the paper described a design of steering wheel with anti-fatigue driving function. this design utilizes pattern recognition technology;was set transformer angular displacement sensor, GPS module and embedded system in the steering wheel. the transformer angular displacement sensor used to collect corner voltage changes of steering wheel. then the embedded system executes pattern recognition to waveform that consisting by continuously varying voltage, in order to determine the driver fatigue. the system also uses changes of GPS data to determine the state in the vehicle such as stop or action, in order to control the algorithm periods of continuous driving time. Finally, the system provides early warning for fatigue driving combining these two parameters. © 2012 IEEE.

Energy consumption is of critical concern in large office buildings. While office spaces are dynamically used, current building automation systems lack information on space utilisation to adaptively adjust energy spending according to actual needs. In this work, we propose an approach to count people per office space using distributed strategically placed PIR sensor nodes. We present our concept of a self-powered PIR sensor node that is using a MSP430 family processor. the sensor node can be flexibly installed in building spaces providing specific advances over existing devices. We detail the design considerations, implementation, and evaluation of this novel embedded system. Our evaluations showed that the sensor node can emit triggers at 276 nAh, thus operating for 361 triggers in complete darkness on a single charge. the approach can be used for lighting, climate, and appliances control in office spaces.

One of the most demanding challenges in the field of audio engineering is the transmission of low-latency high quality audio streams over networks. While several protocols nowadays allow wired local network streaming, much effort is still required to achieve similar goals over existing wireless LAN technologies. While the challenge is still far from being solved, several design issues can be highlighted and future scenarios can be outlined. this paper proposes the setup of a wireless music production system based on open hardware and open software which requires relatively low setup effort while allowing for a high flexibility of use. the hardware platform is the Beagleboard, based on Texas Instruments DM3730, running a GNU/Linux OS and the computer music language Pure Data. Such a device can capture electric instrument audio, generate sound, send MIDI or OSC control data, and stream to PCs and other embedded devices operating as mixers, effect racks and so on, enabling an ecosystem of flexible and open devices. Tests conducted on a home wireless network show acceptable latency for many applications.

Dynamic Power Management (DPM) refers to a set of strategies that achieves efficient power consumption by selectively turning off (or reducing the performance of) a system components when they are idle or are serving light workloads. this paper presents a Reinforcement Learning (RL) based DPM technique for a portable, multi-camera traffic monitoring system. We target the computing hardware of the sensing platform which is the major contributor to the entire power consumption. the RL technique used for the DPM of the sensing platform uses a model-free learning algorithm that does not require a priori model of the system. In addition, a robust workload estimator based on an online, Multi-Layer Artificial Neural Network (ML-ANN) is incorporated to the learning algorithm to provide partial information about the workload and to take better decisions according to the changing workload. Based on the estimated workload and a selected power-latency tradeoff parameter, the algorithm learns to use optimal time-out values in sleep and idle modes of the computing hardware. Our results show that the learning algorithm learns an optimal DPM policy for the non-stationary workload, while significantly reducing the power consumption and keeping the system response to a desired level.

the current means for aquaculture water quality monitoring have a weak infrastructure. We research to use wireless sensor technology, embedded computing technology, MEMS technology, distributing information processing technology and wireless communication technology to build the wireless network sensor network system. this system is a digital, networked, intelligent real-time dynamic for monitoring the aquaculture water quality. the system not only can deal the normal detection of the aquaculture environment indicators (temperature, PH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, ammonia, etc.) in real-time monitoring, but also can detect indicators of data fusion and data mining to establish a history database of aquaculture environmental monitoring indicators. the system can gather the monitoring data by a local or remote way, and realize the real-time, dynamic display and analysis. So as to improve the process of aquaculture, water resources utilization, the quality of the culture environment and reduce emissions of pollutants. the system can provide an important technical means and scientific basis. the hardware architecture design is the core technology of this system. We will detail the part in this article.

Integration of trust in routing mechanisms already prevalent in Wireless sensor Networks (WSN) has become an interesting research area of late. Several methods exist for the assignment of trust to the nodes present in a WSN. However the real challenge lies in proper integration of this trust to an existing routing protocol for the synthesis of a trust-aware routing algorithm. In this paper we try to take the help of Geometrical Mean based indirect trust evaluation mechanism for calculation of trust of individual nodes and thereby use the calculated trusts for determination of the different route trusts (RTs). We present a link state routing protocol based only on these indirect trusts which forms the routes and finds the best trustworthy route among them by comparing the values of all the calculated route trusts as for each route present in the network. We have developed three algorithms related to this and have shown their merits. Finally, we compare our work with similar trust integrated routing protocols and show its advantages over them. © 2012 IEEE.

Over the recent years, novel low-power microcontrollers have been introduced. this has allowed the development of various applications, which can operate over long periods of time and fulfill their tasks having very limited amount of energy, such as e.g., Wireless sensor Networks (WSN).Nonetheless, for fulfilling their tasks such devices in addition to the central processor often have to include several microcontrollers or some peripherals, such as sensors, external memory chips or other application-specific hardware. All those peripherals, except the energy for actual operation also require some energy for communicating to the central processor. In the paper we are investigating and comparing the energy consumption for three most widely used embedded systems' digital serial interfaces, namely I2C, SPI and UART. the presented results have been obtained using the real-life microcontroller (PIC18F family from Microchip) and reveal the energy consumption for different interface implementation methods (hardware vs. software) and various scenarios (idle interface, different data transmit or receive scenarios). the presented data can be valuable as well for researchers and engineers and allow to choose the most energy efficient communication interface and its implementation method to be used in the most energy-critical applications. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper we discuss a theoretical approach to do early assessment of the area and power consumption of hardware accelerators for elliptic curve cryptography. For evaluation we developed several different one clock multipliers as building block for the final serial multipliers. the former are evaluated concerning their efficiency in comparison to literature and the results of our assessment technique are compared with synthesis results. Since the application areas we are interested in are embedded systems, pervasive computing or wireless sensor networks we investigated serial multipliers in order to achieve reduced area and energy consumption compared to the single clock multipliers. Our evaluation clearly shows that our approach provides good hints to select well suited implementation candidates.
