Effect of psychosocial stress on health has been a central focus area of public health research. this demonstration features a wireless sensor suite called AutoSense that collects and processes cardiovascular, respiratory, and thermoregularity measurements that can inform about the general stress state of test subjects in their natural environment. the AutoSense suite is complemented with a software framework called FieldStream on a smart phone that processes sensor measurements received from AutoSense to infer stress and other rich human behaviors (e.g., activity). In the demonstration we will have subjects wearing AutoSense suite and ANT enabled mobile phones providing real time data analysis to compute various stress indices and contextual information based on activity and respiration analysis. © 2011 Authors.

IEEE 802.15.4 links can be classified into three distinct reception regions: connected, transitional, and disconnected. the transitional region is large in size and characterized by the existence of links with intermediate reception ratios. Our work leverages previous work on understanding the properties of wireless links in the space and time domains but differs in the sense that we seek opportunities to actively adjust the physical topologies of sensor networks to improve link quality. Based on an existing theoretical model supported by extensive experiments in a variety of environments, we propose an efficient mechanism to identify locations with high reception ratios in the transitional region. the proposed mechanism can be used to effectively construct long, yet high reception ratio links that are 100% longer than the size of the connected region, thereby reducing the number of relay nodes necessary to interconnect sparse sensor networks by 34%. Furthermore, this mechanism can help better position mobile sinks and guide the communication protocols for mobile sensor networks. Overall, this paper provides fresh insights into the implications of the log-normal path loss model on deploying and moving sensor motes. © 2011 acm.

In this demonstration, we implement and deploy a solar-powered wireless sensor network in an outdoor carpark to provide parking guidance to motorists. Combining energy harvesting, multi-hop opportunistic routing and adaptive duty-cycling technologies, the system provides low-cost, real-time, sustainable and eco-friendly operation. We make use of solar energy harvesting sources to power our wireless vehicle detection sensor nodes. Upon detecting the presence of a car, this information is transmitted via a multi-hop wireless network to a base station, before being forwarded to the central server for information dissemination to motorists. We will display, in real-time, the variance in the duty cycle and energy level according to the time of day throughout the conference period. For similar demos we typically provide both a live video stream and real-time sensor data from the carpark, displayed on desktop web browsers and mobile devices, so that visitors can see parking lot occupancy data in real-time and compare it with a live video feed, but due to the time difference between Singapore and Seattle, we will be showing a video recording instead. © 2011 Authors.

Acoustic shooter localization systems are being rapidly deployed in the field. However, these are standalone systems - either wearable or vehicle-mounted - that do not have networking capability even though the advantages of widely distributed sensing for locating shooters have been demonstrated before. the reason for this is that certain disadvantages of wireless network-based prototypes made them impractical for the military. the system that utilized stationary single-channel sensors required many sensor nodes, while the multi-channel wearable version needed to track the absolute self-orientation of the nodes continuously, a notoriously hard task. this paper presents an approach that overcomes the shortcomings of past approaches. Specifically, the technique requires as few as five single-channel wireless sensors to provide accurate shooter localization and projectile trajectory estimation. Caliber estimation and weapon classification are also supported. In addition, a single node alone can provide reliable miss distance and range estimates based on a single shot as long as a reasonable assumption holds. the main contribution of the work and the focus of this paper is the novel sensor fusion technique that works well with a limited number of observations. the technique is thoroughly evaluated using an extensive shot library. © 2011 acm.

Wireless multi-hop networks meet the requirements of disaster area scenarios by their definition. Recently, different mesh and Wireless sensor Network (WSN) testbeds were deployed. However, these deployments do not meet the specific characteristics of disaster area scenarios. Developing algorithms and protocols for public safety scenarios and deploying public safety networks is a huge challenge. We have developed BonnSens a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)-based prototype of a mesh-based command and control sensing system for public safety scenarios. In this poster, we present experiences as well as first measurement results from an on-site deployment in a disaster area maneuver. Overall, our goal is to see which approaches are applicable for public safety networks and where further specific challenges are. © 2011 Authors.

Gesture is a promising mobile User Interface modality that enables eyes-free interaction without stopping or impeding movement. In this paper, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of E-Gesture, an energy-efficient gesture recognition system using a hand-worn sensor device and a smartphone. E-gesture employs a novel gesture recognition architecture carefully crafted by studying sporadic occurrence patterns of gestures in continuous sensor data streams and analyzing the energy consumption characteristics of both sensors and smartphones. We developed a closed-loop collaborative segmentation architecture, that can (1) be implemented in resource-scarce sensor devices, (2) adaptively turn off power-hungry motion sensors without compromising recognition accuracy, and (3) reduce false segmentations generated from dynamic changes of body movement. We also developed a mobile gesture classification architecture for smartphones that enables HMM-based classification models to better fit multiple mobility situations. © 2011 acm.

sensor and Actuator Networks (SAN) are distributed systems deployed to sense, monitor and act on the environment. they may include any of the following: sensors, wiring, embedded system components, wireless communication and backbone servers. Given current technological advances, costs and flexibility advantages of wireless sensor networks technology, wireless SAN (WSAN) deployments are being considered in such environments. WSAN nodes are small embedded devices that provide sensing, acting and (limited) in-network processing capabilities. A significant research challenge is how to provide an interface that allows configuration and operation of any computation-capable node or group of nodes in an industrial setting, as opposed to hand-coding every component of the system for every minor or major configuration change and/or having multiple configuration systems. In this paper we propose a configuration approach over industrial WSAN networks. Our approach was successfully tested in an industrial refinery setting, allowing deployers to configure and re-configure the system to meet specific needs. © 2011 acm.

this paper describes the integration of distributed image analysis in a smart camera network with a control application. the distributed smart cameras analyze the environment of the controlled object and transfer accurate position and orientation information of all detected obstacles to the controller within guaranteed time bounds. With this information the controller can optimize the trajectory of the load. We present two different approaches for estimating the bounding boxes for detected obstacles and compare their benefits and drawbacks.

this paper reflects on experiences in deploying middleware for a body sensor network, using commercial biosensors. three types of issues are highlighted that arose during the deployment, which impact middleware design in particular: 1) How can the architecture cope with different levels of data fidelity and propagate those levels to the applications? 2) What is the optimal way to handle temporary disconnections from sensors? and 3) How should the middleware implement sensor-specific peculiarities? Although these issues are described using a specific and demanding health care scenario, we argue that the underlying causes tend to be archetypal for a generic set of sensor network middleware. Awareness of these problem categories and possible solutions are therefore generally relevant for other researchers working on middleware designs for all kinds of sensor networks. © 2011 acm.

Interoperability is essential for the commercial adoption of wireless sensor networks. However, existing sensor network architectures have been developed in isolation and thus interoperability has not been a concern. Recently, IP has been proposed as a solution to the interoperability problem of low-power and lossy networks (LLNs), considering its open and standards-based architecture at the network, transport, and application layers. We present two complete and interoperable implementations of the IPv6 protocol stack for LLNs, one for Contiki and one for TinyOS, and show that the cost of interoperability is low: their performance and overhead is on par with state-of-the-art protocol stacks custom built for the two platforms. At the same time, extensive testbed results show that the ensemble performance of a mixed network with nodes running the two interoperable stacks depends heavily on implementation decisions and parameters set at multiple protocol layers. In turn, these results argue that the current industry practice of interoperability testing does not cover the crucial topic of the performance and motivate the need for generic techniques that quantify the performance of such networks and configure their run-time behavior. © 2011 acm.
