this paper presents a novel Radio Interferometric Positioning System (RIPS), which we call Stochastic RIPS (SRIPS). Although RIPS provides centimeter accuracy, it is still not widely adopted due to (1) the limited set of suitable radio platforms and (2) the relatively long measurement and calibration times. SRIPS overcomes these practical limitations by (1) omitting the calibration phase of the existing RIPS and by (2) applying a novel positioning algorithm. SRIPS exploits the phenomenon of the small but stable difference between two transmitted frequencies that often exists when two radios are tuned to the same frequency. We obtain an experimental measure for this stability. this approach enables the implementation of RIPS on commonly available radio platforms, such as the CC2430, because fine-tuning in small steps relative to the beat frequencies for calibration is not required. In addition, we show that SRIPS calculates the position that provides the best fit to the set of measurements, given the underlying statistical and propagation models. therefore, SRIPS converges more accurately to the true locations in a variety of situations of practical interest. Experiments in a 20x20m2 set-up verify this and show that our SRIPS CC2430 implementation reduces the number of required measurements by a factor of three, and it reduces the measurement time to less than 0.1 seconds, while providing accuracy similar to that of the existing RIPS implementation on the CC1000 platform, which requires seconds. © 2011 acm.

sensornets promise to extend automated monitoring and control into industrial processes. In spite of great progress made in sensornet design, installation and operational costs can impede their widespread adoption - current practices of infrequent, manual observation are often seen as sufficient and more cost effective than automation, even for key business processes. In this paper we present two new approaches to reduce these costs, and we apply those approaches to rapidly detect blockages in steam pipelines of a production oilfield. First, we eliminate the high cost of bringing power to the field by generating electricity from heat, exploiting the high temperature of the very pipelines we monitor. We demonstrate that for temperature differences of 80°C or more, we are able to sustain sensornet operation without grid electricity or batteries. Second, we show that non-invasive sensing can reduce the cost of sensing by avoiding sensors that pierce the pipeline and have high installation cost with interruption to production. Our system instead uses surface temperature to infer full or partial blockages in steam pipelines and full blockages in hot water pipelines. Finally, we evaluate our "steam-powered sensing" system to monitor potential blockages in steam pipeline chokes at a production oilfield. We also show the generality of our algorithm by applying it to detect water pipeline blockages in our lab. To our knowledge, this paper describes the first field-tested deployment of an industrial sensornet that employs non-solar energy harvesting. © 2011 acm.

Body area sensor networks have been attracting more and more applications which focus on human behavior and monitoring, ranging from simple positioning to medical applications. these BSNs inherit unique specifications since are composed of light-weight embedded systems. In this paper, we focus on energy and lifetime requirements of these systems which is one of the most challenging design constraints. We study this problem from the angle of data compression which is known to be very efficient in energy reduction specially when large amount of data is to be transmitted wirelessly. We introduce the notion of functional compression which utilizes classes of data patterns to efficiently represent information through regenerative functions. Furthermore, we propose a reconfigurable compression methods which dynamically uses different compression methods to optimize compression ratio and energy savings. © 2010 acm.

Efficient deployment and management have been identified to be key challenges for the acceptance of solutions based on Cooperating Objects (COs). the operations for CO deployment and management can be classified into five phases in each of which several challenges and issues are emphasized. this paper presents the PLANET project whose goal is to tackle these challenges and to provide support for issues regarding large-scale CO deployment and operations. Moreover, two application scenarios, Wildlife Monitoring and Automated Airfield, are considered to demonstrate the capability of the PLANET solution.

In this paper we propose an approach based on self-interested autonomous cameras, which exchange responsibility for tracking objects in a market mechanism, in order to maximise their own utility. A novel ant-colony inspired mechanism is used to grow the vision graph during runtime, which may then be used to optimise communication between cameras. the key benefits of our completely decentralised approach are on the one hand generating the vision graph online which permits the addition and removal cameras to the network during runtime and on the other hand relying only on local information, increasing the robustness of the system. Since our market-based approach does not rely on a priori topology information, the need for any multi-camera calibration can be avoided.

embedded systems have limited processing power, memory and energy. When camera sensors are added to an embedded system, the problem of limited resources becomes even more pronounced. In this paper, we introduce two methodologies to increase the energy-efficiency and battery-life of an embedded smart camera by hardware-level operations when performing object detection and tracking. the CITRIC platform is employed as our embedded smart camera. First, down-sampling is performed at hardware level on the micro-controller of the image sensor rather than performing software-level down-sampling at the main microprocessor of the camera board. In addition, instead of performing object detection and tracking on whole image, we first estimate the location of the target in the next frame, form a search region around it, then crop the next frame by using the HREF and VSYNC signals at the micro-controller of the image sensor, and perform detection and tracking only in the cropped search region. thus, the amount of data that is moved from the image sensor to the main memory at each frame is optimized. Also, we can adaptively change the size of the cropped window during tracking depending on the object size. Reducing the amount of transferred data, better use of the memory resources, and delegating image down-sampling and cropping tasks to the micro-controller on the image sensor, result in significant decrease in energy consumption and increase in battery-life. Experimental results show that hardware-level down-sampling and cropping, and performing detection and tracking in cropped regions provide 41.24% decrease in energy consumption, and 107.2% increase in battery-life. Compared to performing software-level down-sampling and processing whole frames, proposed methodology provides an additional 8 hours of continuous processing on 4 AA batteries, increasing the lifetime of the camera to 15.5 hours.

While there has been considerable work on self-adaptive systems, applying these techniques to networked, embedded systems poses several new problems due to the requirements of embedded real-time systems. Among others, we have to consider memory and hardware limitations, as well as task schedulability and timing dependencies. the goal of this paper is to find a correct placement of software components efficiently, even though most of these individual constraints are highly intractable (NP-complete). this is a prerequisite for runtime adaptation in such domains and can be used for system optimization, extension or failure handling. We introduce an integrated model of system constraints for efficient computation of software component allocation, focusing on automotive embedded systems. For solving these, we have developed and compared two techniques based on SAT solving and Simulated Annealing, which enforce placement constraints efficiently. this reduces the size of the constraints significantly, but still leads to 2 million variables and more than 126 thousand equations in our case study with realistic automotive system settings. We show that both approaches provide solutions in several seconds on current commodity hardware, and show that SAT solving is more efficient for larger sets of equations. © 2011 IEEE.

Cooperating Objects are, in the most general case, small computing devices equipped with wireless communication capabilities that are able to cooperate and organize themselves autonomously into networks of sensors, actuators and processing units to achieve a common task. Several areas could greatly benefit with the introduction of Cooperating Object technologies, ranging from automation (home, industrial, building) to healthcare and energy management. To exploit this potential the research community has to tackle various problems in various areas including hardware, algorithms and systems. In this paper we describe these research areas and their different challenges. Based on a survey, predominant work areas are selected that should receive the most attention.
