links.

this paper proposes a mechanism to share and utilize various sensors among multiple Android terminals for a functional enhancement and a battery life extension. the most important contribution is how to emulate the value from remote sensor as a value from a local sensor. By this emulation, all the other applications existed on Google Play Market can utilize remote sensors without any modification. For realizing our proposal, we modified Android OS itself, and developed two applications that run on Android OS. In the former, we uniquely modified sensorManager of Android OS for supporting an external sensors. In the latter, we made a virtualizing application for each embeddedsensors that sends a value to other terminals via Bluetooth. Also, we developed a control application of our function itself. through our demo using "Penguin Skiing 3D", we show that an acceleration sensor is successfully virtualized and is behaving as a local sensor of another terminal. In addition, we evaluate the affect of a sampling interval and a cache update interval at a remote terminal against the accuracy at a local terminal.

We demonstrate interoperable mobile agents for languageand platform-independent wireless sensor network programming, with low-power resource-constrained embedded devices as static nodes and Android-based smartphones as mobile nodes, over disparate networks: 6LoWPAN and Wi-Fi. Representational state transfer architectural principles are applied in agent composition, control and migration and exposing the system resources to the Web: the devices, agents, sensor data, tasks and data processing results. the adaptable agent composition includes the task code in any programming language, the agent migrates according to a resource list and the state, i.e. the intermediate task result, represents the agent as a system resource. Mobile agents are then utilized in two tasks: first to collect light sensor data cooperatively in location, saving the mobile node battery whenever possible, and secondly the magnetometer sensor data withthe scanned Wi-Fi access points'signal strength is used to detect groups of mobile nodes moving in the same direction in real-time.

Traditional low-power wireless protocols maintain distributed network state to cope with link dynamics. Modeling the pro- tocol operation as a function of network state is dificult as the state is frequently updated in an uncoordinated fashion. Recent protocols use synchronous transmissions (ST): mul- tiple nodes send simultaneously towards the same receiver, as opposed to pairwise link-based transmissions (LT). ST en- able eficient multi-hop protocols with little network state. We studied whether ST in Glossy enable simple yet accu- rate protocol modeling [10]. Based on extensive testbed experiments and statistical analyses, we found that: (i) unlike LT, packet receptions and losses with ST largely adhere to a sequence of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Bernoulli trials;(ii) this property greatly simplifies accurately modeling ST-based protocols, as we demonstrated by obtaining model errors below 0.25% in energy for the Glossy based Low-Power Wireless Bus (LWB).

Up-to-date information on urban air pollution, such as reli- able pollution maps, is of great importance for health pro- tection agencies to timely assess the air quality situation and provide advice to the general public. Ultrafine parti- cles (UFPs) are widely spread in urban environments and believed to have severe impact on the human health. How- ever, the lack of spatially resolved data hampers profound evaluation of these efects. In this work, we introduce one of the largest spatially resolved UFP data set available today, with over 25 million measurements to build high-resolution pollution maps for an urban area of 100km2. the data is collected throughout more than one year using mobile sensor nodes, which are installed on top of public transport vehicles in the city of Zurich, Switzerland. We develop land-use re gression models to create pollution maps with a high spatial resolution and study their temporal resolution limit.
